OSTEOPOROSIS

BEE, NOEY, BANK, CREAM GROUP 2

Who It Affect?
All men and women have some risk of developing
'thinning' of the bones (osteoporosis) as they become
older, particularly over the age of 60

Peak bone mass happens when you have

the most bone you will ever have, usually in
your early to mid-30s.

At a certain age, the bone remodeling process

changes. New bone comes in at
a
slower rate. This slowdown leads to a drop in
the amount of bone you have.

When bone loss becomes more severe, you

have osteoporosis.

CAUSE OF OSTEOPOROSIS

Estrogen deficiency

Testosterone deficiency

Testosterone are converted into estrogen in men

Lack of calcium

Estrogen promotes activity of osteoblast

Low estrogen = Osteoblast cant work as efficiently as it was before
Estrogen preserves bone density

Calcium is used to build strong bone

Lack of Vitamin D

Vitamin D can slow down bone loss

Vitamin D is required in Calcium absorption

CAUSE OF OSTEOPOROSIS

High thyroid hormone

Too much alcohol intake

Thyroid hormone affects the rate of bone replacement

Too much thyroid will speed up the rate of bone resorption
Alcohol interfere the process of calcium and vitamin D
Alcohol decrease estrogen level

Smoking

Diagnosis - Bone mineral density test

Measure how much calcium and other type of minerals

are there in the bone area
Can be done by using DEXA scan

SYMPTOMS

Back pain, caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra.

A bone fracture that occurs much more easily than expected.
Loss of height over time.
Loss of self-esteem.
Depression.
A stooped posture.

PREVENTION
Women are more susceptible to osteoporosis than men, probably because of
hormonal influence on bone growth and calcification.
1)

2)
3)

Since osteoporosis happens mainly because of loss of nutrients, dietary intake of calcium,
protein, phosphorus, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin K, magnesium, zinc and copper will help
prevent osteoporosis.
Regular physical activities, especially weight bearing exercises will increase bone strength
and will help prevent osteoporosis
Also, smoking and alcohol consumption will have negative effects on bone density, avoiding
them will also prevent osteoporosis
