MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen.

But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the
last years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.
Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic
excellence and continuous improvement.
I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are
supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning
and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting
the needs of all students.
It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to
achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look
forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.
The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking
forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in
this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers
are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play
the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.
The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive
challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic
needs of our students.
I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the
opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.
Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on
this path.
My best wishes to all.

HISTORICAL ARTICLE

Wilhelm Wundt
Wilhelm Wundt was a German physiologist and psychologist,
who is widely credited as the founder of experimental psychology.
Wundt is also acknowledged as one of the greatest and most
influential psychologists of all time.
Early Life and Education:
Born at Neckarau, Baden in 1832, Wilhelm Wundt was the son of a
Lutheran minister. Wundt received a medical degree at the
University of Heidelberg in 1856. He also attended the Universities
of Tbingen and Berlin.
Contributions and Achievements:
After teaching physiology at the University of Heidelberg,
Wilhelm Wundt joined Hermann von Helmholtz as an assistant in
1858. During this time, he wrote Beitrge zur Theorie der
Sinneswahrnehmung (Contributions to the Theory of Sense
Perception). As one of the early pioneers of scientific psychology,
Wundt introduced the usage of experimental methods in
psychology, therefore minimizing the role of rational analysis.
After succeeding Helmholtz, he investigated the immediate
experiences of consciousness, such as sensations, ideas and
feelings, and wrote Grundzge der physiologischen Psychologie
(Principles of Physiological Psychology), which still remains one of
the most influential works in the history of psychology. It also
explored the fundamental concepts related to apperception
(conscious perception) and introspection (conscious examination
of conscious experience).

During his tenure as professor at the University of Leipzig in 1879,

Wundt built the first psychological laboratory ever. He also
published the first journal of psychology, Philosophische Studien
(Philosophical Studies) in 1881. Some of his later works also
included
Grundriss
der
Psychologie
(1896)
and
Vlkerpsychologie (190020).
Later Life and Death:
Wilhelm Wundt died on August 31, 1920 in Grossbothen,
Germany. He was 88 years old.

NEWS UPDATE

National Youth Day:

National Youth Day is celebrated in India on 12 January on the

birthday of Swami Vivekananda. In 1984 the Government of India
declared the day as the National Youth Day and since 1985 the
event is celebrated in India every year.
In 1984, the Government of India declared and decided to observe
the birthday of Swami Vivekanand (12 January, according to the
English calendar) as a National Youth Day every year from 1985
onwards. To quote from the Government of India's
communication, 'it was felt that the philosophy of Swamiji and the
ideals for which he lived and worked could be a great source of
inspiration for the Indian Youth.'[2]
On 12 January 2013, Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh told in his address at the inauguration of four-year-long
celebrations of Swami Vivekananda's 150th birth anniversary [3]
What Gandhiji said captures the great importance of spreading
Swami Vivekananda's ideas and ideals among the youth in our
country today. He personified the eternal energy 1of the youth and
their restless quest for truth. It is entirely fitting that the
Government of India has declared 12th January, the birthday of
Swami Vivekananda, as National Youth Day. We must work to
rekindle the eternal message of this great patriot and son of India.

Scientists reprogram embryonic stem cells to

expand their potential cell fates: (13th January,
2017)

Pluripotent stem cells can develop into most tissues of the

organism, but they cannot develop into extra-embryonic tissue -the placenta or yolk sac, for example --- like the one-celled
fertilized egg or two-celled zygote. Researchers found that by
blocking a specific microRNA, pluripotent stem cells can regain
the ability to become extra-embryonic tissue, providing a way to
expand the developmental potential of iPC cells with implications
for regenerative medicine and stem cell-based therapies.

Cleverly designed tuberculosis vaccine

promise in mice: (13th January, 2017)

shows

A clever new tuberculosis vaccine has shown promise in trials in

mice. If it succeeds, it will be the first new TB vaccine in a century.
With the rise of multidrug resistant tuberculosis, the difficulty of
curing the disease, and the large annual death toll, a successful
vaccine could be a huge benefit to public health -- especially in
low- and middle income countries.

findings
carcinogenic silicate: (13th January, 2017)

on

The mineral erionite is considered to be highly carcinogenic. Up to

now it has been thought that iron as a constituent element of the
mineral erionite is the reason for the carcinogenic effect. However,
mineralogists have discovered that this metal does not even appear
in the crystal structure of erionite.

Targeted therapy for sleep disorders helps

patients with muscular dystrophy: (13th January,
2017)
Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is the most common adult
muscular dystrophy, and many patients with DM1 suffer from
various sleep and respiratory disorders. In a new study, researchers
found that because there is wide range of sleep problems,

FDA Issues Revised Draft Guidance for Control

of Listeria monocytogenes in Ready-To-Eat
Foods
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is releasing an
updated draft guidance, Control of Listeria monocytogenesin ReadyTo-Eat Foods, which supports ongoing efforts by industry and
government agencies to reduce the risk of Listeria monocytogenes (L.
mono) in ready-to-eat (RTE) foods. L. mono, a pathogen that can
grow even in cold, refrigerated environments, is particularly
harmful to the elderly, pregnant women and/or their pregnancy,
and those who are immunocompromised.
The emphasis on prevention in this draft guidance is consistent
with the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and reflects
the FDAs current good manufacturing practice (CGMP)
requirements, as well as new requirements for hazard analysis and
risk-based preventive controls, including verification of preventive
controls.
All food facilities that manufacture, process, pack, or hold RTE
foods will benefit from clear guidance on measures to control L.
mono in the food processing environment, regardless of whether
the facility is subject to CGMPs, preventive controls, or both
CGMPs and preventive controls.
Industry best practices and the seek and destroy approach used
by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) have been incorporated into
the draft guidance. Integrating these approaches along with the
food safety requirements under FSMA, should lead to more
effective efforts to control L. mono in RTE products. RTE facilities
that produce foods that are regulated by both USDA/FSIS and

FDA will also benefit from a uniform federal approach to reducing

the risk of environmental contamination with L. mono.
The guidance includes recommendations for controls involving
personnel, cleaning and maintenance of equipment, and sanitation,
as well as for treatments that kill L. mono and formulations to
prevent it from growing during storage of the food between
production and consumption. The updated draft guidance does
not change or alter what constitutes an RTE food.
