Introduction

Your Data Center is more than a space that simply houses servers and network equipment
it is a system. The term system is defined as a set of interacting or interdependent entities, real
or abstract, forming an integrated whole. Within the Data Center, the various entities that make
up the system work together to protect and manage both current and future equipment, the data
transmitted, and the thousands of connections between servers and switches and the outlying areas
of the network. All of these entities are interrelated and connected by the structured cabling system,
which designers and end-users are striving to design for better scalability, flexibility, manageability,
availability and lower total cost of ownership. Belden understands that designing the Data Center
structured cabling system is a complex and often confusing task with many options to weigh and
consider, and were here to help. That is why weve developed this guide as a living document,
adding more configurations over time.
General Cabling Considerations

Before designing the backbone and horizontal

cabling in your Data Center, there are several
factors to consider:

Scalability
Calculate the required life expectancy of
the cabling infrastructure by determining
current and future requirements for data
transmission between functional areas of the
Data Center. Ensure ample space to support
current and future number of ports, servers
and switches.

Flexibility and Manageability

Clarify how frequently you will need to
make moves, adds and changes, and if you
anticipate needing to reconfigure functional
areas of the Data Center. Also, determine
cabling distances and limitations from
one functional area to another and ensure
ample pathway space to reroute or add
more cabling.

www.belden.com

Availability
Determine required uptime for the Data
Center and establish level of redundancy
for cabling uplinks, power, and cooling.
Determine overall level of security for
equipment in the Data Center.

Total Cost of Ownership

Determine current and future cost per
square foot of the Data Center based on
all scalability, flexibility, manageability
and availability requirements.
Each of these elements will have a role in
determining the design of each of the
functional areas of a Data Center and the
cabling products selected.

Introduction (continued)

Functional Area

The TIA-942 Telecommunications Infrastructure

Standard for Data Centers addresses cabling
infrastructure in the Data Center and defines
specific functional areas to help determine
the placement of cabling, components and
equipment. Following TIA-942 for functional
area layout is the first step in establishing a
well-designed cabling infrastructure for
your Data Center.

Backbone Cabling and Horizontal Cabling

Backbone Cabling provides connections
between the entrance room, MDA and HDA.
Horizontal Cabling provides connection
between the HDA and EDA, including the ZDA.

1.800.BELDEN.1

Data Center Horizontal Cabling Topologies

To connect the main core routers and switches

in the MDA to the end equipment located in
the EDA(s), cabling can be designed in various
topologies, each with its own benefits and
disadvantages.

Cabling capacity of pathways

In a centralized switching topology, Backbone

Cabling from the MDA runs to switches in
the HDA(s), which connect to the EDA(s) via
Horizontal Cabling. This topology can also
deploy a ZDA within the Horizontal Cabling.
In a distributed topology, the MDA connects
directly to the EDA(s) via Horizontal Cabling,
eliminating the HDA. To determine which
topology is best for your specific Data Center
situation, there are several factors to consider:

Physical space available for

Number of ports deployed in the EDA(s)

Frequency of moves, adds, and changes

to each functional area

Ample pathway capacity must be available
to converge Horizontal Cabling from EDA(s)
to a single HDA.

Topology Number 1:
Centralized with Cross-connect

the HDA patch panels. The cabling from each

switch in the HDA terminates on patch panels
that mirror the switch ports. Each switch
patch panel (Equipment Field) is then crossconnected to a second patch panel (Cabling
Field) that mirrors patch panel ports
in each EDA.

In this topology, Backbone Cabling from the

MDA connects to switches in the HDA. All
cabling is centralized in one cross-connect
in the HDA and distributed from the HDA to
multiple EDA(s) or rows. This scenario uses a
three-connector channel where Horizontal
Cabling runs from the EDA patch panels to

Topology Number 1:
Centralized with (end-of-row) Cross-connect (continued)

Benefits of Centralized Cross-connect

Centralized Cross-connect with a ZDA

Enables permanent connections to switches

While not widely deployed, a ZDA can be

used in the Horizontal Cabling from the HDA
to the EDA(s). This scenario uses a four-connector
channel where either one or both patch panels
of the cross-connect are located within a ZDA
(interconnect) or a ZCA (cross-connect). The use
of a ZDA means that functional areas can be
easily reconfigured within the Data Center, and
cross-connects can be located in completely
separate areas for maximum
security and cooling efficiency. On the other
hand, the use of a four-connector channel
and ZDA requires the maximum number of
terminations/connectors and patch panels.

so that sensitive ports are never touched.

Improves flexibility and manageability
with all moves, adds, and changes made at
the patch panels in the cross-connect.
Any switch can be connected to any
equipment location.
Centralized cross-connect can be placed
anywhere in the Data Center to reserve
premium cooling space for active equipment.
Optimizes cabinet utilization by reserving
cabinet space for servers.
Keeps equipment secure if necessary.
The cross-connect can use either modular
patch panels or IDC (Insulation Displacement
Connection) blocks.

Disadvantages of
Centralized Cross-connect

May require longer copper cable runs

to EDA(s) in large Data Centers.
Requires a greater number of terminations
and patch panels.
Requires ample pathway space to converge
cabling from EDA(s) to HDA.
Requires more space to accommodate
patch panels.

www.belden.com

Considerations for cabling in the ZDA

include the following:

How many copper and fiber ports

are required in the ZDA?

The performance of minimally compliant

connectivity if horizontal cabling between
ZDA and HDA is less than
15 meters (49 ft).

1.800.BELDEN.1

Topology Number 2:
Partially Centralized with (end-of-row) Inter-connect

In this topology, the Backbone Cabling

from the MDA is connected to switches in
multiple HDA(s) located within an EDA or row,
essentially locating network equipment closer
to the EDA(s). This scenario uses two-connector
channels where Horizontal Cabling runs from
the EDA patch panels to the HDA patch panels.
To connect a new server to the network, the
EDA patch panel port is connected to the
switch port.

SW

Benefits of Partially
Centralized Switching

Minimizes distances of copper cabling

runs in larger Data Centers.
Reduces number of terminations
and patch panels.
Reduces amount of required pathway space.
Patch panels and switches can be located in
adjacent racks/cabinets.

1.800.BELDEN.1

Topology Number 2:
Partially Centralized with (end-of-row) Inter-connect (continued)

Disadvantages of Partially
Centralized Switching

Reduces security and efficient use of

premium cooling space by eliminating
ability to locate single HDA anywhere in
the Data Center.
Reduces manageability with moves, adds,
and changes made at patch panels in each
row vs. one central location.
Reduces flexibility because any switch
cannot be easily connected to any
equipment location.
Reduces scalability because unused switch
ports in one row cannot be easily allocated
for another equipment row.

Point-to-Point Connection Scenario

The partially centralized topology can also

include a point-to-point connection scenario
where switches are located in the HDA separate
from the servers in the EDA, but no crossconnect or inter-connect is deployed. This option
is the least expensive cabling option as it requires
only long patch cords that connect directly
from the switch to the server, with no patch
panels required. However, the point-to-point
scenario makes for difficult moves, adds, and
changes, and slack management. This scenario
is also a poor return on investment because
new patch cords lengths are required when
a new server is added, and patch cords are
discarded when servers are decommissioned.

One-connector Channel with

Patch Panels Only in the HDA

Another connection scenario for this topology

includes a one-connector channel where patch
panels are located only in the HDA. Switches
connect to patch panels in the HDA, which
connect directly to equipment in the EDA.
This connection scenario may be used in
smaller applications with few equipment
ports, but where isolating sensitive switch
ports is still desired. One benefit is that the
mounting rail in the server enclosures could be
used 100% for servers since no patch panels
are used in the EDA. However the permanent
cabling deployed in the horizontal limits
the flexibility.

www.belden.com

1.800.BELDEN.1

Topology Number 3:
Distributed In-cabinet (top-of-rack) Switching

In this topology, the Backbone Cabling from

the MDA is connected directly to switches
within each cabinet of the EDA, essentially
eliminating the use of an HDA.

The Storage Area Network (SAN)

As the amount of data and storage required

continues to increase, Data Center managers
are looking to implement faster backup and
retrieval speeds, better scalability to add more
storage, and overall better flexibility and
manageability. As a result, network storage is
now being moved away from other servers to
a separate network of its own, known as the
SAN. The SAN is strictly dedicated to transmitting large amounts of data between servers
and storage devices such as disk arrays, tape
libraries, and optical jukeboxes. This is most
often accomplished using fiber cross-connect
or inter-connect technology for maximum
data transfer rates.
The use of a centralized SAN cross-connect
offers the following benefits:

Enables permanent connections to switches

Cabling Considerations for the SAN

Pre-terminated Solutions

When allocating space and designing cabling

and connectivity for the SAN, there are many
factors and options to consider.

For easy, quick, and reliable deployment and

reconfigurations in the SAN, pre-terminated
solutions are an ideal choice. These connector
modules feature multiple pre-terminated fiber
connectors on one side that transition to one
plug-and-go MPO connector on the other.
Pre-terminated solutions can provide the
following benefits in a SAN environment:

Ensure plenty of space for scalability

by determining the number of servers
connected to the SAN both now and
in the future.

When deciding between a cross-connect

or inter-connect, determine the frequency
of moves, adds, and changes and level
of security required.

When selecting cabling and connector type,

and termination method, determine amount
of bandwidth required, cabling distance
limitations, return loss budget for the
application, and level of expertise to
connectorize and install fiber.

Faster overall deployment.

No fiber connectorization expertise required.
Fast and easy moves, adds, and changes with
plug-and-go application.

Easy slack management and

protection of fibers.

High density for more space and scalability.

so that sensitive ports are never touched.

Improves flexibility and manageability with

all moves, adds, and changes made at the
fiber patch panels in the cross-connect.

Any switch can be connected to any

equipment location.

SAN cross-connect can be placed anywhere

in the Data Center for improved security
with all switch ports mirrored on fiber
patch panels.

Data Center Cabling Sample Configurations

The following Data Center cabling configurations

represent typical layouts often encountered
in Data Centers, but they are not necessarily
connected together within the same Data
Center. The information presented in these
samples is intended to help the designer of the
cabling infrastructure choose the right Belden
products to optimize Data Center scalability,
flexibility, manageability, availability and lower
total cost of ownership. Belden can work with
customers to design alternative configurations
using the same components to address specific
Data Center needs.
The configurations detailed on the following
pages include:
Partially Centralized Inter-connect in a
672-port HDA.
Centralized Cross-connect in a 672 x 672port HDA.
EDA with 96 Copper Ports from the HDA
and 48 Fiber Ports from SAN.
Cross-connect Cabling for a 384 X 720port SAN.
More configurations will be added over time.

Cable Installation and

Routing Guidelines

Using back-to-back vertical managers with

high-density fingers in the back provides
intuitive routing by better guiding the cables.
A bundle size of 12 cables is the optimum
vertical manager fill ratio. See calculation
tables on the following page for capacity.

Cables should be inserted in a specific order

for proper management:
When cabling enters the rack from
under-floor cable pathways, bundles of
cables intended for the upper patch
panels should be routed first. These
cables should be placed at the bottom
of the channel and then connected.
Layers of bundles are then laid in an
orderly manner on top of each other
with cables connected to patch panels
routed from the upper part to lower
part of the rack.

Managing patch cords from both sides in

a patch panel (ports 1-12 and 13-24)
facilitates patch cord dressing and allows
better visibility to the port labeling.
Whenever possible, populate patch cords in
the patch panels by progressing from the
outer ports toward the center.
Four Simple Rules for Optimum Patch
Cord Management

Cable slack must never be left hanging loose

in the channel. This can cause bunching of
the cords at the bottom.

Always use Velcro ties to guide patch cords

and manage slack.

Always use the shortest cord available for

the connection.

Create patching zones between Cabling

Distribution and Equipment fields.

When cabling enters the rack from

overhead cable pathways, bundles of
cables intended for the lower patch
panels should be routed first. These
cables should be placed at the bottom
of the channel and then connected.
Layers of bundles are then laid in an
orderly manner on top of each other
with cables connected to the patch
panels routed from the lower part to
the top of the rack.

Cabling Sample Number 1:

Centralized Cross-connect in a 672 x 672-port HDA

This example demonstrates how to cable a

672 x 672-port HDA using a centralized crossconnect. The switch patch panels (Equipment
Field) located in the center of each rack both
contain 14 24-port patch panels for a total of 672
ports that mirror switch ports. Those patch panels
are then cross-connected to patch panels (Cabling
Field) located in the top and bottom of the racks,
which mirror patch panel ports in each EDA.
HDA Cabling Considerations:

Number of ports in each EDA.

Distance limitation to reach EDAs.
Capacity of pathways converging to HDA.
Capacity to install patch panels close to switches.
Level of security required in HDA.
Frequency of moves, adds, and changes.

Cabling Sample Number 2:

Partially Centralized Inter-Connect in a 672-port HDA

This example demonstrates how a 672-port

HDA is cabled using a partially centralized
topology with inter-connect. Within this
HDA, two 336-port switches each connect to
fourteen 24-port patch panels via permanent
cabling. From each patch panel, cabling
terminates to patch panels or equipment
in the EDA (not shown).
HDA Cabling Considerations:

Number of ports in each EDA.

Distance limitation to reach EDAs.
Capacity of pathways converging to HDA.
Capacity to install patch panels
close to switches.
Level of security required in HDA.
Frequency of moves, adds, and changes.

www.belden.com

HDA Inter-connect Installation Tips:

HDA Installation Alternatives:

AngleFlex patch panels allow intuitive patch

Can be assembled in a high-density cabinet

cord management and help keep clean HDA

connection fields.
Horizontal managers below and above the
switch increase flexibility for switch access.
Configure AngleFlex patch panels with
left/right cable management per installation
guidelines supplied with product.
Avoid too much patch cord slack for
optimum operation. Refer to the table for
patch cord length recommendations.
Cisco Catalyst switches (shown) should be
cabled from the right to avoid blocking the
cooling fan.
Manage patch cord slack at the patch
panel level to avoid congesting the
entry of the switch.

(XHD84-Series). See Product Offering.

When using the high-density (XHD84 Series)

cabinet, use the center and side extension
kits (XHD8443CXF and XHG8443SXF) to
increase the capacity of the vertical channels
and properly manage patch cords. See
Product Offering.

Cabling Sample Number 3:

EDA with 96 Copper Ports from HDA and 48 Fiber Ports from SAN

This example demonstrates how to cable an

EDA containing 96 copper ports from the HDA
and 48 fiber optic ports from the SAN. From
the HDA, 96 copper cables terminate to two
48-port high-density patch panels, which in
turn connect to UTP ports on the servers. From
the SAN, fiber optic cabling terminates to four
LC adapter modules each equipped with 12 LC
duplex connectors for a total of 48 LC duplex
fiber ports. The adapter modules are housed in
a high-density 1U fiber patch panel.

EDA Installation Tips:

EDA Alternatives:

Using 30-inch wide enclosures provides better

Use MPO-LC 24-fiber Modules (AX103729)

patch cord management to the servers.

Using 1U 48-port patch panels saves 2 RU for

server installation.

Assembling 30-inch wide enclosures provides

a 7-inch wide vertical management channel
between enclosures.

Install the KeyConnect patch panels per the

and Multi-MPO 24-fiber assemblies (NXCUPFX-PHXFEN-PHPFEN-O-0000) for quick

deployment between EDA and HDA or SAN.

If cabling is distributed under raised floor,

installing the patch panels at the bottom of
the cabinet will simplify cable management
within the cabinet.

installation guidelines supplied with product.

EDA Cabling Considerations:

Maximum number of servers allowed

in enclosure based on power/cooling
limitations.

Number of copper ports required

by each server.

Number of fiber ports required

by each server.

Space for cable and patch cord

management, including slack.

Space required for additional

equipment, such as power and
environmental monitoring.

Install the FiberExpress Ultra 1U shelf per the

installation guidelines supplied with product.

Use a 1U horizontal cable manager to route

patch cords to the left after exiting from the
right of the panel.

Route copper and fiber patch cords in two

separate vertical channels. Route fiber patch
cords on the same side as Cabinet Distribution
Units (CDUs). If two CDUs are used in the
enclosure, follow power separation guidelines
per the TIA-942 standard (Table 2 in section
7.3.1) to avoid electro-magnetic interference
on copper cords.

Avoid too much patch cord slack for optimum

operation. Refer to table for patch cord
length recommendations.

Use blanking panels to block unused

spaces on the front side of the servers
for optimum cooling.

Cabling Sample Number 4:

Cross-connect Cabling for a 720-port SAN

This example shows how to cable a 720-port

SAN using a centralized topology with a crossconnect. A SAN switch containing 384 LC
duplex fiber ports connects to 384 LC duplex
fiber ports housed in three, 4U fiber patch
panels via permanent cabling. The 4U fiber
patch panels cross-connect to another 720
ports housed in five, 4U patch panels in the
bottom half of the cabinet. From there, fiber
optic cabling terminates to fiber patch panels
in the EDA. Setting up the SAN as a crossconnect increases security with all switch ports
mirrored on fiber patch panels. This set-up
offers the possibility to expand the SAN to
720 ports in the future.
SAN Cabling Considerations:

Number of servers connected to SAN,

now and future.

Frequency of moves, adds, and changes.
Distance limitations.
Level of security.
Bandwidth required for transmitting data.
Fiber connectorization expertise.
Loss budget for fiber applications.

www.belden.com

SAN Installation Tips:

SAN Alternatives:

The FiberExpress Ultra 4U shelf terminates

Use MPO-LC 24-fiber Modules (AX103729)

144 LC duplex ports and is perfect for

managing a high concentration of
fiber connections.
Using 24-fiber LC cable assemblies between
the switch and the back of the Equipment
Field patch panels enables quick deployment
of new equipment cards.
Ganging high-density cabinet (XHD84 Series)
together creates a 7-inch wide vertical
management channel in the center.
Install the FiberExpress Ultra 4U shelf
per the installation guidelines supplied
with the product.
Avoid too much patch cord slack for
optimum operation. Refer to the table for
patch cord length recommendations.
Use blanking panels to block unused spaces
for optimum cooling.

and Multi-MPO 24-fiber assemblies (NXCUPFX-PHXFEN-PHPFEN-O-0000) for quick

deployment between EDA and HDA or SAN.
