Assignment # 2

Reliability Engineering
Instructor: Dr. Rajesh Karki
Problem 1:
A system has a continuous load requirement of 80 MW. Find the expected load loss and
the probability of load loss (loss of load probability) if the generation system is composed
of nine 10 MW units each with an unavailability (probability of failure) of 1.5%
Problem 2:
A pumping station has two 20,000 gal/hr pumps and is to have one 40,000 gal/hr pump
installed. Draw up a pumping capacity outage probability table for this system given that
the unavailabilities (probability of failure) for the 20,000 and 40,000 gal/hr pumps are 0.2
and 0.1 respectively. If the system requires at least 50,000 gal/hr for successful operation,
what is the probability of system success?
Problem 3:
A series system has identical components each having a reliability of 0.998. What is the
maximum number of components that can be allowed if the minimum system reliability
is to be 0.90?
Problem 4
A system consists of 5 components in parallel. System success requires that at least 3 of
these components must function. What is the probability of system success if the
component reliability in 0.9?
Problem 5
Derive a general expression for the unreliability of the system (i.e. probability of system
failure) whose reliability model is shown below. Calculate the system unreliability if the
unreliability of component 3 and 5 are 0.01, and for the other components are 0.02.

Problem 6
A water supply system consists of a pump system in series with a delivery system
(consisting of double pipes). The pump system has 4 possible operating levels, ranging
from zero to 100% of the system requirement as shown below. Similarly the water
delivery system has 3 possible operating levels as shown in the following table.
