The Mauryan Empire originated under Ashoka's rule from 269 to 232 BCE. It grew too vast, encompassing far reaches of the Indian subcontinent and external territories, which proved a weakness due to lack of communication over long distances. While the centralized Mauryan administration effectively controlled its extensive domains, regional governments began asserting autonomy when imperial authority waned after Ashoka's death. The Mauryan Dynasty experienced a final blow from a revolt led by General Pushyamitra within the military, leading to the dramatic fall of the vast but weakly governed empire.

The Mauryan Dynasty fell because it was too vast in its extent. It reached the farthest corners of the Indian- sub continent it also included territories outside the natural frontiers of India. This vastness itself was a source of weakness rather than of strength because the lack of communication. Also, through the Mauryan administration from the days of Candrugupta was strong enough to control the the distance empires bound to a system in the center, it was also necessary for the governments to enjoy power. When the center declined and its authority became weak, they assumed their own power. When the Mauryan rule was weakening and the empire was breaking apart during the middle after Asokas death there came a final blow. There was a big revolt inside the empire from the chief of the Mauryan army, General Pushyamitra . This lead the Mauryan Dynasty to fall dramatically.
