Spring Semester Readings 2017

Dear parents and students, below is a list of books that we will be reading in class and as
parallel readings. I suggest purchasing them all at once to ensure they are available for every
student when we begin considering them in class. If you would rather not purchase some or all of
them, check Popes Media Center or local libraries. I have arranged them by Unit:

Unit 4 Drama
o In class reading: Hamlet William Shakespeare (The No Fear Shakespeare
version is permitted)
o Parallel reading: The Glass Menagerie Tennessee Williams (Check Popes MC)

Unit 5 Multicultural Voices

o In class reading: Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier Ishmael Beah
o Parallel reading: Persepolis (Part 1) Marjane Satrapi (This is an
autobiographical graphic novel)

Unit 6 Author Study

o For this units parallel reading, students may pick from among any of the books
written by recipients of the Margaret Edwards Award who won it within their
lifetime. This award recognizes authors and their works for significant and
lasting contribution to young adult literature (www.ala.org/yalsa/edwardsaward). Follow the link to browse through these authors and their books to find
one that appeals to you. Do not choose a book that has been made into a movie or
a book you have read previously.
