ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LESSON PLAN

(Adapted from Madeline Hunters Research)

Student Name: Alessia Canosa
Date: January 26, 2017 Age Group: 5 6
years old
Grade: Grade 1
Unit/Subject: Data Management and Probability - Math
Materials: (List the materials needed for this lesson)
- White Board
- White Board Marker
- PowerPoint
- Handout (Exit Ticket & Interpreting Graphs)
- Pencils
Objectives: (What the students should/learn/accomplish/master/understand
as a result of the lesson)
The students will begin to learn how to collect and organize primary
data with assistance. The students will begin to demonstrate how to create a
pictograph. The children will begin to interpret the data on pictographs.
Anticipatory Set: (In what way will you activate their prior knowledge and
experience to help them relate to todays lesson?)
- I will ask the students if anyone knows what a pictograph is.
- Using the whiteboard, I will allow some students to come up and draw
what they think a pictograph might be.
Teaching: (Step by step discussion for how the lesson will be taught)
Instructional Input:
What knowledge will you communicate to the students so that they
understand the objective of the lesson (film, tape, video, pictures, etc.)
I will tell the children we are focusing on a specific type of graph called a
pictograph. I will introduce the pictograph by showing pictures of a
pictograph and asking
- What do you notice about this graph?
- How many children chose the desired amount of fruit?
- Which fruit has more likes? And less?
Guided Practise:
What activities will the students perform under your supervision to ensure
that they are able to practise the material/concepts taught in the lesson?
How will you support students when errors are made?
As a group the students will begin to answer questions based on pictures of
pictographs on the PowerPoint. I will encourage them to talk amongst
themselves to do the task. The children will be given a second chance to
answer the question if they are incorrect.
Modeling:
How will you demonstrate the skill or competence so the student will also be
able to do it? (Use of materials to show students examples of what is
expected as a final product of their work)

I will model the expectation of the activity by creating a pictograph with the
students, modelling each step as I do it.
Checking for Understanding:
How will you check that the students have understood/learned the
objectives?
I will ask the students questions related to the graphs created and seen on
the PowerPoint.
Questioning Strategies:
What types of questions might you ask to probe higher level thinking?
I will ask students how else might they be able to record this type of data,
and what they think about using pictographs.
Closure:
Develop a statement that brings the lesson to an appropriate conclusion. A
statement of closure is the act of reviewing and clarifying the key points of a
lesson. It is used to:
1. Cue students to the fact that they are at the end of the lesson
2. Help organize student learning
3. Help students form a clearer picture of what the lesson is all about
- I will close the lesson by having children think of ideas for future
pictographs.
- The children will discuss which idea they think is best.
- While children are completing their Exit Ticket, I will review the
pictograph information learned.
Independent Practice:
List homework or seatwork assignments the students will be expected to
complete in order to practice the material/skill without teacher
supervision
- The children will be given a handout with completed pictographs on it,
they will be required to state which has either more or less.
- The children will be given an exit ticket to complete reviewing what
was taught during the lesson.
Reflection:
- What went well? Provide examples for how you know it went well.
- What didnt go well? Provide examples for how you know it didnt go
well
- What did you learn?
- What might you do differently next time you implement this same
experience and why?
- Did you have to make any adaptations or modifications? If so, what
were they?
- What type of experience might you plan to extend on this one?
