What is MASHUP CINEMA?

-

It is a mixture of at least two elements coming from two or more different

sources of audiovisual material in order to create original content.
It is a concept that allows for a fun sharing experience with the audience.
Pop culture images, universal film references, media objects, are
remixed as a tribute to the original source material or even to create a
subversive new work of art.

Like what Daft Punk did for electronic music in the 90s,or as it was called
the French Touch movement, it is time now for cinema to take over. The
most viewed French film last year was Hell's Club with 30 million views and
counting. There is a large community of mashupers in France but it does not
end here , they come from all over the world and they are all unique in their
approach to cinema.

OUR MAIN GOALS

There are four kinds of expression that revolutionize cinema nowadays: TV Series, Transmedia, Virtual Reality and
Mashup. From the four it is just Mashup that doesn't have its own festival in France. We would like to
be the ones to give it one.
In fact, there are many people who already are familiar with this practice, they just don't have a name for it or
maybe don't know all that it entails.
The goal of the festival is to make the connection between fun, mainstream mashup videos and the
more art-house, elusive mashup films that are out there. This way the audience will get the full effect of this
phenomenon and realize there is something for everyone.
Our main wish is for a big audience to get to know these artists through screenings, workshops and roundtables.
And why not inspire some new ones !
The Mashup Film Festival is also interested in opening a dialogue that goes beyond the artistic dimension of the
movement. We are going to shed a light on socioeconomic issues such as: education through the visual image,
the democratization of access in culture and artistic creation, conferences around the question of copyright, the
discovery or re-discovery of film heritage by a new generation and more.

Forging a stronger bond between mashup and film heritage

Mashup cinema is a new audiovisual language inspired by the past but at the same time in constant search of new ways
of artistic expression. Thus, the Mashup Film Festival will advocate for the conservation and re-imagining of film
heritage via screenings of the original films in consort with their mashup versions.

the internet and were part of its explosive takeover.

Reach out to the mainstream

Each and everyone of us owns a mouse, or a touch screen and a somewhat unlimited database of images that they
not only watch but can edit, cut, change, reuse... Even if you don't know it by its name, Mashup is everywhere!
Mashupers play around with pop culture imagery that speaks to everyone one way or another. Their work is universal,
unbound by borders and as a result everybody has access to it. And thus we hope to attract a public of so called
uninitiated viewers.

THE Origins of MASHUP

1928: The first film that influenced mashup: Inflation by the dada artist Hans Richter.
60s: Found footage could be considered as a precursor of mashup cinema.
80s: Proto-mashupers appear like Chris Marker with his film Sans Soleil (1983), a documentary using largely
images shot by others and Jean Luc Godard with the series Histoire(s) du Cinema, an 8 part video project which
started in 1988 and was completed in 1998.
1987: The film Apocalypse Pooh by Todd Graham comes out which is considered as the first film of Mashup
cinema.
1993: La Classe Americaine: Le grand detournement by Michel Hazanavicius and Dominique Mezerette
broadcast on Canal+ is the first film of this genre to be seen by a very large audience.
00s: The Mashup phenomenon explodes, as online access, as well as, access to video editing tools becomes
more and more democratized.

They talked about it....

Mashup is everywhere! If the meaning
of the word escapes some of you ,this
practice is universal defying borders. Far
from being anecdotal , this phenomenon
of appropriation or rather reappropriation gives birth to
transformative creations that subscribe
to the Web 2.0 concept of a culture of
exchange and sharing
ARTS-NUMERIQUES. NET
However the term means so much
more than a mixed plate:it remains a
way of approaching things, often a
state of mind. That conveys from time
to time the values behind the
internet.: sharing,exchanging,free
access(..) It is a pillar of the online
community.

What makes up the mashup is its

specific relationship with images: the
way it appropriates them, dismantles
them and reassembles them, breaks
them down in order to create new
stories, instigate new feelings as to show
the underlying logic or to pay tribute to
them or to even completely deconstruct
them.

becomes a work of art.

Mixing, remixing, mashup, this new terms describe a reality as old as creation
itself. But with digital technology ,the possibilities of (re) creation have
multiplied. Make the most of it !
