egymstl krdezgettk, hogy kell mondani
angolul, hogy n most elmegyek. Csittgattuk
egymst, hogy csak trelem! Nos, a trelem
rzst terem, s ez gy is lett ebben az esetben is.
Eleinte, szemly szerint nekem, nagyon nehz
volt egyrszt azrt, mert nem vagyok top-on az
angolban, msrszt, mert nem vagyok tizennyolc

Preface
Majoring andragogy at University of Pecs
Faculty of Humanities I was lucky to take a
Japanese language course for beginners. It was a
great experience for me as I have always liked
Eastern cultures. I used to do judo and Kung Fu
too but only as a hobby. Well the first class
came and Tomoko, who was our teacher, just did
not want to speak Hungarian only English. This
stroke us all. We were 6 in our group out of
which 2 of us spoke no English, 2 of us spoke
some English and the rest spoke English quite
well. The girls were asking from each other nhow
do you say it in English: I am leaving now.n We
were soothing each other and said just be
patient. Well all things really come to those
who wait and this is what has happened in this
case too. For me personally it was very hard in
the beginning because my English is not perfect
and I am not eighteen years old either. Tndi
graduated from English thus her English
knowledge was quite fresh and Livi could
practice her English abroad before not
mentioning that both were very young.

Tomoko nagyon j tanrunk volt, kedves, vidm,
szrakoztat, de azrt szigor is. Heti kt
alkalommal 2-2 rnk volt. Minden alkalommal
j szavakat, j tmt vettnk, s kzben,
meglls nlkl a hiragana abc jabb 10 tagjval
ismerkedtnk meg. Japnban 4 fle rsmd van;
a romaji, hiragana, katakana, kanji. Tanrnnk
eleinte a latin bets trst hasznlta (romaji)
gy kb. a kurzus els harmadban ksbb
viszont mr szinte csak a hiragant s a katakant

Of course I should not forget about the only male


classmate we had Laci who encouraged us to
have a common email address and who created
that too. We could upload class material here so
that in case of absence from class nobody had a
backlog. This was the place where we could
inform each other of the useful Japanese sites
and this is how we got grammar summaries from
Tomoko. So right at the beginning two of us
dropped out but us four helped each other all the
way the through.
Once Laci took a group picture of us in the yard
of the university. Tomoko was a very good
teacher of ours kind cheerful entertaining but
strict as well.
We had two classes twice a week. Each time we
learned new words and took new topic during
which we had to learn 10 new signs of the
Hiranga ABC. There are 4 types of writing style
in Japan the romaji, hiragana, katakana and the
kanji. Our teacher used Latin characters in the
beginning of our course till about one third of it
but after that she used hiragana and katakana
only. Yet of course we asked her to write down
words the ordinary way too when we were stuck.
She did not hesitate much and tested us every
second week.

Aztn origamiztunk is valamikor Valentin nap

szvecske, s akkor egysgesen mindenki azt

szveget is megkaptuk persze, japnul s
angolul.

She did not care much if we could keep up with


her she just encouraged us and I am very grateful
for this. In this period we learned to write
characters, read katakana and hiragana characters
ana also some kanji characters.
She seasoned her classes with fn games. It was
never boring and time went by very fast. We did
not realize that classes lasted almost always
longer than they were supposed to.
There was a game when she wrote the hiragana
ABC on the board and gave us the same
characters on different pieces of papers and told
us to put the characters in order. We laughed and
asked if she was serious. We thought we are
going to stay there till night. But we did not. We
could put it in order in time.
Then we played origami too sometimes around
Valentine^ Day. We could choose what we
wanted to make out of paper. Tndi choose heart
as a form to make and then everybody folded
that because it was easier to explain.
We learned two songs as well that we listened to
in class and then she sent it to us by email. We
got the text of course both in Japanese and in
English.

Whafs more she invited Zsolt once to tell us


about his experience he collected when he was in
Japan as a scholarship student.
I learned a lot during this almost three monthslong period. It was very intensive.
In average I spent three to four hours a day
studying Japanese. I practiced the abc-s I
transcribed the texts given in hiragana or
katakana into romaji then I typed them and sent
them to Tomoko for correction. All of this
communicated in English.
Home assignment time has come that compiled
of oral and written parts. I did pretty good as I
got 95%. At the end she taught us kanji
characters and told us about Japanese calligraphy
as well.
In return I draw her portrait that is on the cover
of this book.

kezdetn, sokat segtett volna. A knyv

hogy npszerstsem a japn nyelvet, s segtsek
azoknak a btor embereknek, akik bele merik
vgni fejszjket a japn nyelv tanulsba.

Dear Reader!
Now you are holding a textbook that is written
by a student of Japanese language who herself
has missed Japanese language textbook from the
bookstores.
When I compiled this book I based my work on
the fact that I had no help whatsoever when I
started studying the Japanese language. I was
looking for a book but I could not find one even
in Budapest that I liked. So the idea of this book
originates from the fact that there might be a
need for such a textbook. I am sure if this
material written here had been present for me
when I started studying it would have helped me
a lot.
When writing this book my goal was to make the
Japanese language more popular and by this help
those who are brave enough to start studying
Japanese.
Of course it is very few that I can now publish
but it can only be useful in the beginning. If not
any other ways then in the way that you look at
this work critically. You already honor me if you
are reading this.

I compiled this book as it was presented to us


during the course.
I wrote in English too because we communicated
in English with Tomoko and I do not think it
would hurt anybody. Please do not expect
scientific grammatical explanations from me but
accept this from me with ease and love the way
the title says so too. This book gives a small
introduction to the Japanese language.
At the end of the book I am giving you the list of
websites I have collected that can be useful in the
process of studying.
I studied Japanese with love and curiosity and
this would be my good advice to you to do so
too. I had many experience connected to
studying. And Japanese pronunciation is not as
hard as the English either.
So lets go!

When we write it down with hiragana we should


use

ha instead o f

wa. This is an exception


at pronunciation.
In case of interrogative sentences we do not use
question mark but p u t

ka in the end.
So if we put ,
ka at the end of an affirmative
sentence we get an interrogative one.
For the time being the word order is flexible we
can move words around but the verb should be at
the end of the sentence.

I should not be present all the time just as


well as it is in Hungarian because it can be seen
from the context.
The pronunciation of characters does not differ
much from what is written here. They are
pronounced short but of course there are long
and short vowels and consonants just as well as
in our language. (Hungarian)
I will not always write down the pronunciation. I
will skip it where it is evident. Japanese do not
use space only we do. Now we separate words
just for the sake of ease.
At the end of the book in the dictionary I put
together the words appeared in the book and their
Japanese transcript with hiragana or in case of

foreign words with katakana and kanji. I also put


hiragana and katakana ABC in a table format.

Csittgattuk egymst, hogy csak trelem! Nos, a trelem
rzst terem, s ez gy is lett, ebben az esetben is."
Ezt, az els knyvemet nagyon lelkes nyelvtanulkcnl
rtam s szeretettel ajnlom mindenkinek, aki csak egy
kicsit is rdekldik a japn nyelv irnt. A knyv nem
nyelvtanknyv, de
nyelvtani
elemekkel t/clcll
tanfolyami tananyag beszmolja.
A knyv hrom nyelven rdott, magyar, angol s japn,
mivel tanrnnk angol nyelven tantott, gy cn is bcnl
hagytam a knyvben az angol mondatokat.
A nullrl indultam s mg csak a japn nyelvtanuls
elejen jrok azt vallom, hogy rdekldssel, kitartssal
brmilyen nyelv elsajtthat.

As a student o f the masters


course in andragogy in the
University o f Pcs, I had the
pleasure to have participated in
an intensive language course in
Japanese for beginners.
Well, there came the time o f the first lesson, and Tomoko,
our teacher did not say a word in Hungarian, she only
spoke English. That shocked everybody. Of the six people
in our group two did not speak English at all, two had a
little knowledge o f it and two possessed a fairly good
command o f English. The girls asked each other how to
say: I'm leaving. We tried to calm everybody encouraging
them to be patient. Well, patience always bears fruits as
this also happened in our case. 1^have written this first
book o f mine as an enthusiastic language learner and I
recommend it to everybody who takes a slight interest in
Japanese language. This book is not a language book; it
is a report o f a language course with some grammer
exercises.
The book is written in three -Hungarian, English,
Japanese- languages, as our teacher taught us in English,
so I also left her English sentences in the book.
Although I started as a complete beginner, and am still at
the beginning o f learning Japanese, I am convinced that
one can learn every language with some interest and
perseverance.
