UNIVERSITY

A university ( Latin : universitas , "a whole") is an institution of higher


education and research which grants academic degrees in a variety of subjects

and provides both undergraduate education and postgraduate education . The


word "university" is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et
scholarium , which roughly means "community of teachers and scholars ."

The most common types of universities and colleges are: community


colleges (eg Baton Rouge Community College ), state universities (eg
Chicago State University ), liberal arts colleges (eg Wellesley College ),
professional schools (eg Research College of Nursing ), military
academies (eg United States Military Academy at West Point ), and
proprietary institutions (eg American School of Business ). Other types
include: technical colleges (eg Ivy Tech State College: Columbus ),
agricultural colleges (eg Northeastern Oklahoma Agricultural and
Mechanical College ), teachers' colleges (eg Ball State University ), and
colleges affiliated with religions (eg Yeshiva University ). In general,
there are two universities both public and private.
