The bridge will carry 4 lanes of traffic with 2 lanes for each direction. The bridge in topic will have a cast-in-place reinforced concrete deck carried by five steel girders. The bridge is a single span bridge with a length of 50 feet. The concrete slab will be 8.5 inches thick and the girder center to center spacing will be 8.5 feet. The reinforcement steel in the deck will have a yield strength of 60 ksi and the W shape sections will be made of A992 steel Grade 50.
This bridge design project paper will cover the deck design including the strength I state for positive and negative flexure for interior bays and the service I limit state positive and negative moment flexure cracking for interior bays. The strength I limit state is to ensure the enough strength is provided to resist the computed load effects the bridge component is expected to experience. The service limit state is taken as restrictions on stress, deformation and width of cracks under normal service conditions.
The parapet design is not included in this project. The student assumed the dimensions of the parapet when computing for the design dead loads. Also, the shear studs, elastomeric bearings, piers, abutments, wing walls and foundation designs are not covered in this project.
