Qualifications for admission to the GST for students from abroad

If you do not have either of the following: 1. an official certificate of qualification
(Allgemeine Hochschulreife) for matriculation to a German university, or 2. a Bachelors
degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, you will need to apply for a formal
admission permit from the Ministry of Education of the federal state of Hessen. Please
send the following documents to the GST:
1. Notarized copies of all relevant proof of previous education (high school diploma,
SAT, ACT, certificate from college, transcript of record from current studies etc.).
The determination as to whether your educational level is equivalent to the
Allgemeine Hochschulreife will be made on the basis of a comparision with the
database anabin. To see whether you qualify and which certificates you will have to
submit, got to http://anabin.kmk.org (the site is in German only) -> Schulabschlsse
mit Hochschulzugang (diplomas that qualify for matriculation to German universities)
-> suchen (search). In the dropdown menu choose the country in which the school
you graduated from is located. Then choose from a list of diplomas from your country.
Choose your type of diploma to see the courses of study you are qualified for as well as
the conditions under which you may study in Germany.
A less official, but English language version is accessible at
https://www.daad.de/deutschland/nach-deutschland/voraussetzungen/en/6017admission-requirements/.
All certificates, diplomas etc. must be accompanied by a German translation prepared
by a licensed translator in Germany. (A notarized copy of the translation is sufficient;
you can keep the original translation for future use.)
2. A personal data sheet containing your current postal address and detailing your
educational history to date and any professional experience you might have.
3. Proof of citizenscip (e.g. a notarized copy of your passport).
4. A registration card (original or notarized copy; if applicable).
5. For German repatriates: proof of recognition according to 15 BVFG (certified copy).
6. A declaration that you have not previously applied and are not simultaneously
applying for admission at another university in Germany.
Once the GST has received these documents, we will forward your application to the
Hessian Ministry of Education. A fee of 100-160 Euros must be paid directly by the
applicant to the ministry upon demand before the admission permit is issued. The ministry
may request further documents, as needed.
If you have an accredited degree (at least B.A.), you are eligible to study at any
university in Germany without further admission permit. You can find as list of
accredited schools http://anabin.kmk.org -> Hochschulabschlsse(degrees) and
Institutionen (institutions) (the site is in German only). To see whether your school is
recognized as accredited, choose Suchen (search). In the dropdown menu choose the
country in which the school you graduated from is located. You will see a list of accredited
schools and degrees.
