Brief description of the

lesson
This lesson is:

Rationale

Timeframe

Preschool (4-5 years old)

Classroom Number

Developmental domains: Fine motor skills, listening, multi-step directions

Students will be able to learn about their varying facial features and their body
parts. They will be able to draw the appropriate facial features using the right
shapes and colors.
A new concept
A continuation of the
All About Me theme
This lesson is an excellent way to expand on the childrens knowledge about
themselves. They will learn about their facial features, including the color of their
skin, eyes, and hair and the shape of the mouth, nose, eyes, eyebrows and ears.
This will also help strengthen the childrens understanding that we are all
different but unique in our own ways.
The timeframe of this lesson is 15-20 minutes (at most). It will take about 5
minutes to read the story. After reading the story, the teacher will then have the
children discuss the varying shapes for their facial features and body parts. The
teacher will draw a person (with the verbal help from the students). This will take
about 5 minutes. Then, the students will go to the tables and complete the art
project, which will take about 5-7 minutes.

Anticipatory Set:
In order to introduce the children to this learning activity, I will start off by
seating the children for circle time and asking about our different facial features
and body parts. I will then read the story, Incredible Me, and ask questions
throughout the story.
Instruction/Mini Lesson
After reading the story, I will take out the easel white board and ask the children
to help me draw a self-portrait. I will include varying colors and shapes. I will
make note of examples that children may tend to do, such as one eye, blue hair
or no neck.
I will then demonstrate the art project to the students. Every student will receive
a small, table mirror. They will be able to look into the mirror and see themselves
as they create their self-portrait. Every student will receive one small paper
plate, construction paper pieces (pre-cut into shapes), crayons, glue and
scissors. The first step of the art project is to use the shapes and crayons to
create their facial features. Then, the students will glue the small paper plate

onto a piece of white construction paper and use the crayons to create the rest
of their body parts.
Independent Practice:
The children will work independently at the table completing their self-portrait art
project.
Closure:
After the lesson is complete, visually display the students self-portraits on the
classroom wall. It is also a good idea to print out a picture of the childrens faces
and put them side-by-side with the self-portrait.
