BA-100LB

Product Information

BA-100LB is a stabilized dispersion of colloidal carbon powder in water, intended for use in gas and oil
well cementing operations to prevent gas migration. Gas migration can cause zone communication,
reduced or lost productivity, and surface safety problems.
APPLICATIONS

Gas migration occurs in the cement-filled region of a well when the well bore passes through a region of
pressurized gas. There is the possibility that the gas in the formation can enter the cement matrix and
migrate/percolate into other porous formations and may even reach the surface.
The problem occurs when the gas pressure is greater than the hydrostatic pressure of the cement
column, a phenomenon common to all cement slurries, irrespective of initial density, as they transform
from liquid to solid. During this transition phase, there is a period of gelation, accompanied by loss of
water by filtration and chemical contraction or shrinkage. This results in reduced pressure within the
cement matrix, allowing gas to pass, initially internally through the cement matrix, and eventually
through the creation of macroscopic channels by gas percolation.
For optimal results, BA-100LB should be used in conjunction with recognized industry best practice to
ensure adequate bonding between the cement/pipe and cement/formation as well as complete removal
of mud. This combination of a specific anti-gas migration additive like BA-100LB in properly designed
cement slurries and the implementation of best industry practice will minimize the risk of gas
migration.

BENEFITS

Addition of BA-100LB, a finely powdered carbon, to well cements, substantially or completely

eliminates fluid migration during the transition phase of setting, limiting the mobility of the
interstitial fluid by physically blocking the pores, eliminating fluid or gas movement within the
cement matrix.
BA-100LB is most effective when it is well dispersed in the cement, enhancing fluid-loss control,
thus producing cost effective cement slurries.
When the cement is still fluid, BA-100LB stabilizes the slurry reducing free water development
by the creation of a colloidal gel structure.
BA-100LB is a mechanically inert material that imparts small changes in the mechanical
properties of the slurry, improving its flexibility, especially in combination with PVA based fluid
loss additives.
BA-100LB can be used across a wide range of temperatures between 60 and 400F, and is
compatible with most common cement additives, whether used with fresh or salt water.
Experimental and field data support the concept that BA-100LB reduces set cement
permeability thereby improving long term zonal isolation.

INTERACTION WITH CEMENT

During the setting phase (hydration) of the cement there is

a reduction in pressure on the internal pores of the slurry,
which allows gas to pass. The process of setting of the
cement involves hydration of the cement, and a growth of
the cement particles. During this hydration phase the
cement stays gas-impermeable, because the colloidal gel
created by the carbon particles and the Fluid Loss additive
block the pore throats between the growing cement crystals.
This is measured as a sharp drop in transmitted hydrostatic
pressure with no gas flow through the cement. In the longer
term,

permeability and improves zonal isolation.

SLURRY DESIGN

The product should be added to the mix water after the addition of other additives or directly
and simultaneously when using BJ LAS.
The percentage of BA-100LB used varies between 0.5 and 3.00 gal/sack, depending on the
required density of the cement slurry.
Use 0.8 gal/sack of BA-100LB is a typical quantity to give a slurry with density between 1.85 1.92 kg/L (15.4 - 16ppg).
Although BA-100LB is compatible with commonly used well cement dispersants, CD-33L is
recommended.
