The Indian Institute of Welding Cees ae cui ieora rr cy OPPORTUNITY TO ADD AN ENGINEERING DEGREE DUE Cec ua LED bien mscr ns Tak) The Indian Institute of Welding (ITW-India) is a Premier National Professional Body for the development & advancement of ‘Welding Technology and Science in the country and was established in April 1966 with its head Office in Kolkata. The Institute has members of different classes ie. Corporate Members, Fellow, Member and Associate Member totalling more than 2500. The Institute publishes a quarterly technical journal which is well received within the technical community in India & abroad. The institute aso holds international & national conferences and world class exhibitions on welding products and services at regular intervals. The Institute has 12 branches throughout India. They are regularly conducting various activities including tailored programmes for promotion of knowledge, expertise & skill in welding and related activities. The Institute isa member of the International Institute of Welding (IW). A division of Indian Institute of Welding has been accredited by the International Institute of Welding as it's only "Authorised National Body' (ANB) in India The institute has adopted a Mission to promote Education and Qualification in welding in India in line with International Standards which will be globally recognised and accepted. The goal is to assist in making Indian industry locally and globally competitive in welding related activities Pier cranes India presently consumes about 65 million tons of steel every year, most of which are used for fabrication and construction activities. Steel is used for creating infrastructure roads, bridges etc, for building power plants, petro-chemical and refinery complexes, for railways rolling stock & track, manufacturing ships, locomotives and cars etc A major process used in fabrication is welding. The process is used in fabricating everything we see around us in buildings, bridges, flyover, cats, locomotives & coaches, ship, airplanes, general machinery, consumer durables and defense equipment. In fact for every ton of steel used about 5 kg of weld metal is required to be deposited by different welding processes ‘The sustainable level of per capita consumption of steel is about 300kg/person/year in a developed economy. When a country isin infrastructure creation mode, the consumption goes up even co 1,000 kg/person/ year and finally may stabilise at around 300 kg, The percapita steel consumption for China is 400 kgs and that for South Korea is as high as 935 Kg, presently. Compare this with India's steel consumption of 48 kg/person/year Inspite of the economic slowdown a conservative estimate projects steel consumption in India getting increased to 100 million m.t by 2020. However this may not be able to meet the demand for steel fora developing Indian economy with present extremely low per capita consumption of steel. Obviously, there will be a corresponding growth in welding activities. Advancement in technology in welding process and fabrication material will require professionals with ‘State ofthe Art’ knowledge with sophisticated skills. There is great demand for qualified and knowledgeable welding engineers and other related skilled professionals in fabrication and construction industries, such that expert welding professionals have become a ‘precious commodity’. ont The Institute conducts AMITW examination all over India based on its own course designed to meet industry need and which is approved by Government of India, as equivalent toa Graduate Engincering Degree ofa University. This isan educational programme and certification examination in the field of Welding Engineering. The course curriculum, syllabi and the examination have been so designed as to have equivalence with Engineering Degree as offered by the Indian Universities, or professional bodies like The Institution of Engineers, The Indian Institute of Metals, etc. The Examination is conducted in four parts Posse Esompson cine for Course Name Pe |p = - sper Diploma Roginase Cease Baga Property Course PARTA 6 34 All Subjects 2, | Taermediat Cou PARTB [9 [About depending om nbjecs naied| A aeepe Welding Meany 5. | Final Famiarion FART No Beenpion No Esemption ‘Wali Fngineang Coe Secon | 4 No Faempion gig emai Compa ‘Wel Tecbalogy Couns] Scion | 5 No Beenpion No Faempion iy Z [roe Work & Viva Voew [PART Complory Compulony eg 1, Higher secondary candidates having one year professional experience may register for AMIIW. They must study and pass examinations in about 24 papers by the time he/she completes Parts A, B & C. Part D is based on Project work under authorised supervisor after gaining prescribed three yeats practical experience in welding related industry followed by Viva Voce. Enginecring Degree & Diploma holders are exempted from appearing in examination in many papers & some parts depending oon the nature of their course attended leading to the qualification. These are based on individual's subject combination for which exemptions can be claimed individually. An Engineering Degree holder may be eligible to get exemption in about 60% of the «otal papers forexamination compared to about 30% exemption for a Diploma holder. Engineering Diploma students in a 3 year course may be allowed to register for AMITW in the final year but exemptions will be only available & confirmed after he passes his Diploma Examination. Engineering degree students studying in the 3rd & 4th years in Engineering Degree Colleges are eligible to register. For them a flexible Scheme is being offered. Whereby the candidate is aware from the very beginning the subjects he will get exemption and the subjects he will have co make further studies and appear in examination after graduation, This gives him an opportunity «0 get acquainted with the non-exempted subjects & may select the elective subject suitably to get support ftom college infrastructure in studying them as far as practicable, He will also be able to appear in the non-exempted papers durin, studentship according to his own chosen pace & save time, The students are required to undergo on the job experience in welding related industry fora minimum of three years in case of Diploma holders and one year in case of Degree holders after completing all papers of Part B & Part C of AMIIW and passing final graduation examination before being cligible to submit Project under Part D. 6. ‘The AMIIW Certificate is awarded after one passes all non-exempted papers and completing an approved elective Project work on awelding problem and Viva Voce test etcas per IIW rule. Sere Details of exemptions ete are tailored to individual's academic profile ie based on the subjects studied by him in the college at sufficient required breadeh & depth in the regular curriculum including elective subjects.
