Homework Assignments:

We will start our lesson with a general question to the

class, "What makes a Cinderella story?" As a class we will
generate ideas and brainstorm details and components
necessary for the story of Cinderella.
After brainstorming answers, we will make a word cloud
using Tagul that show all the things that make a Cinderella
story [NEPF 1, Learning Purpose and Engagement]
Review vocabulary words which align with Cinderella
lesson plan.
Vocabulary words could include: village, invisible, theme,
tale, clever, considerate, miserable, proud, ashamed,
orphan, garment, festival, realm, maiden, cinders, ect...
Lesson objective is to compare and contrast different
Cinderella stories from different cultures.
Students will investigate common elements of the
Cinderella story and also examine why different versions
include various cultural references and how these cultural
differences affect the story.
As a class we will discuss the European Cinderella story by
Charles Perrault. Students will map main story details and
events using a concept map like Webspiration. [NEPF 2,
Learning Tasks and Cognitive Demands]
By concept mapping the story students will be engaged in
deeper learning and encouraged to note specific details
and main events.
After developing independent concept maps of the
European Cinderella version we discuss as a class, class
will split into groups of 3/4 and each group will discuss a
culturally different Cinderella story (Yeh-Shen, The RoughFace Girl, Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters). Each group will
create a concept map for the story and find 3 similarities
and 3 differences in the story to the European Cinderella.
Each group will decide together and post 3 cultural
differences and why they are important to the story on a
collaborative Padlet page [NEPF 3, Engagement]
Students will then begin working on individual story boards
to tell their own unique Cinderella story using the story
board template with 8 scenes.
Complete individual Cinderella story boards.
Study vocabulary/spelling words for the week that tie into
the Cinderella lesson.

Closure:

Long-Term Memory Review:

Students will all share their Cinderella story boards.

As a class we will revisit the question "What makes a
Cinderella story?"
We will now make a new word cloud using Tagul and
compare it to the first one from the beginning of the
lesson, have our ideas changed?
After this lesson students should understand the idea that
culture and background can effect the details of the story
but the overall theme is universal.
Throughout the year we will use the concept mapping skills
on different books and stories. We will also ask why certain
details are included and if they relate to the cultural
setting or maybe to the author.
Students will look for the theme or message behind stories
or books.
Students now have the tools to compare and contrast
which will be revisited throughout the year.
