Lab 1
Procedure:
1. _ _ Report to your assigned PC for this activity.
2. Answer the following question: Is the assigned PC a desktop model or a tower? Its a
desktop model.
3. Note if the following components are in your computer.
_ _ Floppy Disk Drive
_ _ CD Drive
_ _ DVD Drive
4. Look at the back of the case and identify the types of port access for the computer. You
may use the following figure to help you identify common ports.
5.

6. __ __Observe your instructor closely as to the proper procedure for removing the
computer case closure. There are many different variations of case styles, and it can be
very difficult to properly remove a computer case enclosure. You may inadvertently
damage the case if you apply force or remove an enclosure improperly.
7. After removing the case enclosure, identify the power supply location. The power supply
is very obvious. Look at the exterior power cord connection coming from the 120 volt
wall outlet. It will connect directly to the power supply unit. You will also see a bundle of
various coloured wires and power connectors leading to various components inside the
computer case. Answer the following questions:

-Does the power supply have a cooling fan? _Yes_

-If yes, where is it located? It is located in the corner of the PC and is attached to
the power supply
-Approximately how many connectors are associated with the power supply unit?
There are 7.
8. Look at the power supply for information such as the voltage and wattage of the unit.
Record the wattage rating of the power supply unit. 300 watts.
9. __ __ Identify the CPU unit. It should be mounted directly on the motherboard with a
heat sink and a fan assembly mounted on top.
10. __ __ Look for the RAM modules and their location in the corresponding slots. For
example, if there are four RAM slots and only two are filled, which two are filled?
11. Identify the main motherboard and the type of expansion slots located on the board.
Many times the expansion slot is identified by placing its name or acronym at the slot
location like that shown in the following illustration.
12. There is no Floppy Disk Drive installed on the PC.
13. Identify the hard disk drive. Determine if it is connected to an IDE-type of
connector on the motherboard or a SATA-type. Again, these types of connectors usually
have an ID printed on the motherboard beside the connection. Look for the letters SATA
and IDE, and then answer the following questions:
-Does the hard disk drive use a flat ribbon type of cable? Yes, it uses a flat SATA
cable to connect to the hard disk drive.
-If so, does the cable have a red of blue stripe along one edge?
-Do you see a power cable from the power supply to the hard disk drive? Yes, I
see a power cable from the power supply to the hard disk drive.
-How many wires are used for the power cable?
14. Look at the various chips mounted on the motherboard. Are they soldiered in place,
or are they inserted into sockets?
15. Locate the CMOS battery. Look for a circular silver disk approximately 1 in
diameter. The battery normally has the voltage labelled on it or a positive plus sign like
that shown in the following illustration. Look at the BAT1 printed on the motherboard
below the battery location.
16. Lastly, it is often necessary to make a sketch of the PC components layout. The
sketch is used as a guide for reassembly after certain PC components have been
disassembles. For example, if you must replace the motherboard every wire connection
point should be identified. Make a sketch of the PC layout in the space provided. It
should look similar to that in the following figure. The one in the example is very small,
and the labelling is very limited. Make yours larger. Use a separate sheet of paper if

needed. Be sure to identify the fan, LED, and switch connections. Draw the sketch with
as much detail as reasonably possible, as it will help during reassembly. Pay particular
attention to how the flat ribbon connects to devices. Be sure to draw the orientation of the
coloured stripe along the cable in respect to the connection points.
