Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions, from 51 to 60
The ocean bottom- a region nearly 2.5 times greater than total land area of the Earth- is a vast
frontier that even today is largely unexplored and uncharted. Until about a century ago , the deepocean floor was completely inaccessible, hidden beneath waters averaging over 3,6000 meters deep.
Totally without light and subjected to intense pressures hundreds of times greater than at the Earths
surface, deep-ocean bottom is a hostile environment to humans , in some ways as forbidding and remote
as the void of outer space.
Although researchers have taken samples of deep-ocean rocks and sediments for over a century,
the first detailed global investigation of the ocean bottom did not actually start until 1968, with the
beginning of the National Science Foundations Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP). Using techniques
first developed for the offshore oil gas industry, the Dads drill ship , the Glomar Challenger, was able
to maintain a steady position on the oceans surface and drill in very deep waters, extracting samples of
sediments and rock from the ocean floor.
The Glomar Challenger completed 96 voyages in a 15 year research program that ended in
November 1983. During this time, the vessel logged 600,000 kilometers and took almost 20,000 core
samples of seabed sediments and rocks at 624 drilling sites around the world . The Glomar Challengers
core samples have allowed geologists to reconstruct what the planet looked like hundreds of millions of
years ago and to calculate what it will problem look like millions of years in the future. Today , largely
Trang 3

on the strength of evidence gathered during the Glomar Challengers voyages, nearly all earth scientists
agree on the theories of plate tectonics and continental drift that explain many of the geological
processes that shape the Earth.
The cores of sediment drilled by the Glomar Challenger have also yielded information critical to
understanding the worlds past climates . Deep-ocean sediments provide a climatic record stretching
back hundreds of millions of years, because they are largely isolated from the mechanical erosion and
the intense chemical and biological activity that rapidly destroy much land-based evidence of past
climates. This record has already provided insights into the patterns and causes of past climatic changeinformation that may be used to predict future climates

correct answer to each of the questions, from 71 to 80
Herman Melville, an American author best known today for his novel Moby Dick, was actually more
popular during his lifetime for some of his other works. He traveled extensively and used the knowledge
gained during his travels as the basis for his early novels. In 1837, at the age of eighteen, Melville signed as
a cabin boy on a merchant ship that was to sail from his Massachusetts home to Liverpool, England. His
experiences on this trip served as a basis for the novel Redburn (1849). In 1841, Melville set out on a
whaling ship headed for the South Seas. After jumping ship in Tahiti, he wandered around the islands of
Tahiti and Moorea. This South Sea island sojourn was a backdrop to the novel Omoo (1847). After three
years away from home, Melville joined up with a U.S. naval frigate that was returning to the eastern United
States around Cape Horn. The novel White Jacket (1850) describes this lengthy voyage as a navy seaman.
With the publication of these early adventure novels, Melville developed a strong and loyal following among
readers eager for his tales of exotic places and situations. However, in 1851, with the publication of Moby
Dick, Melville's popularity started to diminish. Moby Dick, on one level the saga of the hunt for the great
white whale, was also a heavily symbolic allegory of the heroic struggle of humanity against the universe.
The public was not ready for Melville's literary metamorphosis from romantic adventure to philosophical
symbolism. It is ironic that the novel that served to diminish Melville's popularity during his lifetime is the
one for which he is best known today.

answer to each of the question from 41 to 50
Recent technological advances in manned and unmanned vehicles, along with breakthroughs in satellite
technology and computer equipment, have overcome some of the limitations of divers and diving equipment for
scientists doing research on the great oceans of the world. Without a vehicle, divers often became sluggish, and their
mental concentration was severely limited. Because underea pressure affects their speech organs, communication
among divers has always been difficult or impossible. But today, most oceanographers avoid the use of vulnerable
human divers, preferring to reduce the risk to human life and make direct obervations by means of instruments that are
lowered into the ocean, from samples take from the water, or from photographs made by orbiting satellites. Direct
observations of the ocean floor can be made not only by divers but also by deep-diving submarines in the water and
even by the technology of sophisticated aerial photgraphy from vantage points above the surface of more than seven
miles and cruise at depths of fifteen thousand feet. In addition, radio-equipped buoys can be operated by remote
control in order to transmit information back to land-based laboratories via satellite. Particularly important for ocean
study are data about water temperature, currents, and weather. Satellite photographs can show the distribution of sea
ice, oil slicks, and cloud formations over the ocean, Maps created from satellite pictures can represent the temperature
and the color of the oceans surface, enabling researchers to study the ocean currents from laboratories on dry land.
Furthermore, computers help oceanographers to collect, organize, and analyze data from submarines and satellites. By
creating a model of the oceans movement and characteristics, scientists can predict the patterns and possible effects of
the ocean on the enviroment.
Recently, many oceanographers have been relying more on satellites and computers than on research ships or
even submarine vehicles because they can supply a greater range of information more quickly and more effectively.
Some of humankinds most serious problems, especially those concerning energy and food, may be solved with the
help of observations made possible by this new technology.

answer to each of the questions from 66 to 75.
Colors and Emotions
Colors are one of the most exciting experiences in life. I love them, and they are just as important to me as
emotions are. Have you ever wondered how the two are so intimately related?
Color directly affects your emotions. Color both reflects the current state of your emotions, and is something
that you can use to improve or change your emotions. The color that you choose to wear either refects your current
state of being, or reflects the color or emotion that you need.
The colors that you wear affect you much more than they affect the people around you. Of course thay also
affect anyone who comes in contract with you, but you are the one saturated with the color all day ! I even choose
items around me based on their color. In the morning, I choose my clothes based on the color or emotion that I need
for the day. So you can consciously use color to control the emotions that you are exposed to, which can help you to feel
better.
Color, sound, and emotions are all vibrations. Emotions are literally energy in motion; they are meant to move
and flow. This is the reason that real feelings are the fastest way to get your energy in motion. Also, flowing energy is
exactly what creates healthy cells in your body. So, the fastest wau to be healthy is to be open to your real feelings.
