Affidavit of Porfiry Petrovich, Detective, Head of the Investigation Department, St.

Petersburg Police Department:

My name is Porfiry Petrovich. I am the Head Officer of the Investigation Department and
am a detective with the St. Petersburg Police in Saint Petersburg Governorate. I have been a
police officer for 10 years and a detective for the past four years.
On 23 July, 1866, I met Mr. Raskolnikov in a party. Talking to many people, I then
initiated a conversation with him about his mental health. A police in my department shared
about how the defendant peculiarly fainted when he was summoned to our office and the murder
of Ivanovna sisters was discussed. When asked about it, Raskolnikov said the smell of the place
made him sick, as it was newly-painted.
I can hardly believe that it was only a mere coincidence. I have solved different cases
pertaining to this one and most of the time the guilt haunts the culprit. I want to follow my
instinct and I immediately raise my suspicion and it was a good thing that my instinct was
correct. The defendant is the killer, a psychopath who slaughtered two defenseless sisters.
