Name:
On Time/Late: (-)3 points per class session
Your Essay must be typed, and double-spaced
Your Essay must be a minimum of 4 Paragraphs in length, with the maximum # of Paragraphs allowed being 6
1st Paragraph: The first 2 or 3 sentences of your Essay must include a statement of the articles main theme and a quick
summary of the articles main points. In the second half of this paragraph you must identify and discuss what you learned
from this article. This must be done in the 1st Person. Example: What I learned, in particular, from this article was ....
Body: This must contain a minimum of 2 paragraphs, and a maximum of 3. Each paragraph should focus on one of the
main points or themes of the article. Ideally, you have identified these points or themes in the 1st Paragraph (see above).
Iin each paragraph, you should develop one of these points or themes more fully, by explaining what the article says about
it and - if you like - your reaction to it. So: 2 paragraphs means 2 points or themes developed & discussed.
Final Paragraph: In this paragraph you must wrap up your Essay in a coherent way. You may begin by summarizing the
key points you learned from the article. But the most important part of your Final Paragraph is your discussion of what
you do not know or understand about the topic(s) discussed in the article. To be specific, in the second part of this
paragraph you must do 2 specific things:
(1): You must identify 1 or 2 key points about the articles topic(s) that, even if they were discussed in the article, you are
(a) still confused about or (b) you feel you need to learn more about in order to understand the articles topic better. Do
this in the first person (Ior me). Example 1: After reading this article, what I remain confused about is....;
Example 2: After reading this article, what I would like to learn more about is.... Be specific.
(2): The last (final) sentence of your Essay MUST be a QUESTION. Building upon your discussion of what still
confuses you, or of what you feel you need to learn more about, to create a question about the articles topic that you
would like to have answered for you. *Do not create a question that you would like me to answer for you. (I wont.)
*Do not create a question that doesnt really require a specific answer, or that cant be answered at all.
You can use no more than 1 (ONE) direct quote from the article in each Essay. You may, of course, use standard
economics language freely, without citation or quotation marks.
