Professionalism encourages respect among employees.

Working several different jobs

through my studies at Metropolitan State University has allowed me to embrace professionalism
in different settings, including a corporate higher-education financial setting as well as an entry
level hospital kitchen dietary setting. It is important to be reminded that regardless of the setting,
it is important to remain professional and maintain respect and open communication towards
fellow employees.
I focus on trying to be several minutes early to jobs. This is a sign of respect for others
time, as I know supervisors and fellow employees count on me to be on time and ready to work
at my scheduled time. Just as I count on others to carry their fair share of the workload and
responsibilities, I know that I as well can be counted on to be present and dependable.
I find it to also be helpful to remain conscientious of the way a person speaks while at
work. I encourage others to not engage in office gossip by not participating in gossip myself.
I remain professional by only speaking positively of others and to others. If I find myself in a
situation of conflict with another employee or policy, I take the time to sit down with my
supervisor to discuss solutions to the problem. I tend to focus on finding positive ways to deal
with problems, rather than gossiping and ruminating over the issues with employees.
Remaining professional in the workplace is not only important in maintaining respectful
and professional relationships with colleagues and supervisors, but also in maintaining personal
workplace integrity and manners.
