Essay Outline
I.

Introduction Paragraph:
a. The theory of quantum entanglement states that entities can exist in parallel states
of interconnectedness despite perceived gaps in space and time. These
entanglements can be built from symbolism, conflict, philosophy, or any other
number of elements that can be supported by evidence.

II.

Thesis Statement (in paper it will be the last sentence of your introduction):
a. Through the analyzation of many literary ideas, this essay will argue the
connection between Elie Wiesel from the novel Night and Harry Potter from the
popular book series of the same name.

III.

1st Major Point /1st paragraph

a. Topic Sentence (statement): When considering the relation between Elie and
Harry, it is clear that they share a common conflict. Both Elie and Harry live
harsh lives and the presence of their families is absent.
b. Quote (proof) & Source/Page #: Harry was looking at his family, for the first
time in his life. The Potters smiled and waved at Harry and he stared hungrily
back at them, his hands pressed flat against the glass as though he was hoping to
fall right through it and reach them. He had a powerful kind of ache inside him,
half joy, half terrible sadness. (Rowling 127-128)
c. "Here, every man has to fight for himself and not think of anyone else. Even of
his father. Here, there are no fathers, no brothers, no friends. Everyone lives and
dies for himself alone." (Wiesel 105)

d. Reasons why this quote backs up your argument (support/explanation): These

excerpts show the reader that both characters have experienced great loss and
hardship.
IV.

2nd Major Point /2nd paragraph

a. Topic Sentence (statement): Another similarity found among the two characters is
their philosophy. Elie and Harry are determined to maintain strength and courage
despite the fact that their lives are filled with immense difficulty.
b. Quote (proof) & Source/Page #
A.

"We must try not to sink beneath our anguish, Harry, but battle on"
(Rowling)

B.

There's a long road of suffering ahead of you. But don't lose

courage. You've already escaped the gravest danger: selection. So
now, muster your strength, and don't lose heart. We shall all see the
day of liberation. Have faith in life. Above all else, have faith. Drive
out despair, and you will keep death away from yourselves. Hell is
not for eternity. And now, a prayer - or rather, a piece of advice: let
there be comradeship among you. We are all brothers, and we are all
suffering the same fate. The same smoke floats over all our heads.
Help one another. It is the only way to survive. (Wiesel)

c. Reasons why this quote backs up your argument (support/explanation): These

pieces of literary evidence show that Elie and Harry were irrevocably strong no
matter the situation. They each experienced horrible things that no human being

should ever have to experience and because of these events they learned to be
resilient and brave.
V.

3rd Major Point/3rd paragraph

a. Topic Sentence (statement): Lastly, the idea of symbolism is tied to Elie Wiesel
and Harry Potter. They both represent survival, as Elie survived the Holocaust and
Harry survived the wrath of Voldemort.
b. Quote (proof) & Source/Page #:
A.

"We were masters of nature, masters of the world. We had forgotten

everything death, fatigue, our natural needs. Stronger than cold or
hunger, stronger than the shots and the desire to die, condemned and
wandering, mere numbers, we were the only men on earth." (Wiesel
83)

B.

The Killing Curse. Only one wizard is known to have survived it.
And he's sitting in this room. (Rowling)

c. Reasons why this quote backs up your argument (support/explanation): Elie and
Harry are considered to be anomalies in their respective societies.
