Historical Timeline
1620 Emphasis on basic skills.
1636 Latin grammar was established in college-prep schools.
1647 Massachusetts Law established mandating that reading, writing, and Latin teachers for
towns depending on size.
1700 Public schools required to teach reading, writing, and basic math.
1750 Secondary schools establish teaching in drawing, surveying, navigation, and accounting.
1770 African American School was founded in Philadelphia
1821 The first public high school establish teaching basic skills, history, geography, health and
physical training.
1824 Renaming English High School marked the beginning for state-supported common
schools.
1860 First English speaking Kindergarten teaches on growth, activity, play, songs, and
stories.
1874 Free public schooling includes high schools.
1893 College-bound high schools to emphasize mental discipline in humanities, language, and
science.
1918 The focus shifts to individual differences, curriculum emphasis the Seven Cardinal
Principles.
1930 Education movement focuses on students needs and interests.

1941 Lanham Act provided funding for training of workers in war plants by U. S.
Office of Education.
1957 Soviet Sputnik sparks emphasis on science, math, and language.
1958 National Defense Education Act established.
1960 Expansion of course offerings and electives.
1965 Back-to-basics movement emphasis on reading, writing, mathematics, and oral
communication skills. Elementary and Secondary Education Act allocation of funds to
the poor children in the district.
1968 Act was amended to the Title VII, the Bilingual Education Act.
1975 Title LX of the Ed. Amendments Act that no person in the U.S. shall be denied benefits
under any education program. The Education for All Handicapped Children Act passed
by Congress.

1990 Six education goals established by Bush.
1994 Clinton signs into law Goals 2000, Educated America Act.
1995 Clinton creates the National Information Infrastructure.
1996 Clinton launches the Presidents Education Technology Initiative.
1999 Clinton signs into law the Education Excellence for All Children Act.
2002 Bush signs into law the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001
2014 Obama proposes changes to No Child Left Behind Act.
