Module 1
The Roles of the Teacher and Learner, Approaches and Methods

1.1

Introduction

When people are asked to describe what

makes a good teacher and what makes a
good learner many common characteristics
are listed. By considering the qualities of a
good teacher and a good learner, we can
begin to understand the roles that make a
classroom function most effectively.
Developing a good relationship between the
teacher and the learner aids in the learning
process. Understanding the role of the
teacher and the learner and how that role
and relationship are continuously changing
can empower both the teacher and learner in the learning process. In the next section
you will find a list of what some students and teachers believe to be characteristics of a
good teacher. Following that is a list of characteristics of a good learner and the
interactive nature of the teacher-learner relationship. The final section of the module is
about the approaches and methodologies teachers use today in ESL/EFL classrooms
around the world.
