6 Not Supported Functions

The following functions are currently not supported:
• Setting the group change options
• Oscillographic fault records
• Intermittent ground fault protection
• Circuit breaker wear monitoring
• Trip circuit supervision
• External temperature input

Some functions are modeled in the custom section of the converter. These functions include:
• Cold load pickup
• 2nd Harmonic inrush restraint
• Startup supervision of motors
• Startup counter for motors
• Under/Overvoltage
• Over/Underfrequency
• Breaker failure protection

Notice, that these functions are not linked to the RIOPlus interface. They will be linked to the RIOPlus

7 OMICRON Test Strategy

The OMICRON test strategy is described in the OMICRON Protection Test Template (PTT) Overcurrent
documentation. For detailed information, see the PTT Overcurrent documentation.

8 Converter Structure
The converter is divided into two sections: the 7SJ6x section and the RIO section. Both sections consist of
several function blocks. The converter comes up in standard view; the RIOplus section and the template
controller section only be seen in advanced view.

8.1 7SJ6x Section

The Customer Input section includes parameters which can be changed by the user. All relay
parameters are included in this section and can be set to the actual relay values.

8.1.1 Relay Parameter Block

In this block, setting parameters are included. The parameters are grouped and named as in the Siemens
DIGSI software. Each parameter in this block can be identified by a Foreign ID, which is identical to the
parameter ID in DIGSI.

8.1.1.1 Additional Information

This block has been added for relay specific parameters such as tolerances or angles of directional
elements which cannot be set by the user, because they are constant values. All values set in this block
can be found in the chapter "Technical Data" of the relay's documentation. Typically, these blocks do not
have to be changed (except the General Information and Circuit Breaker Information block), as they are
already set to the values given in the user manual of the relay.

Figure 4: Setting general information

The General Information block contains the parameters which are important for the test report, e.g.
information about the substation and the feeder. Furthermore it contains power system parameters which
are important for the test modules. These parameters are linked to the device part of the RIO section and
are available in the test report.

8.1.1.2 Helper Parameters/Template Controller (Advanced view)

The Helper Parameters block contains special values which are needed for some tests, especially for
tests by using LinkToXRIO. These are mainly calculated values which cannot be calculated by using
LinkToXRIO and therefore have to be stored in this section. Other values needed for customer designed
tests can be stored in this block.

8.1.2 RIOPlus (Advanced view)

The RIOplus block contains the interface, which provides the link between the XRIO converter and all test
modules which have no access to RIO functions. All tests using basic test modules like Ramping or State
Sequencer have to be linked to the parameters in the RIOplus section of the converter.

8.1.2.1 NamePlate
The NamePlate block contains all necessary information to identify the protection device to be tested. This
block contains the relay vendor, serial number, model, the relay location and a description.

8.1.2.2 PowerSystemParameters
The number of phases, phase rotation and the nominal frequency are stored in this block.

8.1.2.3 Overcurrent Protection Phase-Phase

This block contains all necessary data to test the phase-phase overcurrent protection. The nominal values
and CT / VT settings, used by this protection function, can be found here. All stages of the phase-phase
overcurrent protection function in the relay are modeled as sub blocks of the overcurrent protection
phase-phase block. Each stage sub block stores information about the directional element, pickup value,
operating time, pickup-drop off ratio and the curve type of the modeled overcurrent stage.

8.1.2.4 Overcurrent Protection Phase-Ground

This block contains all necessary data to test the phase-ground overcurrent protection. The nominal
values and CT / VT settings used by this protection function can be found here. All stages of the phase-
ground overcurrent protection function in the relay are modeled as sub blocks of the overcurrent
protection phase-ground block. Each stage sub block stores information about the directional element,
pickup value, operating time, pickup-drop off ratio and the curve type of the modeled overcurrent stage.

8.1.2.5 Overcurrent Protection - Unbalanced Load

This block contains all necessary data to test the unbalanced load overcurrent protection. The nominal
values and CT / VT settings used by this protection function can be found here. All stages of the
unbalanced load overcurrent protection function in the relay are modeled as sub blocks of the overcurrent
protection phase-ground block. Each stage sub block stores information about the directional element,
pickup value, operating time, pickup-drop off ratio and the curve type of the modeled overcurrent stage.

8.1.2.6 Sensitive Ground Fault

This block contains all necessary data to test the sensitive ground fault protection. The nominal values
and CT / VT settings used by this protection function can be found here. The measurement method, the
current phase angle correction, the current and the voltage stages are modeled in this block.

8.1.2.7 Thermal Overload

This block contains all necessary data to test the thermal overload protection. The nominal values and
CT / VT settings used by this protection function can be found here. The thermal overload stages are
modeled in this block.

8.1.2.8 Circuit Breaker

The circuit breaker block contains all necessary data for testing protection functions together with the
circuit breaker. The modeled parameters are 52abPercentage, CloseTime, Forced3PoleOperatingTime,
SinglePoleTripping and TripTime.

8.1.2.9 AutoRecloserProtection
The AutoRecloserProtection block delivers all necessary information needed for tests of the autorecloser
function. The action and reclaim times and autorecloser cycles are modeled in this block.

8.2 RIO
The RIO section of the converter contains all specialized RIO functions which are needed to use the more
specialized test modules (like Advanced Distance or Overcurrent) provided by the OMICRON Test
Universe software.

Warning: Do not change any values in this section. The values have been set using the relay settings of
the Customer Input section.

Note: Do not activate the former test object view in the advanced mode of the XRIO test object. Changing
parameters in this view could disable formulas in the RIO section.

8.2.1 (Directional) DMT/IDMT Overcurrent

This RIO overcurrent function provides the necessary values for testing the overcurrent protection
functions of the 7SJ6x relay with the Test Universe Overcurrent test module. The protection functions
supported by this RIO function include:
• DMT / IDMT Phase/Ground overcurrent
• DMT / IDMT Directional phase/ground overcurrent

The following RIO functions for testing these overcurrent protection functions are available:
• Overcurrent forward direction
• Overcurrent reverse direction

The Siemens 7SJ6x XRIO converter constructs a resulting characteristic curve for each direction of the
overcurrent elements. This means that directional and non-directional stages are compared for forward
and reverse direction. The three stages with the smallest pickup values are combined and the resulting
characteristic curve is shown in the RIO overcurrent function block.

8.2.2 Unbalanced Load

This RIO function provides all necessary values for tests of the unbalanced load (negative sequence)
protection function with the Test Universe Overcurrent test module. A total of three unbalanced load
overcurrent stages are shown as a resulting characteristic curve in the RIO overcurrent unbalanced load
function.

8.2.3 Thermal Overload

The following RIO overcurrent functions for testing the thermal overload protection function with Test
Universe are implemented in the RIO block of the Siemens 7SJ6x XRIO converter:
• Thermal overload
• Thermal overload warn

Each of these modules contains the thermal overload characteristic curve.

8.3 Activating the RIO functions

The RIO functions have to be set to active manually in each Overcurrent test module if the converter is
used in the stand-alone mode. Activate the corresponding RIO function you intend to use in the local test
object as shown in figure 5.

Figure 5: Activating a RIO function

8.4 Specific Features

This section deals with special requirements of some of the converter functions. Functions not listed here
have no known limitations to their functionalities.

8.4.1 Directional/Non-directional Overcurrent

There can be only one active timed overcurrent stage at a time which must have the smallest pickup value
of all active overcurrent stages. Consequently, to avoid malfunction, directional and non-directional timed
overcurrent stages should not be set active simultaneously.

The overcurrent stages tested with the RIO Overcurrent reverse direction function are modeled as
forward stages in the RIO function with the CT star point being automatically set opposite to the device's
CT star point setting. If the device's CT star point is set to towards protection object, the CT star-point
property in the RIO Overcurrent reverse direction function automatically switches to from protection
object.

8.4.2 Unbalanced Load

The IDMT stage has to be the stage with the lowest pickup value.

8.4.3 (Sensitive) Ground Fault

Logarithmic inverse characteristics for this function are not supported.

8.5 Handling the Infinity Value

The infinity value has to be set to +inf in the 7SJ6x section of the converter. It is used in the same way
as the "∞" setting in the DIGSI software. Consequently, the protection functions, which are disabled by
setting them to infinity in DIGSI, behave the same way in the converter.
