Reading:
Derek
Derek is a little boy. He lives with his parents in a small house in a town. They do not have a big
garden.
Derek likes animals very much. One day he says to his father, “ I have a little money, Daddy. Can I buy
a pony, please?”
But his father answers, “ No, Derek, we can’t have a pony in the garden, because it’s too small and we
don’t have a field. People who keep ponies in small gardens instead of a field are unkind. Ponies need a lot
of space.”
Derek doesn’t want to be unkind to a pony, so he never asks his father again.
Later, his father gets a job in another place, and he and his family leave their house in the town and go
to live in a bigger house in the country. It has a beautiful garden and a field nearby. Now, Derek is very
happy.
There is a farm near their house, and there are horses, cows, and a few sheep. Derek goes to visit
them every day. He is five years old now, and he begins to think of a pony again.
“My birthday is next month,” he thinks. “Perhaps Daddy will buy me a pony then.” After some time, he
begins to talk about ponies to his parents again.
It’s his birthday once again and his parents give him a few nice presents – but there is no pony. Derek
is sad.
Suddenly, his Uncle Tom arrives. He is a farmer – and he has a pig pony with him.
“Hello, Derek.” Uncle Tom says, “Happy Birthday. This is your birthday present from me and Aunt
Mary.”
At the beginning Derek is a little afraid because the pony is very big. He looks at it for a few minutes,
and then, he says to his uncle, “ IS he for me, or am I for him?”
