OrganizationsinvolvedinThunderBayharbourcleanupare
recommendingthatBirdorAnimalDeformitiesorReproduction
Problemsberemovedfromthelistoflocalconcerns.
Birdandanimaldeformitieshavenotbeenreportedwithin
ThunderBayharbourhoweverdeformitiesincormorantshave
occurredatnearbylocationsliketheGravelIslands(inBlackBay,
some40km.SEofThunderBayonL.Superior).
EnvironmentandClimateChangeCanadaresearchinvolved
examinationofherringgulleggsforcontaminants.Eggsfrom

MuttonIslandandtheWelcomeIslandsinThunderBaywere
comparedtoeggsfromareferencesiteatGraniteIslandinBlack
Bay.Researchconclusionsareasfollows:
thereisnoevidenceofcontaminantinducedimpairmentof
reproductionforcolonialwaterbirdswithinThunderBay
0%deformityrateofherringgullembryosfromThunder
Bayfollowingartificialincubation
0%deformityrateinherringgullchickswithinThunderBay
inbothstudyyears
Limiteddifferencesincontaminantconcentrationsbetween
ThunderBayandreferencecolonies.
Currentcontaminantconcentrationsarebelowthresholds
establishedforimpairmentofreproductionandprotectionof
avianfisheatingwildlife.ThunderBaycontaminantlevels
weresomeofthelowestacrosstheGreatLakes.

BACKGROUND
ThunderBaysharbourwaslistedasoneofoverforty
environmentalAreasofConcernaroundtheGreatLakesin
1987,undertheCanadaU.S.GreatLakesWaterQuality
Agreement.Urbanization,industrialandmunicipalwastewater
dischargesandhabitatdegradationwereallcontributingfactors.
Contaminatedharboursediment,waterqualityissuesandconcerns
aboutthehealthoffishandwildlifepopulationswerecitedas
problemsrequiringremedialaction.
Thenextmeetingofthepubliccommitteedealswithfishand
wildlifehabitatandtakesplaceat7p.m.onFebruary8thinRm.
ATAC3004atLakeheadUniversity.Allmeetingsarefreeand
opentothepublic.Eveningparkingisalsofreeofcharge.
