Summary
Who are todays students?
THE STUDENTS: A CHANGING LANDSCAPE
Schools are becoming more and more diverse as the diversity of the
United States increases and English is not their first language. Several
schools are bilingual or even trilingual. The main languages taught are
English and Spanish. Along with the different languages bring religious
diversity. Another diversity that has increased is sexual orientation.
There are a lot of programs that allow students to feel accepted. Lastly
the increase in socioeconomic disparities has increased. This correlates
with the increase of immigrants.
STUDENTS WHO ARE AT RISK
At risk students are students in danger of not completing school or not
acquiring the education they need to be successful citizens. Since 1980
the percent of dropouts has decreased by more than 50%.
STUDENT DIVERSITY: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

Classrooms are becoming more diverse. With that, teachers are having
to expand their knowledge and understanding of different cultures. A
project called SEED or Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity has
been around for about 25 years. The curriculum promotes multicultural
diversity, gender equality, and global awareness.
MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE SMART?
Howard Gardners Multiple Intelligence Theory is a theory about how all
students learn in their own way. This goes beyond the old school way
of teaching where everyone is taught the same way regardless of their
learning style.
LEARNING STYLES
There are 3 main types of learners: auditory learners, visual learners,
and kinesthetic learners.
TEACHING THE BROAD RANGE OF DIVERSE STUDENTS
As a teacher you need to be constantly learning. With the change in
demographics, it is important to be informed and to get your information
from respectable resources.
