ABSTRACT
Background and Purpose : Several studies have shown the association
between educational level and physical activity with cognitive function in elderly. Both of these can prevent the cognitive decline. The decline in cognitive function may cause dementia. The purpose of this study was to invetstigate the association between educational level and physical activuiy with cognitive function in elderly. Method : This was a cross-sectionl study with purposive sampling non probability method in Kelurahan Darat Kota Medan. Cognitive function was measured by using MMSE (Mini Mental Stage Examination) and ACE-R (Addenbrookes Cognitive Examination Revision). Physical activity was measured by using GPPAQ (The General Practice Physical Activity Questionnaire) which consisted of inactive, moderately inactive, moderately active and active. Results : This study was consisted of 18 men (45%) and 22 women (55%) with 30 patients (75%) were at the age 60-69 years. Based on MMSE score, it was found significants association with age (p=0.001), educational level (p=0.0001) and physical activity (p=0.0001). The mean of probable cognitive impairment in the group of age 80 (20.002.708), not schooling (20.202.387), primary school (22.561.878), and inactive physical activity (21.003.464). While in the score of ACER, it was found significants association with age (p=0.0001), educational level (p= 0.0001), and physical activity (p= 0.0001). The mean of ACER score 82 was found in the group of age 70-79 (77.179.453), age 80 (58.2514.592), not schooling (56.408.473), primary school (69.893.100), inactive physical activity (64.1413.910), and moderately inactive (74.628.047). Conclusion : This study showed a significant association between educational level and physical activity with cognitive function.
