software for testing the 7UT51x current differential relays. The converter provides all necessary data for
testing the transformer differential, overcurrent and thermal overload protection functions (see chapter 2)
of the 7UT51x relays.
The following software version and functional range are modeled in this converter:
• 7UT51x V3.0

Note: This converter is developed by using the 7UT51x relay described above. It may work with similar
differential protection relays.

3 Using the Converter

The Siemens 7UT51x XRIO converter can be used as a stand-alone converter or in association with a
relay specific test template, for example with the OMICRON Transformer Differential Protection template
for the 7UT51x relay.
In any way the converter is used, follow the quick start instructions and create your test using LinkToXRIO
or start using the relay specific test template (for more information, see the test template documentation).

4 Required Software Version

To use this converter, you must have a valid license for the OMICRON Test Universe V2.20 software.

5 Functional Range
The Siemens 7UT51x XRIO converter implements the following functions:
• 87 Differential protection for three transformer windings (see the Note below)
• 50/51 Definite time and timed overcurrent for up to three windings

nd th
Harmonic blocking (2 and 5 )
• 49 Thermal overload protection for up to three windings

OMICRON PTL Siemens 7UT51x V3.0 XRIO Converter User Manual

Some of the functions listed above use the RIO interface of the Test Universe software. Consequently, the
test modules are configured automatically without using LinkToXRIO.
The following functions use the RIO interface:
• 87 Differential protection
• 50/51 Definite time and timed overcurrent

For testing the other functions, you must use LinkToXRIO.

Note: If you want to use the 7UT51x XRIO converter for testing similar relays for protection of two-winding
transformers, ensure that the winding count in the Additional Parameters section of the XRIO converter
is set to 2.

Note: The converter of the 7UT51x is build for 3-phase transformers. Currently the XRIO structure does
not provide the functions and settings for 1-phase transformer. It is possible to build up this feature in
XRIO. For this the Additional Parameters block provides a parameter "Correction factor kGV" for
correction of the test Ipick-up value.

6 Not Supported Functions

The following functions are currently not supported:
• Restricted ground fault differential protection (REF)
• 87 Motor/generator differential protection
• 87 Tie-point differential protection
• Transformer tank protection
• Measured value supervision

7 OMICRON Test Strategy

The OMICRON test strategy is described in the OMICRON Protection Test Template (PTT) Differential
documentation. For detailed information, see the PTT Differential documentation.

8 Converter Structure
The converter is divided into two sections: the 7UT51x section and the RIO section. Both sections consist
of several function blocks.

8.1 7UT51x Section

The Relay Parameter section includes parameters which can be changed by the user. All relay
parameters are included in this section and can be set to the actual relay values.

8.1.1 Relay Parameter Block

In this block, settings parameters are included. The parameters are grouped and named as in the DIGSI
4.81 software. Each parameter in this block can be identified by a parameter ID, which is identical to the
parameter ID in the DIGSI 4.81 software.

Figure 3: Setting the parameters in the Relay Parameter section

8.1.1.1 Additional Information

This block has been added for relay specific parameters such as tolerances or angles of directional
elements which cannot be set by the user, because they are constant values. All values set in this block
can be found in the chapter "Technical Data" of the relay's documentation. Typically, these blocks do not
have to be changed (except the General Information, Circuit Breaker Information Leg a-c and Transformer
Information block), as they are already set to the values given in the user manual of the relay.

Additionally, the Transformer Information subblock contains transformer information needed for testing.
This information is crucial for testing transformer differential relays, because important test values are
calculated on the basis of the transformer information. For the 7UT51x relays, the following transformer
data has to be set prior to testing:
• Number of Legs: States whether the test object is a two- or three-winding transformer. This
parameter is linked to the relay parameter "Selection of protected object"
(DIGSI 7801)
• Reference Leg: The reference side of the transformer is fixed to the high-voltage side,
because the differential test modules need the high-voltage side (primary)
to create error-free tests.
• Winding Type: The type of each winding, delta or "Wye"
• StarPoint Grounding: To be set to "true" when the corresponding StartPoint transformer winding
is grounded.
• Correction factor kVG: This factor corrects the test Ipick-up value depending on the transformer
vector group, I0-elimination and fault type.

8.1.2 RIOPlus
The RIOPlus block contains the interface providing the link between the XRIO converter and all test
modules which have no access to RIO functions. All tests using basic test modules like Ramping or State
Sequencer have to be linked to the parameters in the RIOPlus section of the converter.

8.1.2.1 NamePlate
The NamePlate block contains all necessary information to identify the protection device to be tested. This
block contains the relay vendor, serial number, model, the relay location and a description.

8.1.2.2 ProtectedObject
This block contains all necessary information about the protected object (a transformer). The transformer
object has three windings assembled. Furthermore this block contains a dummy block for a
generator/motor as protected object. This functionality for the generator/motor or tie-point differential
protection is currently not supported, but it is possible to model this functionality in RIOPlus and RIO.

8.1.2.3 PowerSystemParameters
The number of phases, phase rotation and the nominal frequency are stored in this block.

8.1.2.4 TransformerDifferentialProtection
This block contains all information needed for transformer differential protection tests. This includes the
differential characteristic and the harmonic restraint elements. As the differential characteristic is identical
for all protected transformer windings, the special test values for each transformer winding are collected in
this block, too. The differential characteristic is constructed as shown in the AREVA P633 relay manual.

8.1.2.5 OvercurrentProtection Leg a

This block contains all necessary data for testing the overcurrent protection of the transformer's primary
winding. The nominal values and CT / VT settings used by this protection function can be found here. All
stages of the overcurrent protection function in the relay are modeled as subblocks of the overcurrent
protection phase-ground block. Each stage subblock stores information about the pickup value, operating
time, pickup-drop off ratio and the curve type of the modeled overcurrent stage.

8.1.2.6 OvercurrentProtection Leg b

This block contains all necessary data for testing the overcurrent protection of the transformer's secondary

8.1.2.7 OvercurrentProtection Leg c

This block contains all necessary data for testing the overcurrent protection of the transformer's tertiary

8.1.2.8 ThermalOverloadProtection Leg a

This block contains all necessary data for testing the thermal overload protection of the transformer's
primary winding. The nominal values and CT / VT settings used by this protection function can be found
here. The thermal overload characteristics are modeled in this block.

8.1.2.9 ThermalOverloadProtection Leg b

This block contains all necessary data for testing the thermal overload protection of the transformer's
secondary winding. The nominal values and CT / VT settings used by this protection function can be
found here. The thermal overload characteristics are modeled in this block.

8.1.2.10 ThermalOverloadProtection Leg c

This block contains all necessary data for testing the thermal overload protection of the transformer's
tertiary winding. The nominal values and CT / VT settings used by this protection function can be found
here. The thermal overload characteristics are modeled in this block.

8.1.3 Template Controller

The Template Controller block contains special values or calculations needed for some tests, especially
for tests using LinkToXRIO. These are mainly calculated values which cannot be calculated using
LinkToXRIO and therefore have to be stored in this section. Other values needed for customer designed
test can be stored in this block.

8.1.3.1 Backup Overcurrent

The backup overcurrent block contains all necessary data for testing the overcurrent protection IPickup
value. Furthermore it includes a function to sort the OC stages and its curve characteristic for the
overcurrent trip time test. The whole calculation function is seen in the Script Functions screen of the
XRIO converter.

8.1.3.2 Circuit Breaker Leg a-c

The circuit breaker block contains all necessary data for testing protection functions together with the
circuit breaker. The modeled parameters are 52abPercentage, CloseTime and TripTime. There is one
circuit breaker block for each transformer winding.

8.2 RIO
The RIO section of the converter contains all specialized RIO functions needed to use the more
specialized test modules (like Advanced Differential or Overcurrent) provided by the OMICRON Test
Universe software.

Warning: Do not change any values in this section. The values have been set using the relay settings of
the Customer Input section.

Note: Do not activate the former test object view in the advanced mode of the XRIO test object. Changing
parameters in this view could disable formulas in the RIO section.

8.2.1 Differential
The RIO differential function provides the necessary values for testing the differential protection function
of the 7UT51x relay. The RIO differential function contains all values needed for using the following
OMICRON Test Universe modules:
• Diff Configuration
• Diff characteristic
• Diff trip time
• Diff harmonic restraint

OMICRON PTL Siemens 7UT51x V3.0 XRIO Converter User Manual

8.2.2 Overcurrent Leg a/Leg b/Leg c

The overcurrent RIO functions contain the overcurrent characteristics for the phase-phase and phase-
ground faults. As there are three overcurrent elements, one for each transformer winding, the overcurrent
protection is divided into three blocks. These blocks are filled with the corresponding test values.
The RIO overcurrent function contains all values needed for using the following OMICRON Test Universe
modules:
• Overcurrent

8.3 Activating the RIO functions

The RIO functions have to be set to active manually in each Overcurrent trip test and each Thermal
overload warning or trip time module if the converter is used in the stand-alone mode. Activate the RIO
function you intend to use in the local hardware configuration as shown below.

Figure 4: Activating a RIO function

8.4 Specific Features

This section deals with special requirements of some of the converter's functions. Functions not listed
here have no known limitations to their functionalities.

8.4.1 Overcurrent Primary/Secondary/Tertiary

There can be only one active timed overcurrent (IDMT) stage at a time which must have the smallest
pickup value of all active overcurrent stages. Consequently, to avoid malfunction, phase overcurrent and
ground overcurrent IDMT stages should be set to the same characteristic curve. Each of the 7UT51x
relay's overcurrent elements is fixed to a corresponding transformer winding.

8.5 Handling the Infinity Value

Values that can be blocked with +* in the DIGSI 4.81 software can be disabled in the XRIO converter, too.
Therefore the blocked values in the XRIO converter have to be set to +inf.
