MATERIALS

Banana fritter coating flour, castor sugar, rice flour, sieve shaker, British
and ASTM sieves and weighing balance.

PROCEDURES
1. The sieves were arranged so that the larger size was on top of the
smaller size. Only about 8 sieves were used on the sieve shaker. The
sieve sizes were chosen so that there were only less than 5% on the
top and bottom ends of the sieves.
2. The size apertures and mesh numbers of the sieves were recorded.
3. 200g of banana fritter coating flour was weighed accurately and placed
on the top sieve.
4. The shaker was switched on and the time of 20 minutes was set on
continuous mode.
5. The flour on each sieve was weighed by pouring the flour on a piece of
pre-weighed paper.
6. The readings were tabulated as per Table 3.1.
7. The experiment was repeated with rice flour and castor sugar.
8. The graph of undersize cumulative fractions versus aperture size was
plotted.
9. The histogram of percentage of weight of particles versus aperture size
was plotted.
10. The average size of the particle was measured from Table 3.2.
