3 Using the XRIO Converter

The Siemens 7SD610 XRIO Converter can be used as a stand-alone converter or in association with a
relay specific test template, for example with the OMICRON Line Differential Protection template for the
7SD610 relays.
In any way the XRIO Converter is used, follow the quick start instructions and create your test using
LinkToXRIO or start using the relay specific test template (for more information, see the test template
documentation).

4 Required Software Version

To use this XRIO Converter, you must have a valid license for the OMICRON Test Universe 2.30 or
higher software.

5 Functional Range
The Siemens 7UM62 XRIO Converter implements the following functions:
• 87 Line Differential protection (see the note below)
• 50/51 Definite Time and Timed Overcurrent protection

Note: If you want to use the 7SD610 XRIO Converter for testing similar relays such as the 7SD610 relays
for protection of two terminals lines, ensure that the terminal count in the Additional Parameters section
of the XRIO Converter is set to 2.

Figure 5.1: Functional range of the Siemens 7UM62x XRIO Converter

Some of the functions use the RIO interface of the Test Universe software. Consequently, the test
modules are configured automatically without using LinkToXRIO. The following functions use the RIO
interface:

9 XRIO Converter Structure

The XRIO Converter is divided into two sections: the 7SD610 section and the RIO section. Both sections
consist of several function blocks.

9.1 7SD610
The 7SD610 section is sub-divided into four groups: the Relay Parameter Section, the Additional
Information section, the RIOplus section and the Template Controller section.

9.1.1 Relay Parameter Section

This section includes the parameters which have to be changed by the user. All relay parameters are
included in this section and have to be set to the actual relay values. The parameters are grouped and
named as in the DIGSI software 4.81 / 4.82. Each parameter in this block can be identified by a parameter
Foreign ID, which is identical to the parameter ID in the DIGSI software.

Figure 9.1: Relay Parameter Section

9.1.2 Additional Information

On the one hand this block contains additional test parameters as tolerances or angles of the direction
elements, which have not to be changed by the user. Furthermore this block contains test parameters,
which are not found in the relay. These parameters have to be changed by the user. Please insert the
required power system and test data under the following sections:
• Additional Information: Parameter Diff Test mode (see figure 9.2)
• General
• Line Data
• Circuit Breaker Data
• Relay Parameter Section (Remote Relay)

Figure 9.2: Additional Information

The block General includes detailed information needed for the test report like manufacturer, device type,
substation name etc. These parameters are linked to the NamePlate block in RIOplus and from there to
the Device block in RIO. Thus these parameters are available in the protocol report of the Test Universe
software. This section includes parameters which have to be changed by the user.

The block Relay Information contains relay specific parameters such as tolerances or angles of
directional elements which cannot be set by the user, because they are constant values. All values set in
this block can be found in the chapter "Technical Data" of the relay's documentation. Typically, this block
does not have to be changed.

The block Line Data includes additional line information needed for testing the relay protection function
with OMICRON Test Universe software, e.g. line length unit. This section includes parameters which have
to be changed by the user.

The block Circuit Breaker Information includes information which is required for the CB test. This
section includes parameters which have to be changed by the user.

The block Test Tolerance includes an additional test tolerance to calculate the start and end value for trip
and pick-up tests by using the OMICRON TU Ramping or State Sequencer module. Typically, this block
does not have to be changed.

The block Relay Parameter Section (Remote Relay) includes the necessary information needed from
the remote side to execute the end to end test for the line differential function successfully. This section
includes parameters which have to be set prior to testing.

9.1.3 RIOplus (Advanced view)

The RIOplus block acts as an interface between the relay and system data and the test modules. The
block is needed for the RIO parameter conversion or to link the RIOplus parameters directly to the test
modules (e.g. State Sequencer or Ramping). The RIOplus section is divided into different sub-blocks,
which include either relay information or modeling of a certain protection function. The sub-blocks for
these protection functions include all the data needed for testing the respective function.

9.1.4 Template Controller (Advanced view)

The Template Controller block contains special test data, which cannot be mapped in the standardized
RIOplus section, like e.g. the activation flags for Pause Modules. This block can be increased by the user
with new customized blocks and parameters for testing functions that are not included in the OMICRON
Siemens 7SD610 XRIO Converter.

9.2 RIO
The RIO section of the XRIO Converter contains all specialized RIO functions needed to use the more
specialized test modules (like Advanced Differential or Overcurrent) provided by the OMICRON Test
Universe software.

Warning:
• Do not change any value in this section. The values have been set using the relay settings of the
Relay Parameter Section.
• Do not activate the former test object view in the advanced mode of the XRIO test object.
Changing parameters in this view could disable formulas in the RIO section.

9.2.1 Device
The RIO Device block contains general data for the characterizations of the protected object and relay
e.g. manufacturer or substation name. Furthermore the block contains the information about the current
and voltage transformers and the maximum values and limits for the CMC output currents and voltages.

9.2.2 Line Differential

The RIO Differential function provides the necessary values for testing the line differential protection
function of the 7SD610 relay. The RIO Differential function contains all values needed for using the
following OMICRON Test Universe modules:
• Diff Configuration
• Diff Characteristic
• Diff Trip Time
• Diff Harmonic Restraint

9.2.3 Distance
The Distance function provides the current transformer starpoint. the connection side of the current
transformer defines the direction of the test currents for the OMICRON TU test modules QuickCMC,
Ramping, State Sequencer and for the Advanced modules.

9.2.4 Overcurrent
The RIO Overcurrent function contains the overcurrent characteristics for the phase-phase and phase-
ground faults. This block is filled with the corresponding test values.

Note: There can be only one active timed overcurrent (IDMT) stage at a time which must have the
smallest pickup value of all active overcurrent stages.

9.2.5 Overcurrent STUB

The RIO Overcurrent function contains the overcurrent characteristics for the phase-phase and phase-
ground faults of the overcurrent STUB element. This block is filled with the corresponding test values.

9.3 Activating the RIO functions

The RIO functions have to be set to active manually in each e.g. Overcurrent test module if the XRIO
Converter is used in the stand-alone mode. Activate the RIO function you intend to use in the local
hardware configuration as shown below.

Figure 9.3: Activating a RIO function

9.4 Handling the "∞" Value

Values that can be deactivated in the DIGSI software with the setting input "∞" can be disabled in the
XRIO Converter, too. Therefore the blocked values in the XRIO Converter have to be set to +inf.
