Shopping local isn't just about shopping

Kali Babich
Special contributor
For several years now, the nationwide campaigns Shop Local and Small
Business Saturdays have brought to
the forefront the need for shoppers to
spend their dollars at home with local
independent merchants rather than
resort to big name stores that have
made their way into many communities.
But for local merchants, the Christmas holiday season is more than their
retail harvest, the make-or-break time
that determines whether it was a good
year or not.
It is their opportunity to better connect with customers and show them
why shopping local is a better overall
experience for all.

Always supporting
each other

Susan Doughty, owner of the home

dcor gift shop 1419 Mercantile,
extends the loyalty customers offer
her and her store to support the community through her own service activities.
I think supporting local businesses is very important because local
people contribute a lot more to the
economy than just the tax dollar that
we collect. I donate regularly to charities, Doughty said, I go to silent auctions or anything that I can do. Supporting each other is what its all
about.
When customers buy from 1419 Mercantile, it is likely multiple local businesses will be being supported. One
can find custom-made silk florals,
candles, clock, art, and seasonal wood
signs around the store handmade
locally by people in Kansas.
In need of home decorations for the
holidays? 1419 Mercantile has a wide
variety of dcor from where to choose.
Its always a very busy time since
we have a lot of things for people to
decorate their homes, Doughty said,
We love it when people come in with a
tabletop or something that needs decorated.

Giving back to the

community

This will be the fourth year that

Britts Garden Acres will be making its
annual trip to Denver to hand pick
Christmas trees and bring them back
to sell. Third generation owner Angela Britt reflected on what the holiday
season means to her and her familys
business.
Its time to connect with the community, Britt said, We focus on the
community all throughout the year,
but its just another opportunity to
give our customers more local options
and see them another time before the
winter closes us up.
Were very humbled and grateful

to be able to do what we do in the Manhattan community, so being able to
have customers clear till Christmas
Eve is amazing.
Along with their variety of 75 Christmas trees, you can find locally-grown
kettle corn, granola, milk, eggs, grass
fed beef, raw honey, and more than 35
kinds of fruits and vegetables throughout the year at Britts Garden Acres.
Their most popular crops are strawberries, watermelon, sweet corn,
pumpkins, and tomatoes. This time of
year, according to Britt, their jams and
salsas make great winter gifts.

A growing community

There is no question Manhattan has

grown over the past 20 years, and Ted
Hartke, homegrown Manhattanite
and owner of the Gallery for Hair, has
loved to watch it happen.
Im a Manhattan kid. I grew up
here, lived my whole life in MHK. I
love the idea of shopping in Manhattan, Hartke said, I love the idea of
supporting local, homegrown businesses. I know theres things we cant
get in town, but for me, it takes quite a
bit for me to have to go out of town. You
gotta support the Little Apple. Thats
how I look at it.
Hartke believes there are many
perks to being a local business owner
in Manhattan, and he most definitely
does not take them for granted.
I think you can build a great network, Hartke said. You go to a local

business that networks you to another

business that will network you to
another one. Its a great way to find
people that are expert at what they do.
One thing is that it really does
ground you. By having a small business, it makes you really enjoy and
support your community.
The Gallery for Hair offers a long
list of services, including haircuts,
different forms of color, ombre (refers
to hair color fading from dark to light,
or vice versa), balayage (a freehand
technique in which swatches of hair
are sectioned and hand painted
against a backing board with a lightening agent), pedicures, manicures,
facials, massages, perming, and nail
art and techniques. Hartke believes in
customizing the experience for the
customer to what works best for them.
We like to customize whatever
works best for somebody, Hartke
said. We really enjoy doing a customized look and experience for people.

Shopping local produce

The holiday season at the Eastside

Market brings nothing but joy to owner
Terry Olson, who just celebrated her
40th year with the market.
Its fun to interact with people
when theyre trying to get the perfect
gifts for their loved ones, and we love
to help them do that, Olson said. Its
a chance for us to connect with our
customers and help them get their
Christmas shopping done.
The Eastside Market offers a variety of fun gifts for loved ones, including themed ornaments, assorted fruit
baskets, Kansas grown poinsettias,
Topsys popcorn, and Kansas gift
boxes.
According to Olson, the Kansas gift
boxes are great to send to loved ones
out of state. They fill every gift box
with local goodies like local honey and
Kansas summer sausage, but customers can also customize their box, making it personal for the person receiving the gift.
After being a part of the small business community in Manhattan for so
long, Olson feels she has been blessed
with the best.
As an employer, we get the cream
of the crop of people we get to employ
from across the state. Olson said. We
have a lot of longtime employees
some from the very beginning.
I feel very fortunate. Ive had a lifelong career that never felt like work,
Olson said, I dont know if I could put
it into words how lucky we have it here
in Manhattan. We dont have big city
traffic, but we have big city culture.

We are owned by the city of Manhattan. Most of us that work here are
Manhattanites. When you shop locally, you support the local community,
Cullers said, The taxes stay here. The
city government has been great about
looking after the citizens of our town.
From rocks and fossils to history
books on Manhattan and the Flint
Hills, the unique gift shop selection
lives up to the Discovery Centers mission to inspire people to celebrate,
explore, and care for the Flint Hills.
Even the apparel is specific to inspiring people about the Flint Hills, as you
can find shirts that read, Keep calm
and breathe in the Flint Hills.
The gift shop also supports local
artisans and Kansas artisans by selling their creations, including jewelry,
jams and jellies, and essential oils,
soaps, and lotions.
To Cullers, the gift shop is more
than just its items. Somebody could
just be buying a T-shirt, but its more
than that to care for the Flint Hills, to
care for the community. Its nice to be a
retailer that can do that.
To be able to have a store that has a
mission thats so important to preserve our history and culture of this
region, its an honor to be a part of
that, Cullers said.

Home away from home

Walking into Merle Norman feels

like stepping into a home away from
home, according to owner Brenda
Horton.
Its like walking into my home,
Horton said. Youre welcomed. Here
at Merle Norman its just a good experience.

Imagine a world without small business

NED
SEATON
NSEATON@THEMERCURY.COM
It sure is easy to click that one button on Amazon and have something
show up on your doorstep a couple
days later. It sure is nice to pay a few
pennies less, too.
But if you do that sort of shopping,
try to imagine something else: A vacant
downtown, everything a chain or franchise. No local owners, no local stores.
Because that could be coming. One
Manhattan businessman -- who advocates for small business at the national level -- even thinks its likely.
Within our lifetimes, said Jeff
Koenig, we will see Main Street, for
all intents and purposes, go away.
Koenig, who was an owner of Big
Poppis Bicycles in Manhattan, said he
and his partners sold out because they
could see the trends that endangered
their type of local store. He said they
either needed to buy up competitors to
scale up, or else sell near the top of the
market, before facing online and bigbox-store competition.
This is all driven, he said, by consumers who think almost entirely
about the short-term price of an item
that theyre shopping for. As business

owners and as employees, people

think about preserving local ownership, and good wages. But as consumers, many of us are lemmings who
chase a low price, which simultaneously hurts our own ability to get a
good job or support our own community.
So what happens if we all continue
to chase the lowest price, and continue to shop online rather than shop
locally?
Well, for one thing: Were likely to
see our own property taxes go up substantially. Sales taxes make up 40 percent of the city governments $30 million budget, according to city finance
director Bernie Hayen. If that goes
away, property taxes will have to rise
to cover the gap.
For another: The local economy
would droop. Local ownership of business means profits stay local, rather
than being shipped off to corporate
headquarters. Local businesses pay
property tax, too. All of which is why
experts say dollars earned by local
business circulate several more times
over than dollars earned by chain
stores. Online purchases hardly benefit the local economy at all.
So how to get out of this?
Its all well and good to nag consumers to shop closer to home, wagging a
metaphorical finger at people to eat
their spinach rather than their burger
and fries. But thats not a winning
strategy, says Koenig.

Manhattan Running Co., 1129 Garden Way, has the right footwear and more for any
runner.
Consumers need to be educated
that, over the long haul, they are far
better off financially if they buy the
best value, rather than simply the lowest-price item. Local businesses often
provide better quality and far better
service, and therefore over time lower
the cost of ownership of lots of things.
He said we need to educate people
about that reality.
Thats a start. From there, Koenig

said there are policy changes at the

state and federal level that need to be
made.
The National League of Cities estimates that online sales meant that
about $279 million in sales taxes went
uncollected in Kansas in 2012. Manhattan city finance director Bernie
Hayen has estimated that Manhattan
missed out on $721,000 in sales taxes
that year. That kind of revenue would
have provided enough money to make
the recent sales-tax increase for road
maintenance less necessary, or could
have either lowered other taxes or
supported other government services.
But of course Manhattan consumers kept that money, rather than paying it in sales tax, so one could argue
that it stayed local anyway. The scenario worth pondering, though, is
what happens if online sales keep
growing, and locally owned, bricksand-mortar stores decline in proportion.
Trent Armbrust of the Manhattan
Chamber of Commerce puts it this
way: Just look at the t-shirts of local
charity events, or the names on the
fields or courts at Manhattan High.
The sponsors of events that benefit the
community are almost always locally
owned businesses, and without them,
the kind of community we want would
be diminished.
So keep in mind that shopping local
helps yourself and your community,
both Armbrust and Koenig say. Over
the long haul, it provides you more
value for your money, meaning you
end up better off -- and the community
ends up with better support and a better quality of life.

How to manage
holiday shopping
trips with tots in tow
Holiday shopping has changed considerably since the dawn of the Information Age. Whereas holiday shopping once required
shoppers to spend
hours perusing
stores at the local
mall, nowadays
many shoppers
get the bulk of
their shopping
done online.
S h o p p i n g
online may be convenient, but more
traditional holiday shopping still
affords shoppers
the chance to find great
deals, especially at the last minute.
Parents may prefer to leave the kids at
home when holiday shopping, but
sometimes they dont have a choice.
Fortunately, there are ways to manage
holiday shopping trips with kids in
tow.
Encourage kids to create shopping lists. Keeping kids engaged on
holiday shopping trips can be difficult, especially when shopping at
stores that tend to draw crowds and
long lines. But parents can engage
youngsters by encouraging them to
create their own holiday shopping
lists for family members and then
helping them find those gifts at the
mall or wherever they plan to do their
holiday shopping. Let kids bring their
lists along and check off gifts as they
purchase them.
Let kids do their own shopping. In
addition to creating lists, let kids do
their own shopping, including paying
for gifts they purchase for loved ones.
Kids might be more interested when
holiday shopping if theyre allowed to

peruse stores for potential gifts and

then purchase gifts with their own
money.
Break up shopping
excursions with a
meal. Kids enjoy
dining out, even if
their preferences
lean more toward
chicken fingers
than steak au
poivre. By breaking up shopping
excursions with
meals out on the
town, parents can
give kids something to look forward to at the onset of
the shopping day. Such a break also
gives everyone, moms and dads included, a chance to get off their feet and
catch their breath. When the meal is
over, promise kids a trip to get some ice
cream or hot chocolate at the end of
the day so they once again have something to look forward to.
Schedule some fun time. While
parents pressed for time might not
have much time to do anything but
shop, kids are likely to grow impatient
if the day does not include at least one
fun distraction. Look for malls or
shopping centers that feature fun
things for kids to do, such as carousel
rides or visits with Santa Claus. While
this might require parents to spend
more time at the mall or shopping center than they initially hoped, it can
help keep kids engaged while giving
them something fun to do at the same
time.
Parents who must take their kids
along on holiday shopping excursions
can take steps to make such trips fun
for all involved.

'Tis the season

to shop local
On a yearly basis, Manhattan welcomes nearly 400,000 visitors to The
Little Apple. Visitors come to Manhattan to shop, dine, relax and re-charge
in our community.
As we prepare for the holidays,
Manhattan is indeed a destination
Santa visits to complete his list. Santa
isnt the only one who loves The Little
Apple, as visitors plan visits between 6
11 times, complete with shopping
lists and dining in mind. Our unique
shops across the city range from home
dcor to boutique dress shops, art galleries to floral shops which provide
Santa and the visitor plenty to choose
from.
Purple? Did you say Purple? Plenty
of options here as well! Santa loves to
find that perfect Wildcat gift as he
checks out all of our shopping venues
across town from Manhattan Town
Center to Westloop to Seth Childs
Common, as well as Kansas oldest
shopping district of its kind, Aggieville!
Santa never tires of reviewing his
list to see who is naughty or nice; of
course, a great glass of cold milk and a
plate of homemade cookies provide

him with enough energy to do his task.

Just like Santa, our visitors have plenty of dining options to choose from
with over 60 unique dining venues and
a plethora of great chain restaurant
offerings just waiting to tempt hungry
ones. Manhattan is home to Tallgrass
Brewery which distributes locally
brewed Tallgrass beer to 17 states!
Visitors and Santa alike get recharged
with great bakery treats, local coffee
shops as well as chocolate offerings,
all which help to fill the stockings for
Santa and visitors alike!
As Santa needs to rest, Manhattan
has ideal lodging venues just perfect
for that long winter snooze. Manhattans hotel offerings are shiny and
bright with over 50% of our hotel inventory built since 2000. Lodging is located all across town, close to shopping,
dining, movies, or loved ones!
On average, visitors to Manhattan
spend $311 per day during their visit.
And Santa? We are positive he spends
just a bit more! During this holiday
season we anticipate spending, as
well as Santas reindeer to be on the
rise. The Manhattan Convention &
Visitors Bureau encourages everyone
to be like Santa shop local! Shopping
local allows our local business to grow
which makes Manhattan the destination spot for Santa as well as visitors to
enjoy! Be like Santa shop local!

Shopping local isn't just about shopping

No. 1, from Page 1
Being a local business is very rewarding. I
get a lot of feedback from
the community. Im very
thankful for all the clients and customers that
we have.
With the holidays
being the busiest season
of the year at Merle Norman, Horton hosts a
three-day holiday open
house. Refreshments,
deals, and complimentary eyebrow waxes
are the salons way to
give back and say thank
you.
Horton shows her
appreciation for the
local community by
donating to charities
and organizations such
as the Boys and Girls
Club.
Its all a big circle of
family love, Horton
said.

Merle Norman, located at 820 Commons Pl., is

a full service salon,
which includes doing
cosmetics for weddings
and everyday makeup
for professional photo-shoots. Horton calls
her salon a one stop
lady shop.

Finding unique
products

Customers will most

likely find unique, high
quality products when
shopping at the Energy
Center, according to
owner Kimberly Webber.
We try to bring in
products that people
arent going to find
everyone else, Webber
said. People come in
because of the unique
products we bring in. We

try to get the best kind of

quality.
The Energy Centers
quality inventory
includes but is not limited to: stoves and fireplaces, swimming pools,
spas, home dcor, grills,
and a 7,000 square foot
retail shopping area. On
top of that, they service
and install everything
they sell.
Owning a business for
16 years with her husband in Manhattan
comes with great
reward, according to
Webber.
Theres a sense of
pride, the fact that weve
been around so long,
Webber said. With the
number of compliments
we get from people we
see on a regular basis,
you do things with more
pride and energy. Its a
good feeling being a
local business.

Right after Thanksgiving, an enormous red

The holidays are my

Danenberg believes
it is the people that make

Manhattan is a

Danenberg said, The

The jewelry store,
located in the heart of
downtown Manhattan at

For Ralph Diaz, owning the Winged Lion is

about more than just
making a profit. Its
about supporting other

local businesses by recognizing and enhancing

each others differences.
Thats one thing I
love about Manhattan:
we all share people,
Diaz said. If someone
else is doing a lot of that,
we try to enhance each
other. I think all of us feel
that way downtown. If I
dont have it, I kind of
feel like Im Santa Claus
on Miracle on 34th
Street, cause Im always
telling people where to
go. Were all different,
and we try to keep it that
way.
Diaz stressed how
important it is for people
to shop local in Manhattan, and how the support

from the community

means so much.
Being a small business is tough. Kansas
City and Wichita are so
close, Diaz said. Manhattan is finally getting a
nice array of wonderful
restaurants, likewise
with the stores.
We try to offer a touch
of the big city in our
small town. It benefits us
in keeping us strong so
we can remain here.
At the Winged Lion,
located at 300 Poyntz

gifts, bath and body

Vintage Round-Up has many different

Small Business Saturday provides the basic motivation for consumers to shop at locally-owned
businesses on Nov. 26. But
SBS is about more than a
single day. Its about creating repeatable
behaviors that are
positive for the city of
Manhattan, and the
Manhattan economy.
Ongoing
efforts
emphasize
the
small-business owner as
a vital piece of a larger
puzzle, one that comes together when you patronize local retailers.
Local businesses return three
times more to the local economy
than major retail chains. Out of
every $100 spent at a local retailer,
$68 returns directly to the Manhattan community and economy. Your
money stays right here in the form
of employee payroll, charitable
donations and taxes. Schools benefit from the higher percentage of
local income, which boosts overall
education perceptions.
Visitors flock to areas where
local eateries have a thriving customer base, grounded in local

patrons.
Statistical data from the Small
Business Administration shows
more proof of aiding a robust economy, as two-thirds of all net new
jobs nationally are created by
small business, and that proves to
be a great measuring stick for
Manhattan. Here, 90 percent of Manhattan Area
Chamber of Commerce
members are small
business operations.
Ninety percent.
You the consumer
may interact with a
business owner at soccer practice or on the
playground, and that relationship further cements the
concept of building a familial business base in Manhattan. More
nuanced benefits include saving
travel costs from going to retailers
in larger metropolitan areas. Buy
local campaigns have proven
return on investment, with double
the revenue stream of independent business.
Shopping local simply makes
good consumer sense, and bolsters
your neighborhood in quantifiable
terms. Shop, dine and repair costs
doled out to local business simply
makes good fiscal sense for the
community of Manhattan, and in
your life.

First Gift of Christmas Sleigh Bell Gift Set

Hours: Mon.-Fri. 11am-6:30pm Sat. 11am-6pm

Locally owned for 26 years

Films contribute to
holiday traditions and
inspire great gifts
Tradition plays a pivotal role during the holiday season. While each
family has its own
unique holiday traditions, certain traditions
are embraced and
shared by families far
and wide.
The tradition of
watching holiday films
together as a family is
one custom that has
endured for generations. Grandparents
may have their favorite
films, while moms and
dads no doubt have their
own must-see holiday
movies as well. And no
holiday film session is
complete without
including at least one
movie that celebrates
the magical impact that
this time of year can
have on youngsters. This
year, holiday shoppers
can even draw some
gift-giving inspiration
from some classic holiday films that appeal to
family members of all
ages.

The Polar Express

(2004)

Children love this

tale of a young boy who
lives out many kids holiday fantasies by embarking on a magical, unpredictable journey to the
North Pole. Along the
way, the boy becomes a
true believer in the spirit of Christmas when he
picks up a loose sleigh
bell that falls off of Santas sleigh. Santa ultimately entrusts the bell
to the boy, referring to
the bell as the first gift
of Christmas.
Parents who want to
make the tradition of
watching holiday films
together with their children even more special
for kids can give the
First Gift of Christmas
Sleigh Bell Gift Set

shop/LilyDeal), providing their youngsters
with the same sense of
magic and wonderment
the boy feels when Santa
gives him the sleigh bell
in the film. The set
includes a large sleigh
bell, a red- and snow
white-striped gift box,
forest green ribbon, and
large bow. A leather
strap connected to each
bell allows kids to hang
the bell to include as
part of their home holiday decor, or kids can
carry the bell with them
during the holiday season and show it off to
friends and family alike.
Each bell comes in a velvet gift bag, making the
set an ideal memento for
shoppers who want to
give kids something they
can unwrap and enjoy
each Christmas for years
to come. In addition,
each bell comes with a
Certificate of Authenticity that is signed by
Santa and lists the name
of the elf who inspected
the bell, the reindeer
name and the location of
the bell on the reindeers harness.
Shoppers looking for
stocking stuffers for
young fans of the film
can opt for the Polar
Express Round Trip
Train Ticket. At 8 by 3,
the ticket fits easily into
standard Christmas
stockings and can be
customized to say
BELIEVE or any word
up to eight letters.

Grandparents are no

this beloved holiday

what life would have
