• The University of Oxford is a highly selective institution, with an acceptance rate of approximately
17%. However, the acceptance rate for international students applying to the school is lower: around
9% only. Still, nearly half of the students attending Oxford University are from outside the UK.

• Oxford was ranked first in the world in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University
Rankings for 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. There are over 24,000 students at Oxford, including
11,955 undergraduates and 12,010 postgraduates. Oxford is very competitive: more than 23,000
people have applied in each of the last three admissions cycles, and there are usually only around
3,300 places. The majority of Oxford’s UK undergraduates come from state schools. For 2020 entry,
over 69% of UK offers.

• Located in the county of Oxfordshire, in England, There is evidence of teaching as early as 1096, is
the oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world's second-oldest university in
continuous operation.
• The schools are totally independent entities, owners of their buildings, with their own staff and their
own budget.

• There are 38 Oxford University colleges and six halls, each with its own internal structure and
activities. All students and most faculty must be members of both the University and a college or
hall. Those who preside over Oxford colleges are known by various titles (depending on the college),
including warden, provost, principal, president, rector, master, or dean.
• The university maintains the largest university library system in the UK and with over 11 million
volumes housed on 120 miles (190 km) of shelving, the Bodleian group is the second-largest library
in the UK, after the British Library. The Bodleian is a legal deposit library, which means that it is
entitled to request a free copy of every book published in the UK. As such, its collection is growing
at a rate of over three miles (five kilometres) of shelving every year.
• Oxford maintains a number of museums and galleries, open for free to the public. The Ashmolean
Museum, founded in 1683, is the oldest museum in the UK, and the oldest university museum in the
world. It holds significant collections of art and archaeology, including works by Michelangelo,
Leonardo da Vinci, Turner, and Picasso, as well as treasures such as the Scorpion Macehead, the
Parian Marble and the Alfred Jewel. It also contains "The Messiah", a pristine Stradivarius violin,
regarded by some as one of the finest examples in existence.
• Christ Church is one of the most spectacular faculties of the University of Oxford and one of the
main tourist attractions in the city. Tom Tower stands tall on the main façade and houses Oxford's
most powerful campaign called Great Tom, every night at 9:05 p.m. the bell is tolled 101 times.
Many classes start at one hour and five, instead of one o'clock.
