QUADRATICS PORTFOLIO ONE

Refer to the assignment page HERE
Qualities of a Mathematician
Throughout your story, please talk about one of the Qualities youve grown in (refer back to
your journal prompts):
Hypothesizing/Experimenting
Explaining/Justifying
Collaborating
Questioning
Growth Mindset
Finding Patterns
Please include at least TWO different qualities of a mathematician in your analysis. Highlight
these examples with the color corresponding to the specific quality.

Narrative

This is our latest factoring quadratics

assignment Water Balloon Contest. We
were supposed to graph/find whos balloon
went the furthest and highest in the
competition.
The first thing I did was:
Write down the information
that was given to us in the X Y
boxes. For example they had given
us jens data in a separate sheet so I
wrote down her starting point which
would be 0,0 and ending point 0,8
and started to graph the rest of the
dots to the graph.
After I looked at the story again and found
new information to build a new graph. The
next possible graph was Imps
It had all of the information on
the separate paper. It had all the
coordinates written down so I copied
it down on my X Y table and started
to graph it.
I was really struggling with how to find
maggie's graph
I was really lost when it came
to this graph. I had tried to solve it
by using y=x2 + 17x -42. when I
started I automatically started to get
very large amounts. I asked makai to
see if I was doing it right, he said no.
He showed me how to do the first
couple of ones and after told me to
try. I got them right after he had
showed me the right way.

This was one of the first things we

did with graphing. I had already an
idea about how to solve this
problem. The equation was y = x2 6x - 5. I knew that the first thing I
had to do was use -5 as the x in this
equation. I got x squared , multiplied
6 and -5 and once I got the final
number I plugged it into the
equation and my final answer was
x= 60 in my starting/end point of
the graph.

This is something similar from the

rest of my work. I basically used the
equation y = 3x squared. I started
with -3. I plugged -3 into the
equation and immediately got the
answer. The answer was 22. I kept
on going with the equation adding
-2, -1 , 0,....
My graph ended up looking like a
big U. I also found out that the
vertex is o,o and that 0,0 was the
symmetry as well. During this lesson
I learned exactly what symmetry
was by asking my table mates what
it was.

Narrative

This is another way of factoring

quadratics it is very simple the first
thing you do is
you multiply the x by the
x and the x again to the 8
next you multiply the 2x
by x and the 2x by 8 again.
You end up with 2 x squared - 8x -4x
16
that later turns into 2x squared - 12
x 16 because you add the 8x and 4
which equals to 12 x.

This document was actually

homework, but I didn't really
understand how to get the answers.
My friends helped me during free
time and explained to me how to get
it. I didn't understand why the 2 ( a
in section 2) was outside of the
parenthesis. They later on explained
to me why that was and now I know
it is because the 12, 10 , and 2 are
all common factors of 2 so we have
to add the 2 at the beginning of the
parenthesis.

This was one of my first times

factoring quadratics. I was very
confused, I had no idea what to do
or how to solve this equation. I
asked several people if they could
help me and none of them really
explained in a way I understood.
The last person I asked was sammy.
He made me understand how to
solve this equation. What he
basically told me was what two
numbers can you multiply that
would equal 9 (first problem) I said
3. He told me to draw two
parenthesis with 2 number threes in
the beginning. He then told me that
I had to add the variable, and since
there was a 1 leftover you would
write + 1 or - 1.

Timeline:
Tuesday 10/13
- You will gather the three pieces of evidence for graphing quadratics and the three
pieces of evidence for factoring quadratics that you will use for your portfolio.
- You will write a narrative to show your development through these different pieces
of work..
Wednesday 10/14
- You will continue to write your narrative for your pieces of work.
- You will start to determine how your analysis fits into the qualities of a
mathematician.
Thursday 10/15
- You will scan your documents (if you have not already done so)
- You will make sure that your portfolio is 100% ready to present.
Friday 10/16
- You will critique your portfolio with two partners in triads.
- You will use this critique and implement the feedback into your feedback
document for the year.
