4. Eight moles of solid SiO occupies a cube which measures 2.25 inches on each side.

Calculate the
density of MgO in g/cm3.
Answer:
Volume = (5.715)^3 c.m3
Si: 28.08 g/mol
O: 16.00 g/mol
SiO: 44.08 g/mol
Density = M/V = moles*(molecular mass of Si0)/(volume occupied)
= 44.08*8/(5.715)^3
= 1.89 g/cm3
5. Calculate the engineering strain for a beam of stainless steel under tensile stress with an original length
of 7.85 inches and a gage length of 9.66 inches.
Answer:

Engineering strain is defined as the amount of deformation in the direction of the applied force
divided by the initial length of the material
Engineering strain = (9.66-7.85)/7.85
= 0.23
3. A 70 wt% Cu 30 wt% Zn alloy rod with a manufactured length of 12 mm has been elongated to 13.5
mm. Determine the hardness and tensile strength of the elongated rod.
Answer:
Strain = (13.5-12)/12 = 1.5/12 = 0.125

2. A bar of 70 Cu30 Zn brass alloy has 50 percent elongation and final cross sectional area of 12.75
mm2 following cold working. Calculate the original cross sectional area before elongation.
Answer:

Suppose initial length = L

Elongated length = 3L/2
So final volume = initial volume
A2*(3L/2) = A1*(L)

A1 = A2*(3/2)
A1 = 12.75*3/2
A1 = 19.125 mm2
So original cross sectional area before elongation was 19.125 mm2

1. What is the minimum manganese content in a FeMn0.05 alloy in order for the alloy to have a
Charpy Vnotch impact energy of at least 50 joules at 0C?
Answer:

From graph we can see that for 1% Mn content the impact energy at 0 degree
celcius is around 45 j.
And as we decrese the Mn content the impact energy decreases. So the minimum
Mn content needed to have an impact energy of 50 j is 1%.
