Beats Of
Selangor
An Adventure
Into Cultures
Via Music
Fact:

Selangor the
heart of Malaysia is a melting
pot of cultures,
some forgotten.

ecently, the State Economic Development Unit Selangor together with GAYA Travel, and the Selangor
Exco for Youth Generation Development, Sports, Culture, and Entrepreneurship, and PUSAKA, organized an
event called Rentak Selangor (Beats Of Selangor) that
focuses on cultural music and dance of various groups
in Selangor, Malaysia.

This event took us on a journey back in time where

the music of old graced the few radios with music from
genres that were once popular but have long lost its
lustre; such as Keroncong, Cempuling, etc. With the
aim of preserving culture, we embarked on a learning
adventure into the Beats of Selangor.

Adventure Into The Past

^An old train engine on display at Alam Shah Museum.

Our adventure started at the Alam Shah Museum

in Shah Alam where we went on an hour and a half
journey to a place in Sepang, a coastal area in Selangor (Malaysia), and stopped at the Banghuris
Homestay in a village called Hulu Chuchoh. Here
we were greeted warmly by our hosts as we took
our seats at the dining table.
11

Cempuling

^Feature Cempuling Cendana Klasik.

Here we were entertained by a band called the Cempuling Cendana Klasik, a band that plays a genre of
music called Cempuling, a genre of music from Java.
The line up of instruments here are various traditional percussion instruments, an accordion, as well as
more modern stringed instruments, and a keyboard.

The traditional percussion instruments include the

Rebana Ibu, Rebana Gong, Rebana Kempul, Rebana Kempreng, Enteng-Enteng, and the Rebana
Anak. These instruments form the basic beats of
Cempuling music. Adding guitars, keyboard, and
an accordion gives it a more melodious tune.
13

^Cempuling Cendana Klasik in action.

Cempuling Cendana Klasik plays a variety of songs

from local classical tunes to other genres the likes of
cha-cha, pop, etc. with the exception of rock. They
also sing songs from other countries such as Thai,
Hindustan, Chinese (Malaysia / Hong Kong / China),
and Arabic song.

Banghuris Homestay

Should you be interested in staying the night, Banghuris Homestay offers village type accommodations.

Bugis (Buginese) Dances

The Bugis have long migrated to Malaysia yet not

much is known about their culture. Even in Sulawesi, Indonesia where they came from, the Bugis culture is lost. Lucky, all is not lost as a small group of
Buginese people in Malaysia are trying their very
best to reignite the flames of their culture.

^Professor Dr. Haji Mohd Lahir Bin Haji Maharam.

Professor Dr. Haji Mohd Lahir Bin Haji Maharam, an

expert in Buginese dances and Mohamad Romazi
Bin Nordin, both of the Buginese Malay Association of Selangor are hard at work bring back the
Bugis Culture with the teaching and practise of the
language, music, and dance. On this trip we experienced the Citra Ugik (The Bugis Ensemble).

17

Tarian Poja or Pooja

(Pooja Dance)

According to Professor Dr. Haji Mohd Lahir Bin Haji

Maharam, In the days of old before the introduction of Islam to the Buginese community, the Pooja
Dance started as a dance to praise the Gods. Later
after the introduction of Islam it was used to praise
the sultan and is dance performed only in the palace
for the royal family and no one else.

That of course is history and today the Pooja Dance

is used publicly as a dance to welcome guests and
visitors to functions, celebrations, etc. on many occasions. It has since become an art and an important part of the Buginese culture.

19

Tarian Maduppa Bosara

(Maduppa Bosara Dance)

The Maduppa Bosara Dance used to be a dance

performed while the sultan was dining. These days it
is a dance performed to welcome guests with sweet
desserts. These sweet desserts are to signify gratefulness as in being grateful for having one (visitors)
come visit.

The bosara is a metal dish used when serving

the sweet desserts to visitors and guests. Dancers
dressed in baju bodo (literally means stupid clothing) as it is a simple square shirt without any decorations; dance about carrying the bosara, placing
it on the table where the guests or visitors are seated at the end of the dance.

21

Tarian Zapin Cemara

(Zapin Cemara Dance)

The Zapin Cemara Dance is an upbeat Buginese

dance that incorporates martial arts movements
called silat. The Zapin Cemara Dance is normally
performed at the end of a martial arts competition or
demonstration.

Tarian Pattennung
(Pattennung Dance)

The Pattennung Dance is a dance that depicts

women weaving with moves showcasing the patience and hard work that women put into the craft
of weaving cloth. The moves begins with mappali
or thread spinning, followed by massau which
means inserting the thread into a weaving machine.
Next is to weave the thread into cloth. This dance
originated in Toraja, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.
23

Urumee Melam

^ World famous Urumee Melam band, the Chinna

Rasa Urumee Melam Masana Kali.
Urumee Melam is a drumming method that comes
from Tamil Nadu, South India. This method of
drumming was brought over by the Indian community that migrated over to Malaysia from South India and is usually played during religious ceremonies and processions such as Thaipusam, a Hindu
festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community
here in Malaysia.

^The Urumee drum. Checkout the intricate carvings.

Urumee is a type of drum that comes from Tamil

Nadu, South India, and is designed in an hourglass
shape made up of wood, usually jack wood. The
heads are usually made of cow hide. The whole assembly is fastened together using ropes and metal
coils.

25

The Calling Of Spirits

^ Saying a prayer before drumming. A huge golden

statue of Murugan (Hindu deity) in the background.

Urumee Melam is played typically by drummers

called Dalits or the oppressed, and the drumming
is used to call up spirits inducing spirit possessions
and putting some into a trance. The Urumee Melam
drums up various sounds including the sounds of
moaning.

^As they played, souds of moaning can be heard. The

sound is made by rubbing the drum head.

One of the world famous Urumee Melam band is

the Chinna Rasa Urumee Melam Masana Kali, a
Malaysian Urumee Melam band. They not only perform ceremonial drum beats but also more familiar
modern beats from various pop songs.

Mah Meri Dances

^ Mah Meri dancers and musicians.

The Mah Meri tribe is believed to be the oldest indigenous tribe in Malaysia. They are well known
for two types of ritual dances called Tarian Mayin Jooh or Jungle dance and Tarian Topeng or
Mask dance. These dances are accompanied by
music played using drums, bamboo, and a violin.

^A masked dancer joking about whilst performing the

Tarian Topeng.

Female dancers put on traditional clothing made

of natural materials made of materials gotten from
trees as well as a head wear made of palm leaves.
Two male dancers wearing similar clothing with the
exception of an additional wooden mask, dance
around doing things like picking up things, and joking about.

The Rentak Selangor (Beats Of Selangor) was very

educational even for a Selangor born person. It is
good that the Selangor Government put emphasis on
maintaining and keeping these traditions and cultures
alive.

Batu
Caves
A Cave Of
Temples
Interesting:

Batu Caves
Temples were
built by South
Indian migrants
since 1891.

aves, cavities naturally formed in places like

mountains and hills, underground, etc. that conjures
up a sense of mystery and adventure. Caves have
been many things to us humans, such as shelter,
playground of adventure, and places of worship.
Batu Caves is home to the r Subramaniar Swamy Devasthanam temple, also called Batu Caves
temple by the locals.
37

Very Popular

^Inside the caves.

Batu Caves, built in 1891, is a very popular tourist destination. It is also the most popular Hindu
shrine outside India dedicated to Murugan (a Hindu deity), attracting millions of visitors both local
and foreign especially during the Thaipusam festival.

Tallest Statue Of Murugan

Nearing Batu Caves one will see this huge golden

statue. This statue of Murugan stands at about 140
feet and it is the tallest statue of Murugan in the
world. This huge towering statue stands at the entrance to Batu Caves.
39

Caves & Galleries

At the base of Batu Caves there are two temples,

and Art Gallery Cave, and a Museum. The gallery
and museum showcases Hindu statues and paintings. Somewhere about midway up the steps is
another cave section called Dark Cave, a place
showcasing the natural history of the cave.

A Workout

While the entrance to Batu Caves, the Hindu shrines

and two temples sit at the bottom of the cave at
ground level, one will have to climb 272 steps to get
into the main chamber to see more temples. Climbing 272 steps is certainly a good workout.
41

Along the climb one may encounter macaques

hanging out by the side of the steps looking for
food and waiting for a handout. The higher one
climbs the tougher it gets as the muscles start to
feel the strain of the climb.

when one reaches the top one gets a pretty view of

the town below (Gombak). Up here is a huge chamber or hall. With the timing right, nice cool breeze
blows through certain areas. Walking in, one will
come to temples, shops, etc. The atmosphere in
the chamber is cooler too.

43

A Ceremonial Sacrifice

During Thaipusam devotees go into a trance, have

their bodies pierced with skewers and / or large
hooks, etc. carrying a heavy thing called a Kavadi; make their way on foot all the way to the
top climbing each of the 272 steps. An incredible
feat indeed.
> Work going on at the entrance.

Whats There To Do

The climb up is a good way to challenge oneself

and strengthen ones believe in ones capabilities.
Although 272 steps may not sound tough, it really is
quite a challenge especially to the less fit. However, taking that challenge and just climbing no matter
what ones body says will at the end (at the top) be
rewarding.
45

Photography is another thing that can be done.

There are lots of statues to photograph. Should
one not want to engage in photographing these
statues, one can shoot the town below, natural
structures or architecture of Batu Caves, etc.
> The world tallest statue of Murugan.

> The huge chamber at the top.

47

Take Note

As Batu Caves is a place of worship certain things

need to be followed. Dressing is one of them.
Shorts are not allowed and skirts must be below
knee length. Revealing clothing are not allowed
too. It is best to wear pants that are no shorter
than knee length, t-shirt, and comfortable walking
shoes. Other rules include no spitting, no pets,
and no smoking. Do bring a long a bottle of drinking water to rehydrate.

The Mah
Meri
Tribe
A Walk Into An
Old Culture
Fact:

The Mah Meri

are said to be
the oldest indigenous tribe
in Malaysia.

he Mah Meri tribe is believed to be the oldest

indigenous tribe in Malaysia. They used to be sea
gypsies and formidable sea warriors back in the day,
protecting the coastal waters of Selangor from intruders. These days they are no longer sea gypsies
but live in various villages, some along the coastal
areas of Selangor (mainly in Carey Island), some in
Negeri Sembilan, Malacca, and Johor.
> A Mah Meri mask.
53

Mah Meri as they are known now, comes from two

words; Mah meaning people and Meri of which means
forest. But prior to being known as Mah Meri, they were
originally known as Besisi, or Mah Betisek; people
with fish scales, perhaps back when they were sea
gypsies.

Beliefs

The majority of the Mah Meri people believe in and

worship spirits. To them everything has a spirit.
Plants, trees, rocks, wood, etc. have spirits. It could
be a spirit of their ancestors or it could be other
spirits (good and evil). They live their lives trying
their best not to anger any of these spirits. When
a person falls ill, the belief is that a spirit has been
angered and has punished the said person with illness.
> Mah Meri prayer alter.
55

Culture Kept Alive

^Bird on eggs made using palm leaves.

The Mah Meri are expert wood carvers and handicraft makers. Being forest people they make use
of natural things like wood, leaves, etc. turning them
into various handicraft items. What they are famous
for is the wood carvings of certain animals (especially one of a tiger and chains), and face masks.

The wood carvings made by the Mah Meri are not

mere decorative objects but hold spiritual and rich
mythological meanings. Behind some of these wood
carvings are stories that are best told by the woodcarver himself. Such stories and woodcarving skills
have been shared for generations.
57

Dances

One important part of the Mah Meri tribe is their traditional ritual dances. They are well known for two
types of dances called Tarian Mayin Jooh or Jungle
dance and Tarian Topeng or Mask dance. Dances
wear costumes made of natural materials such as
bark, leaves, etc. Two male dancers wear wooden
mask and it is said that when they put on these mask
they take on a new persona.

Tarian Mayin Jooh is performed during Hari

Moyang or Ancestors Day where the Mah Meri
people worship their ancestors, performing various
rituals of which includes cleansing and worshiping
at the spirit huts.
> Guardian of the spirit hut.
59

Story Tellers

The Mah Meri have lots of stories to tell. Some handed

down from many generations and some through their
own personal experiences. One story is that of an old
lady who used to reside in a hut. She wanted children
but unfortunately she could not have one.
> The old lady immortalized at the spirit hut. She is peaking.

^Sharing the story of the old lady at the spirit hut.

One day while walking in the jungle she chanced

upon two tiger cubs and decided to adopt them as
her own children. They lived with her in her hut.
She told people in her village that should they want
to visit they must only come at a certain time (when
the cubs are a sleep). She also said that one day if
she is never seen again, it means that her children
have buried her. There is a deeper meaning to this
story.
61

Mah Meri Cultural Village

To learn more and experience the Mah Meri culture, visit
the Mah Meri Cultural Village in Carey Island. As the Mah
Meri speak do not speak English; bring along a translator

to share.

The Damai
Laut Food
& Fun Hunt
A Road Trip Of
Adventure
Fact:

Lumut is the
gateway to
Pangkor Island
and is famous
for dried sea
produce.

reasure Hunt, the second I heard those

words my mouth automatically said yes even before my brain could comprehend the invitation I was
offered verbally. It was only after saying yes that I
started thinking of all the work I had piled up back
in the office, and all the appointments I have had
made.

67

From Kuala Lumpur

To Lumut

This treasure hunt organized by Swiss-Garden International Hotels, Resorts, and Inns started at the
Swiss-Garden Hotel Kuala Lumpur with the finish line
being the Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut in
Lumut, Perak. The distance is about 241 kilometres
but on a treasure hunt it was a lot more.

The Damai Laut Food and Fun Hunt was broken into
two days. The first day saw us flagging off at 8.30am
hunting all the way from Kuala Lumpur to Lumut visiting towns such as Bidor (the birth place of one of my
favourite noodle places, Pun Chun Restaurant), Teluk
Intan, Sitiawan, and then on to Lumut.
69

^A famous noodle processing place called Hock Chew So

Mee Shua Konpian in Sitiawan, Perak.

We had to crack clues, hunt down a good number of

places where we had to do challenges of which mainly involves eating, taking selfies or wefies, buying or
searching for treasures, and to collect stamps; a sign
that we have completed a certain challenge.
Day two was more manageable although we had more
questions, more challenges, tougher brain teasers,
and two more treasures to get. Day two saw us visiting Batu Gajah, Pasir Panjang, Beruas, the tin mining
town of Tanjung Tualang (also a famous fishing area),
etc.

What A Rush

^Panning marbles in a pan.

We were in a frantic rush all the time having to race

against 18 other teams, and time itself. My mind
was so engrossed with the hunt that I ate so fast
I could not tell what I was tasting, drank so fast I
cannot remember what I had drank, and now sitting back on my office chair... wondering what I had
done.
71

Places Of interest

^Famous bread makers / bakers called Kedai Roti Kim

Hock (Kim Hock Bread Shop).

Of course there are parts of the hunt that I can still

remember thanks to what little grey matter I have left
or perhaps these things have had an impact on me.
So, here they are, not in any order of time category or
place.

Mee Kari Ramli Bidor

I was still full from the heavy breakfast that I had at the
Swiss-Garden Hotel Kuala Lumpur (over ate as the
omelettes were just so tasty). I believe that this was
our first stop. Although feeling full I had to order a bowl
of curry noodles. I told my team that I will eat as much
as I can and the rest will be shared (since we were all
still full).
After the first bite I just went on and on, and I somehow emptied the yummy bowl of curry noodles leaving
nothing to my team mates.
73

James Cendol

Cendol is a cool dessert with fragrant Malaccan brown

sugar syrup, coconut milk, green pudding strips, and
shaved iced mixed together. I love cendol and normally I take my time to savour this delicious dessert,
but this time I downed the bowl of cedol in 14 seconds;
the fastest record I believe during this hunt. Anyway,
James Cendol serves one of the best cendols. A definite must try when one is in Sitiawan.
* In front of Maha Mariamman Temple
Opens 11am-5.30pm

The Last Remaining

Tin Dredge

One of the place we visited is the last remaining tin

dredge in Malaysia. The place is TT5 in Tanjung Tualang. Unfortunately the dredge is currently undergoing
maintenance work as it is sinking slowly, and we were
not allowed to go on it. However, when it reopens, this
tin dredge will house a museum and I will be back to
visit.
75

Kellies Castle

Kellies Castle is a ruined mansion built by a Scottish

planter named William Kellie Smith. Kellies Castle is
situated in Batu Gajah, Perak, and was built as a gift
to his wife as well as to be a home away from home.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck and the mansion did not
see completion.
>Full article in this issue.

Leaning Tower Of Teluk

Intan

Youve probably heard of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

This here is indeed a leaning tower. Just like the one
in Pisa, this tower wasnt meant to lean. The ground
of which it stands on is somewhat soft and the tower
started tilting hence its name, the Leaning Tower of
Teluk Intan.
77

Tua Pek Kong Temple,

Sitiawan

The Tua Pek Kong Temple is a temple that is said to

be over a 100 years old. This temple is where giant
statues of deities lookout into the coast of Pasir Panjang in Sitiawan. There are some 98 statues there of
deities and animals based on the Chinese calendar. It
is a serene place hidden within a village that one can
go to take some photos.

Pasir Panjang Turtle

Sanctuary

Not far from the Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai

Laut is the Pasir Panjang Turtle Sanctuary. This here is
where research and studies of turtles take place. Eggs
are collected from nest before poachers and predators
get to them. These eggs are hatched in a hatchery and
the hatchlings are kept until they are about 6 months
old before they are released back into the sea.
79

I See The Light

^Winning team of the Damai Laut Fun & Food Hunt.

One thing this food and fun hunt has done for me is to
show me that there are so many things to do, see, and
eat in Perak. It certainly is an eye opener. Now, I will just
have to make my way to the Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut again but this time at a slower pace to
enjoy what I had to rush through during the hunt.

Kellies Castle

hen one visits Perak, Kellies Castle is one of the

attractions that one must visit. It is by no means like the
castles in Europe. Far from it in fact. It is actually a ruin,
and not one of a castle but a mansion. Like all ruins,
there is a story behind Kellies Castle.

Back Into History

^The cellar as well as entrance to an underground tunnel.

Kellies Castle is located in Batu Gajah, Perak, Malaysia.

It all started back in the late 1800s, when William Smith
came to Malaya in search of opportunities. He started
his own company and built a successful business called
William Smith Civil Engineers, Architects and Contractors. He then bought 200 acres of land in Batu Gajah for
coffee and rubber.

83

^William and Agnes in their black Marlborough, one of

four cars in his collection.

In 1903 he met Agnes who shortly after became his

wife. They got married and in 1904 Helen, their first
child was born. Their son, Anthony, heir to his estates was born in 1915. They were then living in Kellas House on the grounds of Kellas Estate.
Agnes was feeling rather uncomfortable as she was
used to the cooler weather of England and spent
lots of time at the hill stations such as Maxwell Hill in
Taiping where the climate is cooler. To help her feel
more at home and to show his love for her, he decided to build her a castle.

Construction Begins

William brought in 70 craftsmen from Chennai, Madras

in India, together with bricks and marble to build his
mansion. Construction begun but not long later Williams
finances took a turn and he had to sell off parts of his
estates. World War 1 too played a role interrupting the
delivery of raw materials and funding.
> Steps that leads to the uncompleted 1st floor.
85

Things Got Worse

^A depiction of a room should the castle see completion.

A virulent strain of Spanish Flu struck killing many

of his workers of which included skill masons, etc.
Work on his mansion slowed. In 1926, William Kellie Smith died at the age 56 of pneumonia during a
short trip to Lisbon in Portugal. Devastated, Agnes
returned to Scotland and the construction of Kellies
mansion never saw completion.

An Attraction

That was history. These days Kellies Castle attracts

many visitors. It is one of those places photographers go to, to shoot wedding photos, models, etc.
Visitors flock to the ruin to see and learn about the
place and its history. Ghost hunters too flock there
as there have been reports of ghostly sounds and
sightings.
*Time to turn on the lights and hide under a blanket.
87

Ghost Of William Smith

^William (far right) and Agnes (left most) enjoy time with
friends.

One of the ghosts that call Kellies Castle home is

said to be that of William Kellie Smith himself (seen
by a crew member of a Canadian nature scientists
doing research there). Perhaps he returned to haunt
his incomplete project, a mansion for his loved one.
No one knows. His ghost is said to pace the corridors. Sightings of a child ghosts has also been recorded believed to be that of Helen, the first child of
William and Agnes.

< William
Kellie Smith

89

^Staff members of Williams abode at Kellas Estate.

There have been other ghost sightings at Kellies

Castle of which includes a guard without feet that
stopped a group of visitors from entering the place,
and that of a white ghost with black hair seen by one
of the guards that guard Kellies Castle.

What To Do Here

^A nearby temple that was built by William has a statue

of him (William) amongst the deities.

If youre into ghost hunting, well, youve just found

a new site to visit. For the rest of us, ruins offer lots
of photo opportunities. There are also lots of information about the place for one to read. It is nice to
just go there and experience the place. Dont go
alone though. Bring some friends.

KL Tower
Mini Zoo
A Zoo In Kuala
Lumpur City
Fact:

The KL Tower
Mini Zoo is
home to over 60
species of animals.

^What comes to mind when one mentions Kuala Lumpur.

hen one mentions Kuala Lumpur, what comes

to mind is an image of a modern city with tall skyscrapers, large shopping centres, busy commercial
centres, etc. One thing that probably would not pop
up in ones mind is a zoo. Kuala Lumpur certainly
has a mini zoo right in the city itself.

95

Kids Will Love It

^A parrot welcoming children to the mini zoo.

The iconic KL Tower is certainly a must visit. Right

below it is the KL Tower Mini Zoo. Kids just love seeing and interacting with animals and the KL Tower
Mini Zoo allows just that (not all animals of course).

Once inside there are parrots, cockatoos, and iguanas on branches waiting to be picked up and photographed. There is also a friendly wallaby hopping
about greeting visitors and hoping for a handout. In
big glassed areas are meerkats, prairie dogs, etc.
>An iguana hanging out on a branch.
97

^A disfigured rabbit stares at the camera.

Leaving the air-conditioned area one comes to another area with a large python, a cayman, etc. in
large glassed areas. Here too one gets to pet chickens and observe cute monkeys. Leaving this enclosure will take you out to the open areas.

Larger Animals

Outside one gets to see and feed ostriches, deers,

etc. The cutest animals here with cutest eyes are
the alpacas. Alpacas have thick wool and big round
cute eyes making them so adorable. They will walk
up to you hoping for food.
>The adorable eyes of an alpaca.
99

Petting Area

^Two guinea pigs sharing a vegetable.

At the petting area children get to pet and feed guinea pigs and rabbits. Green vegetables are provided
by the staffs that the rabbits and guinea pigs love
eating unless they are full (or unwell). One thing to
keep in mind is to not allow children to pick up the
rabbits as rabbits generally do not like to be picked
up and can injure (fatally or non fatally) themselves
in their bid to escape.

The Oldest Animals

The oldest animals here would perhaps be the

tortoises. There are a few of them walking about.
These tortoises love vegetable and visitors are allowed to feed them. However, children (and adults)
are not allowed to sit on them. Maybe some have
thus why the staff had to mention so.

101

Feeding Birds

There is an enclosure where colourful sun conures

hangout. With bird seeds in hand one will automatically become an attraction to these sun conures.
They will fly to ones hand to eat the seeds thus allowing for fun photos.

Interesting:

A secluded
peaceful paradise.

^The lobby of the Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai

Laut.

s an angler I have visited Lumut many times.

Lumut is a doorway to many good fishing spots the
likes of Pulau Sembilan (Nine Islands) and Pulau
Jarak (Jarak Island). However, I have not gone there
just for a holiday with my family, unless we intend to
go to yet another island called Pangkor Island.

107

A Paradise In Lumut

^A night shot of the swimming pool and waterfalls.

Recently I stayed at the Swiss-Garden Beach Resort

Damai Laut in Lumut during my participation in the
Swiss-Garden Damai Laut Food and Fun Hunt, and I
must say that it was a pleasant surprise. The SwissGarden Beach Resort Damai Laut is a paradise for
those wanting a place to relax.
The resort sits deep in a secluded beach area of Teluk
Kopiah Forest Reserve. Surrounded by greenery, the
Swiss-Garden Beach Resort Damai Laut offers fresh
air and relaxing sights, a good place to de-stress and
forget about life for awhile.

Lovely Room

I pay a lot of attention to rooms and bed (especially

bed) since there is where I recharge my energy for
the next days travel. Although we didnt get one
with the lovely sea view, I am happy with the room.
It is well decorated, comfortable, and more importantly; clean.
The bed and pillows offered a goodnights relaxing sleep (and naps) being comfortable and clean. I
slept well and woke refreshed. The air-conditioning
is superb as I love lying under a comforter in a cold
room. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
109

A basket of fruits placed on the coffee table welcomed is into our room. Not just the usual one or
two bananas and / or apples. This time we got three
or four bananas, apples, grapes, dragon fruit, kiwis,
etc.; a proper fruit basket.

Activities

There are lots of activities that one can do (or not

do). For the more adventurous there is the all terrain vehicle ride of which is lots of fun, riding round
a sandy track. There is horse riding, a host of water
sports activities, jungle walks, etc.

111

Should you prefer a more relaxing holiday you could

take a dip in the pool, go for a massage at the Samara Spa, etc. If you suddenly feel the urge to torture your muscles, there is a gym for you to go to to
workout those muscles. They have a something like
a kids club too with scheduled activities.

A Mixture
Holes
& Tees

Antique furnitures.
Just before arriving at the hotel one will pass a golf
course. This here is the Damai Laut Golf & Country
Club, a lovely place for golfers to put their balls into
holes, 18 of them in fact (that didnt come out right).
The par-72 championship course is designed by
Ronald W. Fream, overlooking both the river and
straits. For those who prefer the use of a buggy,
this here is a course for you.
113

I Need More Time

^Walking about the beach in the evening.

I so want to spend more days there but other responsibilities took priority over extending my trip. Anyhow,
I will be back there again as I want to experience more
of the resort and enjoy my time there. Next time I will
be spending more time in the resort experiencing it
and perhaps, I will tell you more.

Spiced Pumpkin Cafe & Bakery

oing the same thing over and over again seems to

be our thing. We usually frequent the same restaurants
over and over again probably because of its familiarity,
convenience, etc. Once in a while we look for something
different. If your once in a while is up, try this place
called Spiced Pumpkin Cafe & Bakery in Shah Alam,
Selangor, Malaysia.

Malaysian & Palestinian Love Story

It has been said that love knows no boundaries or borders and this here is proof. Although Spiced Pumpkin
Cafe & Bakery started with Nur Azizarin and Mas Zuhairin Zubir joining hands and going into business; the
story started much earlier.
Nur Azizarin fell in love and married her late husband,
a chef from Palestine. Nearing the end of his life, Nurs
husband handed over to her his recipes. Today, through
the hands, heart, and mind of Nur and her business partner, Mas Zuhairin; her late husbands legacy lives on in
the delicious dishes served at Spiced Pumpkin Cafe &
Bakery.
117

Maghlubah Rice

One very delicious main course that we had was the

Maghlubah Rice that is cooked in a pot and brought
to the table. The pot is then overturned (like when one
turns over a bucket of sand when building a sandcastle)
and the rice with everything else cooked in it comes out
according to the shape of the pot.
In the mix came tender lamb (mutton), a mixture of nuts,
carrots, potatoes, raisins, etc. This dish is super tasty
and offers a good dash of cholesterol. For those worried
about cholesterol there is the option of chicken instead
of lamb. I enjoyed this dish thoroughly and so did everyone else on the table.

Tres Leches

When it comes to desserts I like mine sweet and I think

I may have found a heavenly one in the form of Tres
Leches, Spanish for three milk a dessert that uses
three types of milk of which if memory serves me well are
evaporated milk, condensed milk, and fresh milk. This
sweet delightful dessert comes with a cake drowned in
sweet milk, topped with a slice of peach, strawberries,
and blueberries.
119

Kunafa

Another lovely dessert for those whose preference of

desserts are one that is lower in sweetness, the Kunafa
would be one to try. It is fried crispy shreds of orange
dough stuffed with a cheesy filling, and showered with
bits of pistachios. For those that like it sweeter, adding
syrup to it gives it the needed sweetness.

Pita Nachos

Now, if youre a big fan of nachos and you think Mexico

makes the best nachos in the world, here comes competition. The pita nachos here are super yummy. They
may be a little saltier than usual but they taste delicious
having been fried with their special herbs and spices
(secret formula). This is a must try.

121

Certainly A Must Visit

^Yes, they do have healthy food too the likes of this salad.

Well, if youre in Selangor or Kuala Lumpur, I highly recommend that you have at least one meal here at the
Spiced Pumpkin Cafe & Bakery. It certainly is worth a
visit. Do not blame me should you over eat. Everyone
who ate there that evening over ate; a testament to the
good tasty food served.

Bali & Spice, Da-Men

Subang Jaya

f youre got a big appetite and you love eating food

flavoured with lots of spices, why not take a trip to Bali...
errr, okay, I am just kidding. You can have lovely, tasty,
Balinese cuisine here in Malaysia and one of these restaurants Bali & Spice by Ole-Ole Bali.

Nice Setup

Looking for a place to eat one day we headed to a shopping mall called Da-Men. We wanted to dine in some
place nice since we were celebrating a birthday and the
ambience of Bali & Spice caught my eye. Although it did
not look like a high-end dining place on Fifth Avenue, it
certainly looked nice.
125

Balinese Cuisine

I ordered Siap Bumbu or Balinese roasted chicken with

lemongrass marinate. The portioning was really good.
More importantly, the meal was delicious. The chicken
on its own tasted a little bland but the chilli paste was really good although tongue melting spicy. The vegetable
side it came with was lovely.

Another set we ordered is the nasi campur of which is

a mixture of Balinese grilled prawns, squid, fish, chicken, and sate lilit (it is like chicken satay skewered with
lemongrass). The food is superb. Every mouth full is accompanied by the bursting of flavours from the spices
used. The chilli paste can be quite a torture as it burns
the tongue but it taste so good one just cannot stop eating it.
127

Decent Prices

^The chilli sauce on the left is really a tongue burner.

Personally I find the prices there to be slightly above average but decent due to the portioning, ambience, and
good service rendered. When I have friends over and
I want to see them having difficulty walking yet happy,
this is where I bring them. Certainly worth every cent.

Location

^Tasty fried chicken dish. I cannot remember its name.

of Selangors main attractions. The aircraft livery was
launched at the beginning of this year in conjunction

were treated to awesome, fun-filled LEGO activities
that were meant to stimulate their imaginations through
play. These kids, who are not allowed to go home during
the holiday seasons, received the ultimate holiday treat,
as they were treated to building and colouring activities, singing and dancing performances and a special

spend the holidays at home.

the kids experienced here today, it is our sincere hope
that the awesome fun and games today brings them closer to their family and their imaginations. They could not
