Remove 6 liters of oil from a large oil container using only two mugs of 9 liter and 4

liter respectively.

i) Fill the 9 liter mug and pour oil from it into the 4 liter mug to fill it. Now, oil left in the 9 liter
mug is 9-4=5liter.
ii) Empty the 4 liter mug and again pour oil from the 9 liter mug to fill the 4 liter mug. Now oil
left in the 9 liter mug is 1 liter.
iii) Empty the 4 liter mug again and pour the remaining 1 liter of oil from the 9 liter mug to it.
Now, the 4 liter mug contains 1 liter of oil and the 9 liter mug is empty.
iv) Fill the 9 liter mug again and fill the 4 liter mug using it.
Space left in the 4 liter mug is 3 liter hence the 9 liter mug now contains 6 liter of oil.
One day a robber got into a bank to rob its vault. However, he noticed that the vault had an
unusual lock. So he hid behind a desk and watched how others got in. He noticed that the
manager came up to the vault door and pressed a button. The lock read out a number in response
to which the manager said a number of his own. On doing so the door opened. This happened
twice. The first time the lock said 12 and the manager responded with 6. The second time the
lock said 6 and the manager responded with 3. Believing that now he knew all that he needed to
know, the robber approached the door. The door said 10 and in reply the robber entered 5. It set
of the alarm and the robber was apprehended.
What number do you think the robber should have said?
The robber should have said 3 (three) the number of letters in the number the
vault said.
