Petroleum Processes and Control

To be submitted on 30/12/2016
Consider the following furnace temperature control scheme using cascade control

1. Explain the role that each controller plays in the control scheme.
2. Why do we need to use a cascade control scheme in this case?
3. Draw a block diagram of the cascade control system with two disturbance
variables, one acting on the inner loop and the other one on the outer loop.
Identify what these disturbance variables could be and their impact on the
process.
4. Draw a reduced block diagram with the inner loop represented by its transfer
function.
5. Use the data below to determine the transfer function relating the output (hot
oil temperature deviation from steady state) to the inner loop disturbance and
to investigate its stability.
6. Use the data below to determine the transfer function relating the output (hot
oil temperature deviation from steady state) to the set temperature deviation
and to investigate its stability.
7. Suppose that the transfer function of the cascade control system was:

20
= 3
2
+ 6 + 11 + 6

determine the time response of the cascade control scheme to a set point
step change of unit magnitude and plot the results on a graph.
Note: this expression has no relation to the expression found in the previous
question
