Observation Essay
The cool mountain breeze blew through the pines on a misty summer morning.
Birds chirping all around from their nests in a tree to bushes on the ground. In the
distance I can see the sun start to peek over the mountains as it illuminates the
landscape creating a bright reflection on the crystal blue lake and projecting orangish
colors throughout the entire sky. Its warmth begun to slowly radiate all around reheating
the cold ground.
In the distance the mountains sharp edges and peaks created the skyline. The
mountainside blanketed with tall green pine trees except the area once destroyed by a
landslide which looked bare and desolate compared to its beautiful surroundings. In
front of the mountainside lay the bright green meadows spotted with beautiful purple
and yellow flowers.
Not too far from the meadow was the clear blue lake. The rainbow trout streaked
with colors of red, green, and yellow hungrily searching for his morning meal rippled the
lake by jumping toward the unsuspecting fly. On the other side there was a few ducks
floating in the middle of the reeds. A cool small stream ran out of the lake through the
meadow and towards the tree line.
Just before the tree line was the remnants of a beaver dam. Large logs and
many sticks lay strewn all around. This dam once created by beavers now no longer

blocked the water from proceeding further into the woods instead of flooding parts of the
meadow.
After some time a doe and two fawns warily emerged from the tree line and
began to move into the meadow. The doe took the lead searching for good feed for her
and her two fawns. Her fawns followed closely behind. Eventually the doe stopped and
they began to feed on the many plants. After a while the deer disappeared out of my
sight.
Nearby the branches of two tall pine trees were bent by the weight of a dead tree
which had fallen. The dead trees body had lost all its life. Needles no longer covered
the branches and gave color to it. Most the bark had been stripped off and what once
was brown has become gray. At the top of the dead tree sat a nest carefully put together
by some bird to provide shelter.
Red, orange, green, and yellow grove of quaking aspens appeared to the right of
me. In many of these trees was left the mark of many other people to visit this lake.
Many names, years, and hearts with initials have been carved into many of these tree
trunks leaving black scars.
Two squirrels coming out of some deadfall scampered up a tree and stopped on
a branch near the top. These two squirrels began to chitter and chatter at each other.
Then they started to fight each other over something until they ran back down the tree
to another location.
