1 General Information
The 7UT51x transformer differential template is used for testing the current differential, overcurrent and
thermal overload protection functions of the 7UT51x relay. This template comprehends different modules
for testing the main protection functions and the most important backup protection functions. It is designed
and configured for use with the 7UT51x XRIO converter which is included in this template. For more
information about the converter, see the Siemens 7UT51x V3.0 XRIO Converter User Manual).
Note: The template is designed and built for use with the Test Universe 2.20 SR1 software.
Annotations:
• Although this template is developed particularly for the relay specified above, it can also be used
for testing similar protection relays.
• The OMICRON PTTs are designed for an experienced OMICRON user. The use of the Test
Universe software, the XRIO technology with LinkToXRIO should be familiar (see
http://www.omicron.at/products/training/ for training information).
The template can be used for testing the following protection functions:
• 87 Transformer current differential protection
• 50, 50N, 51, 51N Definite time and instantaneous phase overcurrent
• 49 Thermal overload protection
• CB auxiliary contacts
Note: If higher currents are needed for testing (e.g. relays with Inom = 5 A), the current output
configuration can be adapted and amplifiers like the CMA 156 can be used.
The following pictures show the connection of the CMC 256 to the relay. Figure 3 shows the connection
diagram for primary to secondary tests and Figure 4 shows the connection for primary to tertiary tests.
In the Analog Outputs dialog box, the current outputs have to be routed to the name variables. Figure 3
shows the Analog Output configuration.
In the Binary / Analog Inputs dialog box, configure the signals as follows:
• 1 trigger signal set to Trip End a
• 1 trigger signal set to Trip End b
• 1 trigger signal set to Trip End c
• 1 trigger signal set to Start
• 1 trigger signal set to Thermal Overload Warning
• 1 signals for the circuit breaker auxiliary contacts set to CB aux. Leg a (52a)
• 1 signals for the circuit breaker auxiliary contacts set to CB aux. Leg b (52a)
• 1 signals for the circuit breaker auxiliary contacts set to CB aux. Leg c (52a)
Note: The binary inputs are preset to potential free. Change these predefined settings to the values
needed at the test site.
The necessary signals, trip signal, starting signal and circuit breaker auxiliary contacts (CB aux.), have to
be routed to the following binary inputs:
• Trip End a to: binary input 1
• Trip End b to: binary input 2
• Trip End c to: binary input 3
• Starting to: binary input 5
• Thermal Overload Warning to: binary input 6
• Trip CB aux. Leg a to: binary input 7
• Trip CB aux. Leg b to: binary input 8
• Trip CB aux. Leg c to: binary input 9
Note: The circuit breaker auxiliary contact is required for the trip test with the circuit breaker. If the circuit
breaker auxiliary contact cannot be connected to the binary inputs, the trip test with the circuit breaker
cannot be performed.

6 Functional Range
The test modules are grouped according to the protection function to be tested. The template includes test
modules for the following protection functions:
The test modules are activated automatically when the template is loaded. If a protection function is
deactivated in the test object, the corresponding test modules are deactivated automatically.
If a test module has been deactivated, it will not be activated automatically. In this case, activate the test
module manually or reset the template to the initial state (all modules activated) as follows: On the Test
menu, point to User Command, and then click CheckAllModules.
Note: Test modules will only be unchecked after the test object or the Hardware Configuration has been
opened during a test.
Note: Do not only rely on the automatic assessment of the test points in the test modules but check the
plausibility of all test results manually to achieve maximum reliability of the test results.
9 Template Structure
The structure of the 7UT51x differential test template is shown below.
Note: The diff operating characteristic is based on Iref (primary) values of the 7UT51x relay. It is not
based on Inom as shown in the test module. Additional search lines can be added by the user.
Figure 11: Diff trip time characteristic test primary to secondary side
Note: The test point can be modified by the user. If the test current is too low, remove and set a new test
point.
Figure 12: Diff harmonics blocking test related to the reference leg (here primary side)
Note: The differential function has to be blocked before testing the overcurrent functionality.
9.9 Thermal Overload Trip Time and Thermal Overload Warning Signal Test
The thermal overload function of the relay is tested with two OMICRON StateSequencer test modules by
simulating a three-phase fault. The test shot for the trip test is set to 1.15 × IN.
The thermal overload warning is tested with a second OMICRON StateSequencer test module
implementing the same test shot as the module used for the trip test. The only difference is the monitored
binary input. While the trip signal is monitored in the trip test, the warning input serves as a trigger in the
test of the thermal overload warning. The memory of the relay's thermal overload model has to be reset
prior to the second test. For more information, see the relay manual.
Note: The thermal overload warning can only be tested if the warning signal of the thermal overload
function is routed to one of the relay's outputs.
Note: The StateSequencer Module has a max. test time of 838s. Thus if the time point for the thermal
overload warning stage or the thermal overload trip time stage Tnom is bigger than 838s, please change
the load current in the xRio-Converter. The parameter for the load current will be find in the XRIO-
Converter under Additional Parameters – Relay Information – 49 Thermal Overload.
9.11 CB Test
For testing the trip time with circuit breaker contacts test, an OMICRON State Sequencer test module is
used. This test is divided into three sequencer states: pre-fault, fault and post-fault. The fault is a three-
pole fault with Idiff = 2 × Inom. The time elapse between the trip command and the circuit breaker open is
evaluated.
After the wiring has been adapted, the primary to tertiary tests can be executed. These tests are similar to
the primary to secondary tests described above.
9.13 Using the 7UT51x Transformer Differential Template for Two Winding Tests
If you want to use the 7UT51x transformer differential template for testing two-winding transformers with a
relay similar to the relay, connect the "Relay Trip End c" signal to the "Relay Trip End b" signal. This
ensures that all trip signals routed in the test modules are available.
