Inductive Teaching Lesson 2 Can I get a job done?

Background and Logic

As we go through each day, is it important to be able to get the variety of jobs we

face done? This is exactly the question that participants need to be asked. As most
jobs involve working with other human beings are there any skills needed to be able
to deal with other human beings? The students will be asked to work in pairs to
think about the skills needed. To launch their thinking, they would be asked to think
about persons they like and also persons they like to avoid. Their ideas would be
recorded on cards, one idea per card. Then volunteers would be asked to group
similar cards and decide on representative title cards.
The clustered idea cards, created by the students working in pairs, would present a
model for skills development, i.e., something like:
Communication Learning Skills Persistence Feedback Interpersonal Skills
The students would then answer the questions:
What does Allah (SWT) direct about interpersonal skills?
How would a person with good interpersonal skills get a job done?
Class would be divided into 4 groups, discuss skill required to get a job done and
collectively prepare a mind map of skills needed to get a job done.
The students will then compare their own mind map drawn up in groups with that
given in the lesson. They will comment on differences and similarities. And answer
questions from the teacher like,
Why is feedback necessary for success?
Individually, the students will attempt a similar mind map for themselves, upload &
explain their mind map in a forum or social media as well as comment on other
mind maps and respond to comments on their own mind maps.

Expected Skills by the end of Lesson

1. A realization that interpersonal skills are necessary to get jobs done
successfully
2. Have a group-developed model for interpersonal skills
3. Be able to create a personal mind map while thinking about whether they
have the necessary skills to tackle jobs successfully.
4. Deepen their understanding of skills by commenting on other mind maps and
responding to comments on their own.

Description of Powerpoint and Method of Delivery

The powerpoint, that can be downloaded and used as a guide in class consists of a
series of questions and activities that follow a modified inductive teaching
methodology. The teacher should invite a response to each question, which are laid
out in a sequential logical manner. Once at least two students have proposed an
answer, the teacher can support or offer additional questions that would lead to
better and more specific answers. The answers are not meant to be immediately
conclusive. These are to engage the students and guide them towards maturing

their thoughts on the subject of interpersonal skills. So no answer by a student is

wrong. In fact, as the title cards of each cluster are put up, the teacher could ask
whether any idea is wrong? It will be noticed that every idea has a place. It is just
that each person thinks from a different angle or has an individual concern. One of
the main questions the teacher should ask to engage the students is:
How would this skill be useful to get a particular job done, or
In what kind of job would a particular skill help?
The job of the teacher is to engage the student in each question, by getting to ask
relevant questions, offering alternatives and posing questions again. The total
lesson is designed to last between 2.5 to 3 hours. The students should be given
adequate time for the tasks. If the lesson is to be covered in two classes, then break
at a convenient point, like having discussed the title cards and summarized the
learning about what the cards are saying. The next session can begin with reviewing
the Model Person, where the teacher can also use a mind map to summarize what
skills were discussed in last class.

Assignment Lesson 2
After class, the student should attempt to draw a personal mind map with
Interpersonal Skills required to get jobs done successfully. The assignment activity
contributes to 40% of the final mark. This is shown in the Rubric given at the
beginning.
