1 General Information
The Siemens 7SD61x converter is designed for use with the OMICRON Test Universe 2.22 software for
testing the 7SD61x current differential protection relays. The converter provides all necessary data for
testing the differential, overcurrent functions (see chapter 2) of the 7SD61x relays.
The following software version and functional range are modeled in this converter:
• 7SD61x V4.6
• MLFB: 7SD6101-5BA39-3BA0/DD

Note: This converter is tested with the relay described above. It will work with 7SD61x relays with
firmware version V4.3 also. It may work with similar relays too.

NOTE: The "Relay Parameter Section" with its parameter and ID's is developed according to the XRIO-
Export of DIGSI 4.81. DIGSI 4.80 is not compatible using this XRIO-Converter For the remote side relay
parameters section settings which is done in the block of "Additional Information", the parameters have to
be entered manually to complete the requirements for the end to end tests.

Note: This converter doesn't support the presence of a transformer in the protected zone.

3 Using the Converter

The Siemens 7SD61x XRIO converter can be used as a stand-alone converter or in association with a
relay specific test template.

In any way the converter is used, follow the quick start instructions and create your test using LinkToXRIO
or start using the relay specific test template (for more information, see the test template documentation).
See sections 9.2 for more information about using the XRIO converter with the OMICRON Differential
test module.

4 Required Software Version

To use this converter, you must have a valid license for the OMICRON Test Universe 2.22 software.

5 Functional Range
The Siemens 7SD61 XRIO converter implements the following functions:
• 87 Differential protection for two line terminals (see the Note below)
• 50/51 Definite time and timed overcurrent

Some of the functions listed above use the RIO interface of the Test Universe software. Consequently, the
test modules are configured automatically without using LinkToXRIO.
The following functions use the RIO interface:
• 87L Differential protection
• 50/51 Definite time and timed overcurrent

For testing the other functions, you must use LinkToXRIO.

Note: If you want to use the 7SD61x XRIO converter for testing similar relays such as the 7SD61x relays
for protection of two terminals lines, ensure that the terminal count in the Additional Parameters section
of the XRIO converter is set to 2.

6 Not Supported Functions

The following functions are currently not supported:
• Differential protection for a transformer in the protected zone
• Thermal Overload Protection
• 50HS Instantaneous SOTF
• 79 Autoreclose Function

7 OMICRON Test Strategy

The OMICRON test strategy is described in the OMICRON Protection Test Template (PTT) Differential
documentation. For detailed information, see the PTT Differential documentation.

8 Relay Settings Import

Relay settings can be imported in .xrio format (Digsi 4.81 parameter export). Select the Standard Filter for
XRIO files and open the settings file to import the relay settings into the XRIO-converter.

9 Converter Structure
The converter is divided into two sections: the 7SD61x section and the RIO section. Both sections consist
of several function blocks. The converter comes up in the standard view; the RIOplus section and the
template controller section can only be seen in the advanced view.

9.1 7SD61x Section

The 7SD61x section is divided into four groups: the Relay Parameter Section, the Additional
Information section, the RIO Plus section and the TemplateController section.

9.1.1 Relay Parameter Section

The Relay Parameter Section includes the parameters which have to be changed by the user. The
parameters are grouped and named as in the Siemens DIGSI software. Each parameter in this block can
be identified by a Foreign ID, which is identical to the parameter ID in DIGSI.

Figure 4: Setting the parameters in the Relay Parameter section

9.1.2 Additional Information

This block has been added for relay specific parameters such as tolerances or angles of directional
elements which cannot be set by the user, because they are constant values. All values set in this block
can be found in the chapter "Technical Data" of the relay's documentation. Typically, these blocks do not
have to be changed (except the General Information, Circuit Breaker Information Legs and Line
Information block), as they are already set to the values given in the user manual of the relay.

Additionally, the Line differential protection Information sub block contains line information needed for
testing.

This information is crucial for testing line differential relays, because important test values are calculated
on the basis of the line information. For the 7SD61x relays, the following line differential data has to be set
prior to testing:
• Remote Relay Parameter Section: Includes the necessary information needed from the remote
side to execute the end to end test for the line differential function successfully.

Figure 5: Remote Relay Parameter Section

9.1.3 Template Controller (Advanced view)

The Template Controller block contains special values needed for some tests, especially for tests using
LinkToXRIO. These are mainly calculated values which cannot be calculated using LinkToXRIO and
therefore have to be stored in this section. Other values needed for customer designed test can be stored
in this block.

9.1.4 RIOPlus (Advanced view)

The RIOplus block contains the interface, which provides the link between the XRIO converter and all test
modules which have no access to RIO functions. All tests using basic test modules like Ramping or State
Sequencer have to be linked to the parameters in the RIOplus section of the converter.

9.1.4.1 Nameplate
The NamePlate block contains all necessary information to identify the protection device to be tested. This
block contains the relay vendor, serial number, model, the relay location and a description.

9.1.4.2 Protected Object

This block contains all necessary information about the protected object (an underground cable or an
overhead transmission line). The line has two terminals.

9.1.4.3 Power System Parameters

The number of phases, phase rotation and the nominal frequency are stored in this block.

9.1.4.4 Differential Protection1

This block contains all information needed for differential protection tests. This includes the differential
characteristic and the harmonic restraint elements. As the differential characteristic is identical for all
protected line terminals, the special test values for each line terminal are collected in this block, too. The
differential characteristic is constructed as shown in the 7SD6x V4.6 relay manual.

9.1.4.5 Overcurrent Local

This block contains all necessary data for testing the overcurrent protection of the line's primary terminal.
The nominal values and CT / VT settings used by this protection function can be found here. All stages of
the overcurrent protection function in the relay are modeled as sub blocks of the overcurrent protection
phase-ground block. Each stage sub block stores information about the pickup value, operating time,
pickup-drop off ratio and the curve type of the modeled overcurrent stage.
Note: The RI type inverse and the RXIDG type inverse overcurrent characteristics are not supported. If
one of these characteristics is set, the RIOPlus overcurrent elements will be set to definite time.

9.1.4.6 Circuit Breaker Legs

The circuit breaker block contains all necessary data for testing protection functions together with the
circuit breaker. The modeled parameters are 52abPercentage, CloseTime, Forced3PoleOperatingTime,
SinglePoleTripping and TripTime. There is one circuit breaker block for each line terminal.

9.2 RIO
The RIO section of the converter contains all specialized RIO functions needed to use the more
specialized test modules (like Advanced Differential or Overcurrent) provided by the OMICRON Test
Universe software.
Warning: Do not change any values in this section. The values have been set using the relay settings of
the Customer Input section.
Note: Do not activate the former test object view in the advanced mode of the XRIO test object. Changing
parameters in this view could disable formulas in the RIO section.

9.2.1 Differential
The RIO differential function provides the necessary values for testing the differential protection function
of the 7SD6x relay. The RIO differential function contains all values needed for using the following
OMICRON Test Universe modules:
• Diff Configuration
• Diff characteristic
• Diff trip time
• Diff harmonic restraint

9.2.2 Overcurrent
The overcurrent RIO functions contain the overcurrent characteristics for the phase-phase and phase
ground faults. As there are two overcurrent elements, one for each line terminal, the overcurrent
protection is made always for the local relay. This block is filled with the corresponding test values.

9.3 Specific Features

This section deals with special requirements of some of the converter's functions. Functions not listed
here have no known limitations to their functionalities.

9.3.1 Overcurrent Local

There can be only one active timed overcurrent (IDMT) stage at a time which must have the smallest
pickup value of all active overcurrent stages. Consequently, to avoid malfunction, phase overcurrent and
ground overcurrent IDMT stages should be set to the same characteristic curve.

9.4 Handling the Infinity Value

Values that can be deactivated in the DIGSI software with the setting input "∞" can be disabled in the
XRIO converter, too. Therefore the blocked values in the XRIO converter have to be set to +inf.
