 The University of Cambridge is one of


the oldest universities in the world, and
one of the largest in the United Kingdom.
It has a world-wide reputation for
outstanding academic achievement and
the high quality of research.

Its History

The university grew out of an association of scholars


in the city of Cambridge that was formed, early
records suggest, in 1209 by scholars leaving Oxford
after a dispute with townsfolk. The two "ancient
universities" have many common features and are
often jointly referred to as Oxbridge. In addition to
cultural and practical associations as a historic part of
British society, the two universities have a long
history of rivalry with each other

 From the time of Newton in the later 17th century


until the mid-19th century, the university maintained
a strong emphasis on applied mathematics,
particularly mathematical physics.
 Study of this subject was compulsory for graduation,
and students were required to take an exam for the
