1. General
This user manual describes details of testing Siemens 7SJ86 relay with the OMICRON
Protection Test Template. General information on the usage of OMICRON Protection Testing Library
items can be found in the OMICRON PTL user manual.

The template has been tested with the following relay:

Manufacturer: Siemens
Model: 7SJ86
Firmware Version: 7.00

2. Software and Hardware Requirements

To use this template, you must have a valid test license for the OMICRON Test Universe 3.00 software or
higher versions and the following test modules:
 Control Center
 Quick CMC
 Overcurrent
 State Sequencer

Any CMC test set can be used with this Protection Test Template.

3. Hardware
There are multiple possibilities of wiring Siemens 7SJ86 relay to a CMC test set. The advised
connections are shown in Figure 1. These connections are the default settings in the
Hardware Configuration of the PTT.

4. Functional Range
Supported functions:
 Overcurrent protection, phases
 Overcurrent protection, ground
 Directional time-overcurrent protection, phases
 Ground-Fault Protection for High-Resistance Ground Faults in Grounded Systems
 Switch On To Fault SOTF protection (with Overcurrent protection)

Not supported settings or functionalities of the supported functions above:

 Only one inverse time stage is supported for each overcurrent function and at least two definite
time stages with it.
 Dynamic settings for any overcurrent stage are not supported.
 Directional behavior for 67N is not supported in case the polarization parameter polarization with
is set to one of the following values:
o IY (neutral pt.) only
o zero-sequence Power
 If a residual current transformer is connected to the relay, the setting 3I0 calculated for the
parameter Measured value of the ground overcurrent function (50N/51N) is not supported.
 Inverse time stages are not supported for the SOTF function.

 Synchrocheck, synchronizing function (25)
 Voltage protection (27), (59)

 Power protection active/reactive power

 Thermal overload (49)
 Circuit breaker failure protection (50BF)
 Automatic reclosing (79)
 Frequency protection (81 O/U)
 Fault locator

Although the functions listed above are not supported by the Protection Test Template, the
Relay Parameter Section of the XRIO Converter includes all protection parameters of the relay.

5. XRIO Converter
The Test Object contains 7SJ86 XRIO Converter, which includes setting parameters of the modeled
protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the Digsi5 V7.00 software.
