Ifyouwanttobeobtuse:unlimitedplansaregrandfathered,keptforexistingcustomerloyalty
purposesbutnotofferedtonewsubscribers.Theycouldforceeveryone(outofcontract,whichis
everyoneonunlimitedplans)toswitchtotheir100GBplanorsimplyterminateservicejustbecause
theyofferedtheunlimitedplansbackin2011doesnotobligatethemtocontinuetoofferthemin
2017.
Now,havingdefendedthebigredV,letmesaythattheyaredouchebagstodobusinesswithandI
droppedthemlikeahotpotatoonceImovedtoalocationwheretheyweren'ttheonlyproviderwith
decentcoverageinmyneighborhood.

Notquite.Therehavebeenloopholeswhichallowedrenewingunlimitedplansthatwouldhappenif
yougotasubsidizedphoneanddidn'tchangeplans.I'mstillonanunlimitedcontractuntillaterthis
year.Butyourpointistaken,theycouldterminateunlimitedevenforpeopleundercontractifthey
wantedto,butthosepeoplewouldhavetheopportunitytoleavewithoutpayinganearlytermination
fee.

Maybewhentheyfirstreleasedittheyadvertisedthatitwas"literallyunlimited".Butsincethe

Ifthey'reundercontract,perthecontractterms,Verizoncanchangeitatanytimeandmake
unlimitedgoawaybutalsoperthecontract,theuserthenhasachoice.Iftheydon'tlikeit,theycan

Verizonhasn'tbeenreasonableatall...They'vehadtheirasseskickedbytheObamaFCCeverytime
theytriedtoimposelimitsorrestrictions.They'vetriednottopissofftheFCC,andnowthatTrumpis
abouttoguttheagency,Verizonnolongerhasanythingtoworryabout,forthenext4yearsatleast.

Thedealisthesameasithasalwaysbeen.It'sunlimited,butaftertheoriginalcontractperiod
expiresitswitchestoamonthtomonthplan.Atwhichpointeitherpartyofthecontractisfreeto
cancelitforanyreasonattheendofthemonth.Verizonwas,uptilnow,doingthesepeopleafavor
byallowingthemtocontinueunderthetermsoftheoldplan,eventhoughtheynolongerofferedthat
plan.
Iftheyletyouhaveunlimiteddataduringthetimeyouhadtheplan,thenthey'vefulfilledtheir
contractualobligation.Thereisnothinginthecontractwhichsaystheyhavetoallowyoutostayon
thatplaninperpetuity.Andneithershouldtherebe.Otherwiseyourlandlordcouldforceyouto
continuetopayrentaslongashewanted,evenifyouwantedtomoveout.

dataplansonVerizon'snetwork.Thisgenerallyinvolvesstickingwithanupdatedphoneorpaying
retailtobuyaphoneoutright.Verizonreallydoeshavethelargestnetworkwiththebestoverall
coveragewithintheUnitedStatesandthereareplentyofplacesthattherereallyisn'tabetteroption.
Forexample,VerizonLTEserviceisoftenabetterandmoreattractiveinternetoptionthan
marginallyavailableDSLorlaggy,datacappedsatelliteinternetforruralhomeowners.
Granted,I'mnotusing200GB/monththroughmyphoneeither,butIcertainlydorecognizethatthisis
arealproblemforalotofpeople,especiallywhoaren'tnecessarilyclosetoanyothersortoffatdata
pipe.

inthem.Theyareall2yearsfromthedateofthecontractwhichthengoestomonthbymonth
terminatablebyeitherpartyon1monthsnotice.Soitdoeskeeprollingforever,butthelockeddown
periodis2years.

AmongUSCellcarriers,SprintandsomeofitsassociatedMVNOsarestillofferingfullyunlimited
dataplans.It'sdefinitelypossibletogetUnlimitedLTEserviceintheUSA,justnotfromVerizon,ATT
orTmobile.
Ofcourse,thenyou'regoingtobeonSprint'sweirdoCDMAnetwork,butifyou'reinaareasonably

I'mguessinglikemanyothers,theGPisactuallyonalongercontractthatthey'vemanagedtokeep
goingbygettingnewphonesbeforetheircontractexpired.Ifthisisthecase,thechangeincontract
