A reinforced concrete column 200 mm in diameter is designed to carry an axial

compressive load of 300 kN. Determine the required area of the reinforcing steel
if the allowable stresses are 6 MPa and 120 MPa for the concrete and steel,
respectively. Use Young’s modulus for concrete and steel as Eco = 14 GPa and
Est= = 200 GPa (5mks).
b. A composite bar is made up a brass rod 25 mm diameter enclosed in a steel tube
of 40mm external and 30 mm internal diameter. The rod and tube being coaxial
and equal in length are securely fixed at each end. If the stresses in brass and
steel are not to exceed 70Mpa and 120Mpa respectively, find the load (p) the
composite bar can safely carry (5mks)
c. A brass bar having cross sectional area 100 mm 2 is subjected to axial forces as shown in
figure Q 2 (c). Find the total elongation of the bar if given Young’s modulus is
1.05x105N/mm2 (5mks)

d. A rod is 2 m long at a temperature of 10°C. Find the expansion of the rod, when
the temperature is raised to 80°C. If this expansion is prevented, find the stress
induced in the material of the rod. Take E=1.0x 105 MN/m2 and α = 0.000012 per
degree centigrade (3mks).

e. A square bar 20 mm side is held between two rigid plates and loaded by an axial
force P equal to 450kN as shown in figure q1 .Find the reactions at the ends A
and C and the extension of portion AB . Take Young’ s modulus as 2000Gpa
(6mks).
f. A solid shaft transmits 250 kW at 100 revolutions per minute . If the shear stress is not
to exceed 75 Mpa, what should be the diameter of the shaft?. If this shaft is to be
replaced by a hollow one whose internal diameter is 0.6 times the outer diameter,
determine the size and the percentage saving in weight, the maximum shearing stress
being the same (15mks).
g. A composite shaft of circular cross section 0.5m long is rigidly fixed at each end
as shown in the figure below. A 0.3m length is 50mm diameter and is made of
bronze to which is joined the remaining 0.2m length a 25mm diameter made of
steel. If the limiting shear stress in the steel is 55MN/m 2, determine the
maximum torque that can be applied at the joint. What is then the maximum
shear stress in the bronze. (G steel= 82 GPa, G= 41bronze GPa) (5mks).
h. A 32mm diameter solid shaft forms the transmission in a drill of an oil well 3350 m deep.
The drilling speed is 500revolutions per minute and maximum shear stress is limited to
50Mpa. Find the limiting value of the torque transmitted and the angle of twist of one end
of the shaft to the other and the power required for the drive (5mks)
i. A close coiled spring is to have a stiffness of 1kN/m in tension, a maximum load
of 50N and a maximum shearing stress of 120 MPa. The solid length of the wire
(that is, when the coils are touching) is to be 45mm. Find the diameter of the
wire, the mean diameter of the coils and the number of the coils required. Take G
50GPa (15mks).
j. A compound bar 1.5 m long is made up of two pieces of metal; one of steel and the other
of copper. The cross sectional area of steel is 45cm2, while that of copper is 32 cm2. Both
pieces are 1.5 m long and are rigidily connected together at both ends. The temperature
of the bar is now raised to 250 0 C. The bar is restrained againist bending. Calculate the
stresses in the two materials.
Coefficient of linear expansion of steel =0.000012 per 0C
Coefficient of linear expansion of copper =0.0000175 per 0C
E for steel =206Gpa
E for copper=107Gpa (5 Marks)
