    Abstract
    Withthepublicsgrowinginterestinskinwhitening,lighteningingredientsonlyusedunder
    dermatologicalsupervisionuntilrecently,aremoreandmorefrequentlyincorporatedinto
    cosmeticformulas.Theactiveagentsthatlightenskintoneareeithernaturalorsynthetic
    substances,andmayactatvariouslevelsofmelanogenesis.Theyareusedtotreat
    variousskinpigmentationdisordersorsimplytoobtainalighterskintoneaswhiterskin
    maybesynonymousofwealth,health,youth,and/orbeautyindifferentcultures.However,
    recentstudiesdemonstratedtheadverseeffectsofsomeoftheseingredients,leadingto
    theirinterdictionorrestricteduseundertheEuropeanDirectiveandseveralother
    internationalregulations.Afteranoverviewofskinwhiteningpracticesandtheassociated
    risks,thisarticleprovidesinsightintothemechanismsinvolvedinmelaninsynthesisand
    thebiologicalassaysavailabletoattestthelighteningactivityofindividualingredients.The
    legislationdealingwiththeuseofskinlightenersisthendiscussed.Astraditional
    depigmentingagentssuchashydroquinoneandcorticosteroidsareofsafetyconcern,the
    potentialofnaturalextractshasbeeninvestigatedmoreandmorefinally,asynthesisof
    threeyearsofresearchinourlaboratoryforsuchplantextractswillbegiven.ViewFull
