Q1.) What did you hope to accomplish with this writing?

In this essay, I tried to analyze the characters in The Great Gatsby book and
decide who earns the title of the most respectable character in the book.
Then, I tried to analyze Gatsbys character and proof why he deserves the
title.
Q2.) What do you think you did well in this writing?
I think I did a good job in supporting my thesis by providing good reasons as
to why Gatsby is the most respectable character in the book.
Q3.) What are areas of weakness in this essay?
I think I could add more details and maybe provide a wider perspective on
his interactions with the other characters. Characters interactions with the
other characters gives more insight on their personalities and where do they
stand in the story.
Q4.) After the peer review and self revision, what are the changes that you
made?
My partner suggested for me to add more details to my essay and thats
what I tried to do.
Q5.) What would you specifically like me to look for in this essay?
I would like you to look at how can I make my writing more interesting and to
see how well I did in that. Im still working on this area.

The Great Gatsby Essay

Characters are an essential element in story writing. They are
the primary factor in creating the flow of a story. Including different
types of characters in a story results in different kinds of conflicts,
tensions, and resolutions (Prudchenko). A story that lacks deep insight
into the personalities and the historical backgrounds of its characters
will eventually fail to keep the readers interest. In The Great Gatsby by
F. Scott Fitzgerald, he successfully brings his characters to live with his
deep insight into their personalities and descriptions of their behaviors
and attitudes. He manages to create memorable characters, such as
Jay Gatsby, The title character, and protagonist of the novel. Jay
Gatsby is the most respectable character in the book because, even
though the many crimes that he committed, his personality shows
many good sides about it that make him stand out from the rest of the
characters.
First of all, Gatsby shows great determination and ambition

throughout the whole story. He has always believed that he was made
for greatness and was unable to accept the reality in which he was
born, which if compared to his high standards was hugely unsatisfying.
Even though Gatsbys high standards seemed as if they were
unattainable at the beginning of his life, he didnt give up on his
dreams until fate made them possible. His peculiar stubborn attitude
and determination become more apparent as the reader is introduced
to Gatsbys love life. After five years of separation Gatsby is still
determined to win Daisys heart. He is indeed ready to do anything to
win his pursuit. Gatsby even gets involved in criminal activity to gain
the social position he thought necessary to win Daisy. Moreover, he
persisted in the quest for Daisys heart, despite the complications of
the situation because Daisy was married to Tom Buchman. Gatsbys
high ambitions and great determination make him a character to
remember.
Despite Gatsbys great wealth, he exerts a very humble
personality. He invites different people with different financial statuses
to join his parties. He also doesnt mind interacting with those people.
Many rich people prefer to interact with individuals who are rich like
them, which reminds us of Gatsbys past before he became wealthy. He
was poor at some point in his life, which explains his neutral manner
towards both rich and poor, as he has experienced being both. He also
doesnt mind becoming friends with Nick, who is not rich nor has a

social status. Gatsbys humble character is very peculiar, as most rich

people are known to be arrogant and snobby, which adds to the aspect
of respect to Gatsbys character.
Gatsby is depicted as a very charming person. He has a unique
smile that impresses everyone who looks at it. He also has a peculiar
way of talking that only suits an extraordinary person like Gatsby. The
lavish parties that Gatsby hold are another example of his extravagant
character. Gatsby has a personality that represents the era of the
1920s when prosperity and extravagancy was a common thing.
Therefore, he comes out again as a very peculiar character in the book.
Finally, its important to look at the different sides of a
characters personality in a story because it gives us a wider
perspective of the book. In this story, Gatsby happens to be the most
respectable character in it due to the many unique sides he has about
his personality such as his determination, high ambitions, humbleness
and charming personality.
