An Organization is:
Organization Defined:
Collection of individuals forming a coordinated system of specialized
activities for the purpose of achieving certain goals over some extended
period of time.
An organization needs individuals with a coordinated system!
Common Features of Organizations:
Network of individuals
System
Coordinated activities
Division of labor
Goal orientation
Continuity over time, regardless of individual membership change
Organizations Resources
Tangible:
Property
Factories
Equipment
Inventory
Intangible:
Reputation of the organization
Professional relationships within the organizations and with business
partners
Organizational culture
Peoples knowledge and skills

Both tangible and intangible resources have monetary values


Tangibles can be bought but intangibles have to be built, earned, and
developed
Tangibles can cost a lot at the start, but their value can depreciate over
time
Intangibles are difficult to build but easy to destroy

Human Capital

Sum of skills, knowledge, and general attributes of people in the


organization
Organizational Behavior
Actions of individuals and groups in an organizational context
How should employees behave in an organization?
o Specific tasks must be achieved
o Professional
o Come in on time, dress appropriately, address seniors properly,
etc.
Managing Organizational Behavior
Actions focused on:
o Acquiring hiring the right people (those that fit the role
required)
o Developing training
o Applying knowledge and skills of people
Strategic OB Approach
Organizing and managing peoples knowledge and skills to;
o Implement strategy
o Gain competitive advantage
o E.g. Ateneos strategy core curriculum (Philo, Theo) aims to
allow graduates to differentiate themselves from graduates of
other schools
